Our Story

From 1976 – 2005 Hesston Community Child Care Association operated out of many different locations throughout Hesston including several churches, and Hay and Forage. In the early 2000s a vision for an intergenerational program came through director Judy Friesen and CEO of Schowalter Villa James Krehbiel. In 2005 Hesston Intergenerational Child Development Center moved to our current location on the campus of Bluestem Communities. This opened up interaction between the youth and seniors living at Schowalter Villa. In 2018 the final phase of the intergenerational Program was completed with the opening of two classrooms in the Mullet Place building.

Hesston Community Child Care Association remembers our roots with the Swartzendruber family who created many play structures and equipment needed for the childcare center. Each playground still uses something that was created by a Swartzendruber. In 2019, the playgrounds were named “Druber’s Playground” in dedication to the support and willingness to create something useable from nothing for the center.

Judy Friesen saw Hesston Community Child Care Association through many moves, trials, and successes throughout her time as Director. Judy helped create the love of nature, and the Christ inspired, child centered program that we deeply value.  In 2018 when Judy Friesen retired after 30 years of service, Director Naomi Reyes renamed the classrooms after wildflowers that represent her quality traits and spell out her last name.

Expanding Community Service

The School Age Program has been serving children in the community at Hesston Elementary School since 1992. Working to meet local family needs, SAP provides several care options for school age children including; before/after school care and full/half day care during Hesston School District’s in-service days. During the summer months, care is expanded to an all day program known as the Summer Enrichment Program. The School Age Program and the Summer Enrichment Program both operate out of Hesston Elementary School.

In 2022 Hesston Community Child Care Association partnered with Hesston Community Preschool to begin preparations to provide a morning preschool option aiming to better serve the community. With the cooperation of Hesston School District, USD 460, a space was made available at Hesston Middle School for HCP to operate out of. The Preschool operates during the months of September – May. The fundamental objective of Hesston Community Preschool is to help children thrive in social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual areas of development.

Our mission is to provides a safe, healthy, stimulating, and secure Christian environment that responds to the individual needs and diversity of the children and families who choose to participate in our programs.

Intergenerational Program

Jill Moore is the Intergenerational Coordinator for the HICDC center along with Schowalter Villa. Jill organizes weekly play time in the Villa’s outdoor courtyard for our two oldest classes at HICDC. The classes that spend time in the courtyard have a variety of activities to enrich their time with the residents, who we like to call our Grand-Friends. Some of these activities include large motor skills using balls, hoops, and a variety of other outdoor toys. Children also build listening skills through fine motor activities such as moving to music, use of puppets, flags, and a parachute.

The center has a multi-purpose room that has windows into a hallway of Schowalter Villa that residents are able to watch through. We are able to coordinate play time and activities in this room that all classes are able to participate in. The entire center is also able to participate in big parades and themed events throughout the year.

In the summer months the children have weekly picnics for lunch on the greater Villa campus with residents nearby to observe and interact with the children.

Due to Covid restrictions some of the interactions between children and the Grand-Friends have been limited. We always take the health and safety of everyone into account when planning activities. The Intergenerational Program benefits both the children and residents in many ways. The children build relationships with people of all ages and learn to interact with people that they may not see on a regular basis. The children are also exposed to a variety of people with limitations and learn to process those limitations they see. The residents enjoy seeing the children on walks around campus or the playground and look forward to seeing the children regularly.

Be ashamed, Mr. Bush, cry, Mr. Heston

Culture

Wanted. Michael Moore. White man. Thick. He wears glasses and a cap with painted ducks. Loves people, hates George Bush and Charlton Heston. Shoots great. Teaches tolerance and kindness.

Behind Tuesday and the dull competitive routine of the Moscow Film Festival. The attention of the public should not be burdened either by the struggle of a Finnish cleaning lady for her rights (“Eila”), or by the mental turmoil of a Hungarian emigrant who returned to his homeland to meet an old love and a young daughter (“A Week in Pest and Buda”). Let’s not waste time on trifles – straight to the point, that is, to Michael Moore, the documentary filmmaker and his film Bowling for Columbine. This is the same movie that won the Oscar this spring. At the ceremony, the director did not thank his mother, wife, producer and gentlemen, but cursed the war in Iraq. “Shame on Mr. Bush!” he shouted to the howl of film academics. The scandal he caused is a trifling prank compared to Moore’s film. If a cassette with his recording is sent in America by mail, you can get into the first lines of the list of America’s enemies. Moore poured heartily into his dear homeland, but not for the sake of laughter, but for the promotion of humanism, tolerance, courage, and so on.

The sniper publicist’s main target was the National Small Arms Association, one of the largest and most powerful organizations in America, and its president, Hollywood star actor Charlton Heston. The Second Amendment to the US Constitution allows every citizen to own a gun to protect the home and family. It is one of the foundations of American society. What else to encroach on, if not on the basics.

Moore took on one of the country’s most painful problems. He is investigating the causes of the tragedy that occurred at the school in the town of Columbine at 1999 year. Then two teenagers came to the classroom armed to the teeth and began to shoot classmates and teachers. Two more similar stories pop up in his film – about a six-year-old boy who shot a classmate, and about two youths who blew up a house in Oklahoma City.

Private stories are an occasion to deal with the very problem of violence in America.

They say that the right question is half the solution. But Michael Moore is a meticulous man, and half is not enough for him. He poses questions and tirelessly seeks answers to them. To do this, he is ready to talk to anyone and go anywhere. Moore meets with the Michigan militia, an association of gun enthusiasts equipped like the Marines. A director speaks to suspects in the Oklahoma City bombing. He communicates with schoolchildren from Columbine, goes to the police, to the parents of those killed at 1999 year old children. Interviews Marilyn Manson, who is accused of promoting violence.

He asks again and again: why do so many people get killed in America? Blame rock music, movies, show business in general? Or maybe the reason lies in the bloody history of the country – the destruction of the Indians, slavery, civil war, etc.?

Moore goes to a rocket factory, to an ammunition store, to a shooting range, and finally to a bowling alley.

But what about bowling? – you will be amazed. On the morning before the shooting at the school, the future killers went to the bowling alley. Does this mean that the game provoked violence? Moore asks. Can we then say that Manson’s records are stronger than bowling?

The funny thing is that the damned questions, the seriousness of the topic, the responsibility to society do not make Moore a boring preacher. His film, strictly speaking, cannot be called a documentary. This is not an objective study, but passionate journalism. Bowling for Columbine is chock-full of South Park snippets, comic interludes (why the news only talks about black crimes and doesn’t show the criminal everyday life of crooks from big corporations, let’s fix that) and provocations. The director, for example, for the sake of the reaction he needs, can attach himself to a policeman with the question of why he is fighting black hooligans, and not environmental pollution. Or go to Charlton Heston and demand that he apologize to the people of Columbine. How Moore was not shot during filming is a mystery. Clearly, the spetsnaz platoon could not do without cover.

Of course, Moore does not wish harm to his homeland, but his answers sound not even like a diagnosis, but like a sentence. America lives in a vicious circle of fear and violence. One begets the other. People are afraid, they buy weapons, they kill – and they are afraid again. This is not Canada for you (Moore also swept there), where there is almost no crime and no one locks the doors (the director also checked this). In the US, every day the news talks about atrocities, terrorist attacks, bombs, killer bees, poisoned packages and other horrors. The country is afraid of everything – tobacco companies and Al-Qaeda (an organization banned in Russia). That is why it is arming, that is why it is fighting, that is why its citizens are dying. Panic is a permanent state of society, but this panic sells well and there is no way out of all this.
