Complete guide to starting and growing a home-based childcare center
A home-based childcare center can be a great business opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs who love children. When operating out of your home, the startup costs and risks are low when compared to other businesses, while the opportunity for monetary and emotional rewards are high.
There are many things to consider when deciding to open a home-based childcare center. First and foremost, you will need to have a thorough understanding of early childhood education. You will have children in your care that are in the stage of life where they are doing the most important cognitive development, and so it is your responsibility to provide them with a suitable environment to meet their needs.
Additionally, even though it is in your home, a home daycare is still a business and needs to be thought of as such. From budgeting and taxes to licensing and regulations, you will need to handle the business side of child care as well.

Before you start
Opening a home-based childcare center does not mean simply stating that your home is now a daycare.
via GIPHY
From legal requirements to supplies, there are many items you will first need to sort out for your business to have everything it needs to get started.
Business plan
The very first step towards opening your home daycare is thinking like a business, and a proven way to do so is by creating a business plan. There are many different ways to create a business plan and you can find many templates online to help get you started.
Writing a business plan is a helpful exercise that forces you to plan ahead and anticipate many of the challenges that can often lead to failure when they are overlooked, such as:
- Is there enough demand for a home-based childcare center in your area (e.g. are there more families with young children in your area than existing daycares can accommodate)?
- How much will it cost to operate your business?
- How much will you need to charge per child, and do you have enough space?
- How will you promote your business to get children enrolled?
In general, the more thorough your business plan is, the better prepared you’ll be to open your center. Things will naturally change as you go, but your business plan will give you a solid foundation to build off of.
Business/legal structure
There are many different ways to structure your business from a legal standpoint. There may be different options based on your area, so check your government websites for information they provide on business structures.
For example, you may wish to open as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or incorporation. Each option has different pros and cons for liability, taxes, profits and several other factors.
Additionally, rather than opening as a brand new business, you may wish to become part of a home-based childcare center agency. This would mean more help starting up and getting children enrolled, but less profit overall because the agency will take a commission of sales.
Funding
There are many costs involved with starting a home-based childcare center. Toys, mats, first aid kits, cleaning supplies, binders, markers, paper, food, software, insurance, registering your business, advertising…all the little things begin to add up.
Hopefully you already have enough funding saved up, but chances are you will need to do some outside fundraising.
Aspiring entrepreneurs usually start off asking friends and family to invest in their business. This can be just a simple loan, or you may offer a percentage of your business in exchange for their funding (especially if they are providing a large amount).
You can also check with your bank to see if you can be approved for a business loan. These will often have notable interest rates, however, so make sure that you will be able to repay these loans in a timely manner without it impacting your business too much.
As a child care provider and small business, you may be eligible for local grants or subsidies. Check your local, state/provincial or federal websites to see what is available of new child care businesses. You may be able to get a substantial portion of your funding just by applying to these programs, which can also help you lower your enrollment costs to help benefit parents as well.
Name and branding
A great name can really help your home daycare stand out, which is why it’s important to put effort in the beginning towards creating a great name and brand for your business.
Try to think of a name that is clever and easy to remember, while at the same time tells people what your business is. This is much easier said than done, and coming up with the perfect name can take days or weeks.
Use a notepad or the notes app on your phone to jot down an idea whenever you have one so you don’t forget it. Once you have a lot of names, start picking your favorites. Then share these in conversation to see what others think of your name options.
If you’re feeling completely stuck, give our preschool name generator a try!
Once you have your name, create a logo and choose some brand colors. It may seem like you don’t need this yet, but pretty soon you will be printing things with your logo, sharing it on social media, creating signs, and many other things involving a logo. By doing this work upfront, you will have done the hard work first, and your materials will be consistent because you won’t be changing things as you go.
If you need a bit of help, Coolors can help you choose a color scheme, and there are many online logo designers like Hatchful that can help you choose a font and image for your logo.
Getting started
Once you’ve finished creating your business plan and decided that opening a home-based childcare center is right for you, it’s time to get to work!
Before you open your doors, there are plenty of logistics to think through and set up. This opening a home daycare checklist will help set you on the right track.
Budget
Example of a home-based childcare center budget.
One of the most important things to do as you get started is to figure out how much it will actually cost to run your business. By creating a thorough budget, you will be able to prioritize what are the essential items your home childcare center you will need and which ones are nice-to-haves. This will also help you figure out how many children you will need to enroll and how much their tuition should be.
It can be challenging when creating a budget to be sure that you have thought of every possible thing. If you need a little help, give our free child care center budget template a try.
Insurance
As careful as you may be, accidents can happen — especially in child care. If they do, you will definitely want to have a good insurance plan to ensure that you are covered. Depending on what plan you choose, home-based childcare center insurance can cover essential things like:
- Property
- Crime
- Business income
- Liability
- Equipment breakdown
When creating your budget, insurance may seem like an extra expense to cut down on, but it will be well worth the cost when compared to the alternative of going out of business.
Licensing
Depending on your location, it may be an option to run your home-based childcare center with or without a license. Even still, it is in your best interest to license your home daycare.
Just think of it from the parent’s point of view: Your child is the most precious thing in the world. Would you really be comfortable sending them to a random person’s house, or would you rather send them to a properly licensed child care center?
By licensing your home-based childcare center, parents will know that your program meets all of the standards established by your government. Doing so will also likely make you eligible for different funding and professional development opportunities, which can have a significant impact on the success of your business.
Learning philosophy
A home-based childcare center is not group babysitting. Ages zero through five are the most important years for a child’s cognitive development and a majority of what – and how – they learn will be with you.
There are several learning philosophies to choose from, with the most common being:
- Montessori
- Waldorf
- Reggio Emilia
Additionally, there are typically state of provincial educational frameworks that your government recommends (and in some cases requires), or assessment frameworks you can purchase like the Ounce Scale or Work Sampling System from Pearson.
To start, check with your government websites to see what they recommend or require. If you are becoming licensed, you may have already found the assessment and curriculum you will be following.
Safety
When you’re responsible for a group of children, safety needs to be one of your top priorities.
The first step is to safety-proof your home. Minimize the chances for injuries by removing furniture with sharp corners, covering electrical outlets, securing bookshelves to the wall, and so on.
Next, be prepared for any medical emergencies by getting CPR training if you do not have any already.
It is also a good idea to run regular fire drills and have an action-plan ready should an emergency occur.
Billing and payments
It goes without saying that you will need to collect money in order to sustain your business. When starting your home daycare, you will need to figure out how you will bill customers and collect payments.
Example of tracking invoice statuses.
Sending invoices and tracking payments can be a lot to keep track of while you have all of the other things to manage when running your business, so choose a system that will help make this easier. For example, using HiMama allows you to create and send invoices to parents, track payments, and even collect payments electronically from their credit card or bank account.
For more help getting started, see your complete guide to billing and payments for child care centers.
Hiring
Although staffing requirements are much lower than a child care center not run out of a home, you will likely not be able to do everything on your own. Your licensing or government frameworks may require a certain teacher-to-child ratio. Plus, with all of the other administrative duties, meal prep and cleaning, it can be a lot to manage as one person.
Working at a home-based childcare center can mean wearing many different hats in terms of responsibilities. Figure out what you enjoy most about being a child care provider and focus on those duties, then get help for the other things that need attention.
When looking for employees, focus on candidates who are clearly passionate about child care. It can be demanding and low-paying work, so those who love what they do will be your greatest assets.
Activity planning
Each and every day, you will need to plan out what the children will do to fill up their day. Do some research on different activities to try at your home-based childcare center, and keep track of the ones that the children most enjoy and benefit from.
This is also how you will promote their development through whichever learning philosophy you are following. Chances are that the framework or approach you are using have well-documented activities that they recommend.
Parent communication
Now more than ever, parents expect regular communication with their child care provider. They will want to know what their kids have been up to all day, which is why most childcare centers will provide daily sheets.
It can be difficult to fill out paper daily sheets in the moment, and so educators may have to fill them in later relying on their memory, leading to inaccurate reports. For that reason, you may want to consider digital activity tracking and reporting, so you can easily make observations as they happen and share them in real-time (and with a photo for good measure).
Example of a child report.
You will also want to be able to easily and effectively communicate with parents to send reminders, notes for the next day, or emergencies. A child care app can make this a lot simpler and faster, which will make a difference after you get up and running.
Supplies
The most expensive part of getting your home-based childcare center up and running will likely be all of the supplies you will need, which will generally be either for the classroom or operational supplies. Classroom supplies are things like furniture, books and toys, while operational supplies include cleaning sprays, toilet paper, food, and so on.
To help cut costs, you may be able to find second-hand items like furniture and books, but just make sure they are in good condition and you have properly cleaned them before bringing the kiddos in! You can also implement a policy where parents provide some basic supplies for their children. For example, their child’s favorite toy, some basic stationery or their own diapers and wipes for infants.
Marketing
To get children enrolled at your home daycare, you will need to first put the word out. Marketing can be a challenge for any business that’s starting out, but there are some tried and true strategies that often work for daycare providers. An informational brochure or postcard can be a great way to communicate all that your home-based childcare center has to offer. You can create quick and simple designs using a platform like Canva.
When parents are deciding between the many different providers in your area, having something in front of them to refer back to will allow you to be present during those conversations without actually being there. You can even make a day of it by walking around the neighborhood to drop them off in your neighbors’ mailboxes!
If you want to take your marketing to the next level, you can also advertise online on Google and Facebook. We’ll get into that in more detail in the next section, but you may also want to consider hiring a marketing consultant to help do these things for you while you focus on other tasks.
Growing your business
Once you’ve conquered the biggest challenge of getting up and running, at some point you may wish to take your business to the next level. After all, kids grow up fast, meaning that you’ll need to find new customers sooner than later.
Below are some of the many things you can do to further legitimize your home daycare and attract new customers.
Accreditation
Earning accreditation means that your business meets a high level of standards for different aspects of child care such as education and safety. Being accredited provides you with an easy way to communicate with parents that your business is among the best in your community.
There are several ways to become accredited. For example, many U.S. states offer a Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS), which have their own set of criteria to recognize different levels of excellence. There are also professional membership organizations like NAEYC, which have their own requirements and are widely recognized as authorities in the early education space.
By becoming accredited, parents will know that you are following all of the important guidelines that keep their children safe and are providing developmentally appropriate programming. Accredited child care businesses can also be eligible for funding opportunities not available otherwise.
Online listings
Try doing a Google search for “home daycares in [your city]” and see what websites come up. If there are local websites that list other daycares in your area, try contacting them to see if they will list your business as well. It can be helpful to also provide a description of your business that they can include on their website.
If you see directory websites like Yelp, you can create a free listing for your business. Make sure you are thorough and provide as much information as possible, so your business will look good when compared to the competition. Directory websites will typically have a “freemium” model, where it is free to get started and you can pay to have additional features, which you may want to consider if you begin to see good results from your listing.
Website
Although many home-based childcare centers get enough enrollment through word of mouth, it can never hurt to create a website for your business. If a parent is considering your center, having a website helps legitimize your business and gives them a place to learn more about your services. Plus, you will begin appearing in search results, exposing your business to new potential customers.
Luckily, creating a website is now easier than it has ever been. See our post on how to create a home-based childcare center website to learn how!
Referral program
No matter how much advertising you do, nothing beats a recommendation from a trusted friend or family member for convincing a potential customer to choose your business.
Although you can’t make someone recommend you if they don’t actually want to, a referral program will incentivize them to spread the word about how great you are. Even something as simple as a $25 Starbucks gift card can give parents that extra push to tell a few more friends or post a link to your website on Facebook. Just one additional customer earned through a referral could make the entire program worth it.
Social media is a great way to connect with your existing and potential customers online. Create a Facebook or Instagram page for your business and begin sharing content. These can be updates from your center, sharing links to relevant articles you’ve found online, commenting on others’ posts, sharing videos, and so on.
Just make sure that whatever you do is appropriate and enforces the idea that you are a great child care provider. This is not the time to share your opinion on the latest political scandal. Think more along the lines of an article with tips on how to make bedtime easier.
If your budget allows, you can also create paid social media. Even spending as little as $30 could be enough to reach thousands of parents in your area.
Search engine optimization
When searching for daycares in your area, you want your business to appear in those results. A website is essential to be listed (as outlined above), but there are more ways to be found in search results.
To be listed in Google Maps results, you can create a free Google My Business listing. This allows you to share a description, your hours, location, photos, contact information, and other important things about your business. You will also be able to collect reviews from your customers, which can make a big difference when potential customers are browsing your listing.
Running a home-based childcare center can be an incredibly rewarding experience and provides a valuable service to your community. In this guide, we’ve broken down the major steps involved with getting up and running, but there are always more tips to be shared. Let others know in the comments what has helped you run your child care center!

Your baby was born prematurely | Regional Perinatal Center
Premature babies
If your baby is born too early, the joy of having a baby can be overshadowed by health concerns and thoughts about the possible consequences.
Instead of returning home with the baby, holding him and caressing him, you will have to stay in the department, learn to cope with the fear of touching the baby, realize the need for treatment and various manipulations, get used to the complex equipment that surrounds him.
In this situation, not only your baby needs help, you need it too! The best assistants are your loved ones, their love and care, as well as professional advice and recommendations from doctors and psychologists. This section of articles will help you improve your knowledge of preterm infant care, development and nutrition.
Your help for the baby
Previously, parents were often not allowed into the neonatal unit and, especially, into the intensive care unit because of the fear of infection of the baby, but now the contact of the parent with the child is recognized as desirable and is prohibited only in exceptional cases (for example, if parents have acute infections)
Close communication between you and your baby is very important from the first days of his life. Even very immature premature babies recognize the voices and feel the touch of their parents.
The newborn needs this contact. Studies have shown that it greatly contributes to the faster adaptation of an immature child to new conditions and the stabilization of his condition. The baby’s resistance to therapy increases, he absorbs large amounts of food and quickly begins to suck on his own. Contact with the child is important for parents. Taking part in the care of the baby, they feel their involvement in what is happening and quickly get used to a new role, especially when they see how he reacts to their presence.
By constantly and attentively observing the baby, parents can notice the smallest changes in his condition before others. In addition, communication in the hospital is a good practice that will undoubtedly come in handy after discharge. For parents, early physical contact with the baby is very valuable, because it allows them to feel him, despite the incubator and other obstacles, and show him their love.
Treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit requires parents to have full confidence in all medical staff.
Nursing premature babies in the hospital
Many premature babies cannot breathe, suckle and regulate their body temperature sufficiently after birth. Only in the last weeks of pregnancy is the maturation of the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, brain, which regulates and coordinates the work of all organs and systems.
Fluid loss due to the immaturity of the skin of premature babies and the insufficiency of thermoregulation processes require constant attention. Modern approaches focused on nursing premature babies help to cope with these problems.
Heat regulation incubator
Premature babies are very susceptible to temperature fluctuations. At the same time, clothing can interfere with the monitoring of the baby’s condition and its treatment. That is why an incubator is used to provide the conditions necessary for premature babies. It maintains a certain temperature and humidity, which change as the child grows. When the body weight of a premature infant reaches 1500-1700 g, he can be transferred to a heated bed, and after reaching a weight of 2000, most premature babies can do without this support. There are no strict rules here: when nursing children with low body weight, doctors are guided by the severity of the condition of each premature baby and its degree of maturity.
In incubators, very young premature babies are placed in special “nests” – soft hemispheres in which the baby feels comfortable and assumes a position close to intrauterine. It must be protected from bright lights and loud noises. For this purpose, special screens and coatings are used.
Critical treatments during the first days of life of premature babies with low and very low birth weight:
Use of an incubator or heated bed.
Oxygen supply for respiratory support.
If necessary, artificial ventilation of the lungs or breathing using the CPAP system.
Intravenous administration of various drugs and fluids.
Carrying out parenteral nutrition with solutions of amino acids, glucose and fat emulsions.
Don’t worry: not all premature babies need such extensive treatment!
Mechanical ventilation and CPAP for respiratory support
When it comes to nursing, oxygen supply is of the utmost importance for premature babies. In a child born before the 34-35th week of pregnancy, the ability of the lungs to work independently is not yet sufficiently developed. The use of a constant flow of air with oxygen, which maintains a positive airway pressure (CPAP), leads to an increase in blood oxygen saturation.
This new method made it possible for the majority of even very immature children to do without mechanical ventilation. The need for intubation of children has disappeared: during treatment with CPAP, oxygen is supplied through short tubes – cannulas that are inserted into the nasal passages. CPAP or mechanical ventilation is continued until the lungs can function at full capacity on their own.
In order for the lungs to expand and remain in such a state in the future, a surfactant is needed – a substance that lines the alveoli from the inside and reduces surface tension. Surfactant is produced in sufficient quantities starting from the 34-35th week of pregnancy. Basically, it is by this time that the formation of the lungs is completed. If the baby was born earlier, modern technologies allow the introduction of surfactant into the lungs of premature babies immediately after their birth.
Parenteral nutrition – administering nutrient solutions by vein
Premature babies, especially those born weighing less than 1500 g, are not able to get and absorb enough nutrients, even when fed through a tube. For the rapid growth of the baby, a large amount of nutrition is needed, and the size of the stomach is still very small, and the activity of digestive enzymes is also reduced. Therefore, such children are given parenteral nutrition.
Special nutrients are injected into a vein using infusion pumps that deliver solutions slowly at a predetermined rate. In this case, amino acids necessary for building proteins, fat emulsions and glucose, which are sources of energy, are used. These substances are also used for the synthesis of a number of hormones, enzymes and other biologically active substances. Additionally, minerals and vitamins are introduced.
Gradually, the volume of enteral nutrition increases, and parenteral nutrition decreases until it is completely canceled.
Premature infants with gastrointestinal disease require parenteral nutrition for a longer period of time.
By the time your grown baby is discharged from the hospital, everything should be well prepared at home. And this applies not only to the environment, clothes and means of caring for the child.
All family members must be ready to receive the baby. Of course, the main care will fall on the shoulders of the parents. Although you have already gained some experience in the hospital, it is important to feel the support of others, especially in the early days.
Older children can also help. The discharge of your baby is a great joy that you want to share with all your relatives.
While you are getting used to your new role, it is important that nothing distracts you from communicating with your child. Now all the care and responsibility for the baby lies entirely with you. Everything you need to take care of him should be at hand.
Preparing for discharge from the hospital
Before discharge, you must make sure that:
- Prepared the crib, bath for bathing and a place for changing clothes, preferably a changing table. A crib should be placed in the parents’ bedroom, the child should not be left alone even at night. A stroller is also required. you have baby milk that was recommended by the doctor before discharge (if the child is on mixed or artificial feeding). As a rule, this is a specialized medical product. You need a certain number of small bottles and teats of the appropriate size, as well as a sterilizer. All premature babies will need pacifiers.
- You have fully mastered breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
- If your baby is not suckling all the required amount of milk from the breast and is supplementing from a bottle, you have purchased a breast pump that you have learned to use; you may also need it if you have a lot of breast milk.
- You have asked your doctor how often your child’s weight should be monitored.
- If your baby still needs medication, you have the required amount at home. And you know exactly how and when to give them to your child.
- You know which warning signs to look out for.
- After the baby is discharged, a pediatrician and a neonatologist will look after the baby, to whom you will give the discharge summary from the hospital.
- You know how the hospital from which your child is being discharged will provide follow-up care after discharge.
- You know which specialists and how often should examine your baby (oculist, neuropathologist, etc.).
- All the emergency phone numbers you need are at your fingertips.
When can a child go home
This question is very difficult to answer because all children are different. The stay in the hospital can last from 6 days to 6 months, depending on the degree of prematurity of the child, the severity of his condition, as well as the presence of certain complications.
Of course, all parents look forward to the moment when the baby can be brought home. Long-term nursing of a premature baby is often a difficult test for you. But we must not forget that safety comes first, and the baby can be discharged home only when the doctors are confident in the stability of his condition. It is certainly in your interest as well.
The rate of increase in body weight and length
Weight gain is the main indicator of the growth of the baby and the adequacy of the treatment. The weight of the child, especially in the first days and weeks of life, is influenced by a number of factors: the presence of milk in the stomach (immediately after feeding), the time of bowel movement, the degree of filling of the bladder, the presence of edema. Therefore, if an edematous child does not gain weight for several days, and perhaps even loses it, do not worry. It should be remembered that children grow unevenly and periods of high weight gain alternate with lower ones. It is better to focus not on weight gain per day, but on the dynamics of this indicator over several days or a week.
It is currently accepted that in the interval corresponding to 28-34 weeks of pregnancy, the normal weight gain of the child is 16-20 g/kg per day. Then it is reduced to 15 g/kg.
It is also important to take into account the rate of increase in body length. With malnutrition, at first the child gains less weight (or even loses it), and with a more pronounced deficiency of nutrients, his growth is also disturbed.
The weight must not only increase at a certain rate, but must also correspond to the length of the baby. An important parameter characterizing the development of the baby is an increase in the circumference of the head. The brain most actively increases in size during the first 12–18 months of life. But an excessively rapid increase in head circumference, as well as a slowdown in its increase, indicate neurological disorders.
A premature baby can be discharged from the hospital if:
- he is able to independently maintain the required body temperature;
- does not need breathing support and constant monitoring of the work of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems;
- can suck out the required amount of nutrition on its own;
- does not need round-the-clock monitoring and frequent determination of biochemical or other indicators;
- supportive care can be provided at home;
- he will be under the supervision of a local pediatrician and neonatologist at the place of residence.
The decision to discharge home is made for each patient individually. In addition to the state of health of the baby, the degree of preparedness of parents, their ability to provide high-level care for a premature baby is also taken into account.
Feeding a premature baby after discharge
Breastfeeding is the ideal way to feed premature babies.
However, if the baby was born much prematurely and his birth weight did not exceed 1800-2000 g, his high nutritional requirements cannot be met by breastfeeding. The growth rate will be insufficient. Moreover, over time, the content of many nutrients, including protein, in milk decreases. And it is the main material for building organs, and primarily brain tissue. Therefore, proteins must be supplied to the body of a premature infant in the optimal amount.
In addition, premature babies have a significantly increased need for calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for bone formation.
In order for the baby’s nutrition to be complete even after being discharged from the hospital, special additives – “enrichers” are introduced into breast milk in a certain amount, already less than in the hospital. They make up for the lack of protein in it, as well as some vitamins and minerals. As a result, the child receives them in the optimal amount. The duration of their use will be determined by your doctor. If there is not enough milk or it does not exist at all, children born prematurely should be transferred to artificial feeding. Complementary feeding of premature babies is carried out with special children’s dairy products designed for children with low birth weight. This baby milk is ideally suited to both the ability of immature children to digest and assimilate nutrients, and their needs.
Premature infant milk contains more protein, fat and carbohydrates than term infant milk, resulting in a higher calorie content. In specialized baby milk, the concentration of many minerals is higher, especially iron, zinc, calcium, phosphorus, as well as vitamins, including vitamin D. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the Omega-3 and Omega-6 classes are introduced into such products, which are necessary for proper development of the brain and organ of vision, as well as nucleotides that contribute to the optimal development of immunity. However, when the child reaches a certain weight (2000-2500 g), you should gradually switch to feeding with standard baby milk, but not completely. Specialized baby milk can be present in the diet of a premature baby for several months. This time, as well as the volume of the product, will be determined by the doctor. He will answer all your questions about how to feed your baby.
At present, specialized children’s dairy products have been developed and are being used to feed premature babies after discharge from the hospital. In its composition, it occupies an intermediate position between a specialized product for premature babies and regular baby milk. Your baby will be transferred to such baby milk while still in the hospital. You will continue to give it to your child at home, and the doctor, watching him, will tell you when it will be possible to switch to regular standard baby milk. If the baby was born with a very low body weight or is not gaining weight well, special baby milk can be used for a long time – up to 4 months, 6 or even 9months. The beneficial effect of such children’s dairy products on the growth and development of the child has been proven in scientific studies.
Feeding needs for premature babies
Higher caloric intake because they need to gain weight faster than term babies.
More protein as premature babies grow faster.
More calcium and phosphorus for bone building.
More trace elements and vitamins for growth and development.
A premature baby grows faster than a term baby. Nutrition for such children is calculated taking into account body weight at birth, the age of the baby and its growth rate. As a rule, the calorie content of the daily diet is about 120-130 calories per 1 kg of body weight.
It is very important that your baby continues to gain weight quickly and grow in length after discharge. To do this, feeding premature babies must be carried out using a specialized fortified diet prescribed by a doctor.
how to help them develop?
The birth of a small child is not uncommon today. Often, such babies are born on time or a little earlier, but due to a lack of weight, they can significantly lag behind their peers in development. Pediatricians and neuropathologists closely monitor the child’s condition, because a child’s body weight deficiency is a risk factor for changes in the neurological status, functional disorders of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. But because of their weakness, underweight children do not eat well, and the rate of weight gain in children born with low body weight determines their further physical and psychomotor development and the formation of the immune system.
How much should a newborn gain in weight?
To assess the development of your child and the compliance with the norm of the main indicators (height, weight), you can contact a pediatrician or independently – according to existing tables. In the first months, the child is actively growing, adding up to 25-60 grams per day. Small children with adequate nutrition can increase body weight more intensively than their peers. For the first month of life, children should gain up to 1.3-1.7 kg. After 5-6 months of life, the intensity of weight gain decreases somewhat – in 30 days, the increase can be only 400-700 grams.
The length of the child’s body during the first month increases by 4-7 cm, and after 5-6 months of life, growth is added less intensively – by 2-3 cm. But parents should understand that these figures are approximate. Each child is individual. Its weight and height depend on many factors: heredity, the quality of the mother’s nutrition, the state of health of the newborn, the severity of childbirth.
Why is the child not gaining weight well?
The main cause of underweight in the neonatal period is the baby’s refusal to breastfeed. Small children have poor appetite and spend most of the day sleeping. Often, parents have to wake up the child for a long time, and after a few minutes of sucking on the breast or a bottle of formula, the newborn falls asleep again. Children are especially sleepy, in whom pronounced physiological jaundice was observed in the first days of life.
As a result, after the next weighing, the doctor can tell the mother that the newborn has not gained weight at all or the increase is insignificant. If the situation does not improve for several months, the mother and baby may be hospitalized for a comprehensive examination and tube feeding in a hospital setting.
Sometimes the cause of low weight gain lies in non-compliance with breastfeeding tactics. Pediatricians recommend applying the baby to only one breast during feeding so that it sucks out the “hind” milk, which is of particular energy value and rich in nutrients. Due to their inexperience, mothers offer both breasts to newborns. In this case, the child sucks the upper milk without making any effort and quickly falls asleep, slightly satisfying his hunger.
If the baby has had an infectious disease, been ill for a long time, suffered from a high fever or intestinal upset, then the monthly weight gain may be significantly less than usual. In this case, the timing of the introduction of complementary foods is also shifted, and during the period of illness, in general, many children practically refuse to eat, which is reflected in their weight. Parents should actively communicate with the pediatrician, if necessary, ask him questions of interest and adhere to all recommendations.
How to help a child gain weight and catch up with his peers in his development?
If you are breastfeeding, pay special attention to your diet. Drink as much liquid as possible: low-fat milk, compotes, hypoallergenic juices. Your diet must include boiled or baked meat. Take extra vitamins (as advised by the doctor). Breastfeed your baby immediately after waking up, when he is active, in a good mood and does not want to sleep.
But sometimes women’s milk is produced in insufficient quantities or the baby does not have enough strength to suck it out. In this case, it is necessary to start supplementing with special infant formula as soon as possible. For children prone to allergic reactions, special hypoallergenic products are intended, which can be bought at a pharmacy, having previously discussed the mixture option with a pediatric nutritionist or pediatrician. Small babies are not adapted to intensive sucking, so the nipple on the bottle must be soft and pliable so that the child can fill up without problems.
In addition, to increase the rate of weight gain and, accordingly, for the proper growth and development of the child, it is recommended to give courses of preparations containing L-carnitine (levorcarnitine), an essential vitamin-like substance that has anabolic properties and has proven itself to normalize body weight in case of its deficiency. In addition, by increasing the secretory and enzymatic activity of gastric and intestinal juices, appetite and digestion improve. One of these drugs is Elkar, containing an aqueous solution of L-carnitine. Elkar is included in the “National program for optimizing the feeding of children in the first year of life” as a means of correcting malnutrition of the II degree.
In children, in contrast to the adult body, where levocarnitine is among the substances produced, the synthesis of this compound covers only 1% of the required amount. Of course, the required amount of L-carnitine is found in breast milk, but if natural feeding is impaired or impossible, the drug must be added to the diet.
In underweight children, psychomotor development is often retarded, which can subsequently manifest itself in the form of speech defects, instability of the nervous system. Elcar improves the energy supply of brain activity, which will help to avoid or reduce the degree of development of functional failure in various areas of the child’s neuropsychic response (motor, emotional-motivational, vegetative, cognitive spheres).
Another very important point: levocarnitine improves immunity, which is vital for small children, since almost all of them are predisposed to the development of infectious diseases.
The rate of weight gain is influenced by many external and internal factors. The task of parents is to help the crumbs get stronger as soon as possible. Walk more with your child in the fresh air so that his body receives the necessary amount of oxygen. And don’t forget to visit your pediatrician. Small children need professional medical supervision and the attention of loved ones.
Top 15 Handbooks for Young Parents – News – IQ Research and Education Portal – National Research University Higher School of Economics
RESEARCH AUTHORS:
Zhanna Chernova , Professor of the Department of Sociology, National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.
Larisa Shpakovskaya , Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.
Books about early childhood assign different roles to parents. In some manuals, young mothers and fathers are just “students” who must follow the recommendations of “teachers” – experts. In other books, the “monopoly” on knowledge about the child is divided equally between parents and childhood specialists. The third type of books absolutizes parents and does not favor experts. At the same time, all books contain useful advice and serve as a good guide for young families.
Zhanna Chernova and Larisa Shpakovskaya studied which books about early childhood (up to three years*) are the most popular and how parental competence is understood in them. The results of the study are published in the article “Professionalization of Parenthood: Between Expert and Common Knowledge” (Journal of Social Policy Research, No. 4, 2016).
Parents become professionals
In today’s society, parenthood is perceived almost like a profession. As in any business, it has its own special set of competencies, the process of learning them, and even control by specialists. This “professionalization” is influenced both by the social institutions associated with childhood and by the families themselves.
- Parents are persistently “educated” by all concerned: the state, pediatricians, psychologists, teachers, mass media and manufacturers of children’s goods. Requirements for families are growing, new standards of parental care are being formed.
The old “formula” of maternal care – “clean, fed, shod, dressed” – has long been supplemented with new components. Among them are the “early intellectual development” of the child, his “psycho-emotional comfort” and “creative development”. All this requires a lot of effort and time from parents, but it pays off with interest.
- Young families themselves also want to know more about the right way to raise their children (see Parents actively educate themselves, Parenting becomes a profession). This is evidenced by their activity in Internet forums on childhood, the fashion for a variety of “schools for moms and dads”, joint activities with children (kids clubs, for example) and a high demand for children’s goods / services.
Childhood forums and blogs are especially revealing: they reflect everything that parents have learned on the topic. Articles, oral advice from experts, videos, and books about childhood are discussed.
The authors of the study studied websites and forums for parents (littleone.ru, eva.ru, chado.spb.ru, babyforum.ru and many others) and determined which books are most often mentioned and recommended by their registered members. Other sources of data on the most read literature were conversations with parents (urban educated middle class, 100 interviews in 2010-2014) and a survey of St. Petersburg bookstore salespeople.
Neophyte Landmarks
In the course of their research, Zhanna Chernova and Larisa Shpakovskaya identified fifteen books on childhood that were bought most often**. Some have already become classics for new parents. So, modern moms and dads still read the bestseller of the famous American pediatrician Benjamin Spock “The Child and Care for Him” (first published in the USA in 1946). The advice of the famous Soviet educators Boris and Lena Nikitin is also popular (the first books were published in the 1960s; the works have been republished more than once and translated into at least ten languages).
The most read books on childhood tell about babies from “A” to “Z”. Here and physical development (with specific indicators of growth, weight, skills of the child by a certain age), and the treatment of diseases, and educational games for children, and recipes for children’s cuisine, and the psychological problems of parents and kids.
However, the authors of books see the parental role differently. And they differentiate the competencies of families and experts in different ways. In some books, parental experience is absolutized. Close contact with the child, intuition and parental love will help to find the right solution, they say. Other experts, on the contrary, insist on the need to “obey” specialists. Still others offer a compromise: the parent studies the opinion of experts, but makes the decision himself, taking into account the specific situation.
Experience plus intuition
- Ludmila Petranovskaya. “Secret support. Attachment in a child’s life.
- Irina Mlodik. “A book for imperfect parents, or Life on a free topic.”
- Boris and Lena Nikitin. “We and our children.”
- William and Martha Sears. “Your baby from birth to two years.”
Main parenting competencies: love for the baby and developing your own parenting style that is optimal for the family. The goal of professionalization: a happy childhood and parenthood.
Pros: benefits teach neophyte parents to believe in themselves, develop intuition.
Controversial point: “dictation” of parental experience.
Presentation style: confidential story, dialogue with the reader on an equal footing.
Distinguishing marks: close emotional and physical contact with the baby – for example, breastfeeding, wearing a baby in a sling, sleeping together.
The authors of such books are opponents of dogmas in regard to the upbringing and care of the child. The argument is simple: babies differ in their psychophysiological characteristics, and the situations in families are different. The home environment, the involvement of the child in household chores and maternal love, according to Boris and Lena Nikitin, are more important than expert advice.
The books are addressed primarily to young mothers. Behind them is recognized “biological”, natural knowledge about children. “Surprisingly, by nature itself, a young mother has already been given enough knowledge, skills, wisdom, love to take care of her baby,” writes Irina Mlodik. Close contact with the child increases this knowledge, develops parental intuition: the mother feels her baby better.
Expert opinion
- Lyubov Pavlova. “A Practical Encyclopedia of Early Development: Years to Three”.
- Mikhail Fedotov. Encyclopedia of early child development. First year of life.
- Georgy Bolotovsky, Alexander Tsaregorodtsev. “Three Major Years: A Book for Parents”.
- Ludmila Sokolova, Nadezhda Andreeva. “This amazing baby.”
- Valentina Alexandrova. “Encyclopedia of the Young Mother”.
- Sergei Zaitsev. “A book for young mothers”.
Key parental competencies: competent care of the child, training in proper care. The purpose of professionalization: the health and comfort of children.
Pros: Parents receive the most important knowledge about caring for a baby. Information is given on indicators of child development, and the range of recommendations is quite wide: from hygiene to dietetics.
Disputable moment: absolutization of medical knowledge, parental experience is taken out of brackets.
Presentation style: monologue guide. The authors of the books “offer an objective picture of the development of the child, thereby claiming the absolute truth of speaking about parenthood and childhood,” Chernova and Shpakovskaya explain.
Special signs: assessment of all changes occurring with the child from the point of view of health/illness.
Young parents, according to the authors of these books, are incompetent in matters of care. They need professional advice. After all, already from the first days of life, the child needs to create the right conditions, establish a competent (in terms of hygiene and health) life.
That is why the information in such books is extremely specific. So, the guide of pediatricians Georgy Bolotovsky and Alexander Tsaregorodtsev begins with the words: “To care for a newborn, you need cotton swabs and cotton swabs, gauze wipes, baby cream, powder, baby oil, two pipettes …”. It is necessary to constantly monitor the physical condition of the child and, in case of any doubt, consult a doctor, the authors of the books are convinced.
Common sense based on knowledge
- Mikhail and Nadezhda Telepov. “Education of parents. Questions for reflection.
- Evgeny Komarovsky. The health of the child and the common sense of his relatives.
- Benjamin Spock. “Child and Care”.
- Elena Pervushina. Handbook for a young mother. Educational activities for kids.
- Ekaterina Murashova. “Your obscure child. Psychological prescriptions for parents.
Core parenting competencies: love for the child and the ability to think critically – adapt expert prescriptions to the person and situation. The purpose of professionalization: the health of the child, psychological comfort for the whole family.
Pros: balanced position. Parents are given a guide – medical information. At the same time, it is recognized that mothers and fathers must make independent decisions, taking into account all specific circumstances.
Controversial point: the need for a critical attitude of parents to very different information – both to ordinary stereotypes (which is quite understandable), and to the advice of experienced doctors.
Presentation style: instructions and imperatives alternate with confidence.
Special features: abundance of cases from practice.
Bookmakers give parents the freedom to decide. “The author does not aim to strictly regulate the actions of mom or dad,” writes Dr. Komarovsky. After all, sometimes expert advice is hard to put into practice. Then the common sense of parents helps, their ability to navigate the situation. This approach strengthens the position of parents when dealing with professionals, Zhanna Chernova and Larisa Shpakovskaya are convinced. “It allows mothers and fathers to be more autonomous in their choice of parenting model” and helps shape individual parenting style, the researchers conclude.

Features of adaptation and development of premature babies. Doctor Plus Medical Center
The first year of a child’s life is characterized by the most intensive growth and rapid development. But during this period, the body is extremely vulnerable, the defenses are weak and imperfect. This is especially true for children who were born prematurely and are considered premature.
Premature are children born at gestational age from 28 to 37 completed weeks, weighing from 1000 – 2500 grams, height 35 – 45 cm.
The reasons for their premature birth are varied: too young age and, accordingly, the mother’s body; hemolytic disease of the fetus, which develops as a result of Rhesus conflict; pathological (not normal) course of pregnancy; previous abortions, illness, physical and mental trauma; harmful working conditions, the use of nicotine and alcohol.
What a premature baby looks like. Anatomical and physiological signs.
There are 4 degrees of prematurity, depending on the weight of the child:
Grade 1: 2500 -2001 grams Grade 3: 1500 – 1001 grams
Grade 2: 2000 – 1500 grams Grade 4: 1000 grams or less.
Since body weight may or may not correspond to the gestational age at the time of birth, premature babies are divided into 2 groups also according to these signs
• children whose physical development corresponds to the gestational age at the time of birth;
In premature babies, the subcutaneous fat layer is not sufficiently developed, i.e. they suffer more from overheating and hypothermia. The skin is thin, dry, wrinkled, abundantly covered with fluff. Insufficient maturity of blood vessels is manifested by the Harlequin symptom. If you put the baby on its side, the skin acquires a contrasting pink color.
The bones of the skull are malleable, not only a large, but also a small fontanel is open.
The auricles are soft – the cartilage in them has not yet formed, they are pressed to the head, and not separated from it, as in full-term ones.
The nails do not reach the edge of the phalanges of the fingers, the umbilical cord is located below the middle of the body, and not in the center.
The underdevelopment of the genital organs is indicative: in girls, the labia minora are not covered by the large ones. In boys, the testicles are not descended into the scrotum.
The child sucks badly, swallows with difficulty. The cry is weak, breathing is not rhythmic. Physiological jaundice often lasts up to 3-4 weeks.
The umbilical cord falls off much later, and the umbilical wound heals more slowly.
It has its own characteristics and physiological weight loss. It is restored only by 2-3 weeks of life, and the timing of weight recovery is directly dependent on the maturity of the child, i.e. not only the date of his birth, but also the degree of adaptation of the baby to environmental conditions.
In premature babies, the nerve centers that regulate the rhythm of breathing are not fully formed. The formation of lung tissue has not been completed, in particular, a substance that prevents the “falling off” of the lungs – Surfactant. Therefore, their respiratory rate is not constant. With anxiety, it reaches 60-80 in 1 minute, at rest and during sleep it becomes less frequent, respiratory arrests may even be observed. The expansion of the lungs due to an insufficient amount of Surfactant is slowed down, and respiratory failure may occur.
The heart rate also depends on the condition of the child and environmental conditions. With an increase in the ambient temperature and the child’s anxiety, the heart rate increases to 200 beats per minute.
In premature newborns, asphyxia and cerebral hemorrhage occur more often. They are more likely to suffer from acute respiratory diseases, intestinal infections, which is due to weak immunity and insufficient development of many adaptive reactions.
These babies are more likely than full-term babies to develop anemia (anemia).
Especially during the period when intensive growth and weight gain begins (2-3 months). With proper nutrition of the child and the mother, if she breastfeeds, these phenomena quickly pass. In the case when anemia is of a protracted nature, it is necessary to prescribe iron preparations.
The further development of the child is determined not only by the degree of prematurity, but also in many respects, by the state of his health for a given period of time.
If the child is practically healthy, from the 2nd month of life, he gains weight and height in the same way as full-term ones. By the end of the 1st year, the weight increases by 5-10 times compared to the weight at birth.
The average height is 70-77 cm.
The nervous system of premature babies is also more immature. The development of various skills, their intellectual development lags behind by 1-2 months.
These children sit down later, start walking later, they may have anomalies in the structure of the foot, curvature of the legs, and spine. If children are born very premature and often get sick, their development slows down by about a year. In the future, it levels off, approximately to preschool age.
If you have suffered intrauterine malnutrition, i.e. the nutrition of the fetus was disturbed for some reason – diseases of the mother, anomalies in the development of the child itself, anomalies in the development of the umbilical cord and placenta, then its central nervous system can recover for a long time (therefore, the observation of a neurologist is very important).
There may be lability of the nervous system (mood changes easily, often gives in to emotions, conflicts with other people are not uncommon), night terrors, enuresis (urinary incontinence), lack of appetite, a tendency to nausea.
However, in general, premature babies grow up as quite normal people.
Care of a premature baby after discharge from the maternity hospital.
For a child born prematurely, dispensary observation is established at the place of residence up to 7 years.
Periodic consultations of specialists are obligatory, first of all – a neurologist, as well as a surgeon, an otolaryngologist, an ophthalmologist
From the age of 2-4 weeks, rickets is prevented (ultraviolet
irradiation – quartzization, the addition of vitamin D to food, massage, hardening).
The most adequate type of nutrition for a premature baby is breastfeeding. But given that the baby can suck out an insufficient amount of breast milk, you can supplement it with expressed milk or adapted mixtures.
From 4 months – vegetable purees, 5 months. – porridge, 6 months. – give meat soufflé.
Correction of protein and fat deficiency is carried out by adding the required amount of kefir and cottage cheese, starting with 5 ml, gradually increasing the dosage.
The room in which a premature baby lives should be bright, dry and thoroughly ventilated. The optimum room temperature is 20-22 *. S. Walks are very important. Sufficient exposure to fresh air prevents the development of pathological conditions.
In winter, walks start from the age of 2 months at an air temperature not lower than -8, -10*C. The duration of the walk is from 15 minutes to 2 hours. In summer, a child can spend all the intervals between feedings during the day in the fresh air. On windy, rainy and very hot days (more than 30*C), it is better for children to sleep indoors with windows open or on the veranda.
Daily warm baths are helpful. When bathing premature babies, the water temperature should be at least 37*C.
Vaccination of premature babies is carried out strictly according to an individual schedule, it depends on the state of health, physical and neuropsychic development of the child.
When organizing care for a child born prematurely, one should take into account the functional characteristics of the body.
In conclusion, let us say: as long-term observations show, despite all the peculiarities, with good care, due attention of parents and doctors, premature babies develop successfully and after a year they catch up with their peers.
who is entitled, the amount of payments, conditions for receiving and how to apply for it

Author profile
On March 8, the president announced a new allowance for children aged 8 to 16 inclusive. Now for this age there is a payment only to single parents, but from May it will also be able to be received by complete families with low income.
There is no resolution with the rules for assigning this state support yet, but the Ministry of Labor has already explained who is entitled to it and in what amount. In short, the conditions are the same as for payments for children from 3 to 7 years old, only the PFR will pay, and not social protection. This means that the regions will not be able to change the conditions.
Everything that is known about the new payment and its execution is in this analysis.
What is this payment
This is a new benefit that will be awarded to from April 1, 2022. There was no such payment before – at the federal level, after the 8th anniversary of the child, only single parents received benefits: when the second died, went missing, is not indicated in the document, or if there is a court decision on alimony.

Now and complete families will be able to receive allowances for children 8 years and older, taking into account the need. It is planned that it will be assigned to 5 million children.
Who is entitled to the payment
To be eligible for the payment, three conditions must be met simultaneously:
- Average per capita family income is below the subsistence level per capita.
- The family’s property is included in the established list.
- Adult family members have a proven income or a good reason for not having it.
You will not need a court order for alimony for this payment.

What income is taken into account for the purpose of payment
If the rules are the same as for payments from 3 to 7 years, the list of income will be as follows: , payment for services – before taxes.
- Pensions and benefits.
- Scholarships and sabbatical allowances.
- Alimony.
- Payment to successors under pension insurance.
- Dividends and interest on operations with securities and derivative financial instruments – net of expenses.
- Interest on bank deposits.
- Business income less expenses and earmarked grants.
- Income from the sale and rental of property.
- Income from author’s order contracts.
- Income from self-employment – excluding expenses.
- Income from sources abroad.
Not included in income:
- Monthly payments from 3 to 7 years for past periods for the same child.
- One-time financial assistance from local budgets.
- Payments for the care of children with disabilities and disabled people from childhood of the first group.
- Allowances and alimony for children from 18 or 23 years old according to the conditions of the regions.
- Payments under a social contract.
- Target funds for full payment for housing or transport within the framework of social support.
- Capital to pay for housing or rehabilitation facilities.
- Personal income tax returned with the help of deductions through the employer or according to the declaration.
- Burial allowance.
- Compensation for damage to life, health and property.
How to justify zero income
If there was no confirmed income at all during the accounting period, you need to collect at least 10 months of good reasons from this list:
- Unemployed status – a period of up to 6 months is taken into account.
- Child care up to 3 years.
- Full-time study without a scholarship.
- Caring for a child with a disability, a disabled child of the first group, a disabled person of the first group or an elderly person from 80 years old.
- Continuous treatment for more than 3 months without the ability to work.
- Military service and 3 months after demobilization.
- Imprisonment, detention and 3 months after release.
- Single parent status of a minor child.
- The status of a large family – is taken into account for one of the parents.
Both parents can have good reasons and can be combined in different combinations. If there are neither reasons from this list, nor income, the benefit will be denied.
What kind of property can you have to receive benefits
You can focus on the list for payments during pregnancy and for children from 3 to 7 years old and from 8 to 17 years old. It is the same for the three types of state support – it will most likely be the same for the new allowance.
A family may collectively have the following property:
- One apartment, room or shares. The total area for all family members is within the norm for the region, but not more than 24 m² per person.
- One house or shares. The total area for all family members is within the norm for the region, but not more than 40 m² per person.
- One dacha (garden house).
- One non-residential premises – except for outbuildings on personal plots and common property in apartment buildings.
- One garage or parking place. Two – for large families, families with people with disabilities or when providing transport for social support.
- Land plots up to 0.25 ha in the city and up to 1 ha in the countryside. Only plots in the region of application for payment are taken into account.
- One machine. Two – for large families, families with people with disabilities or when providing transport for social support. If there is a machine with a capacity of more than 250 hp. With. and not older than 5 years there will be a denial of payment, even if there is no other transport. An exception is for large families with four or more children.
- One motorcycle. Two – for large families, families with people with disabilities or when providing transport for social support.
- One recreational craft not older than 5 years.
- Income from interest on deposits and bank accounts up to 12,654 R — income for the tax period is taken into account, divided by 12 and multiplied by the number of months that fall in the billing period.
The following property is not taken into account:
- Shares in residential premises not more than 1/3 of the total area for all family members.
- Real estate and transport provided as part of social support for large families or fully paid for with targeted payments. Payment by mother capital is not suitable here.
- Premises unsuitable for habitation.
- Rooms and shares of family members with a dangerous illness that makes it impossible to live together.
- Housing under arrest.
- Transport under arrest and wanted.
- Far Eastern or Arctic hectare.
How much money you can get
Unlike the allowance for single parents, the new payment will be 50, 75 or 100% of the subsistence minimum for children in the region – the same as for payment from 3 to 7 years:
- 50% – basic size, approximately 6000 R;
- 75% – an increased amount, approximately 9000 R – if, when the base amount was set, the average per capita income still did not reach the subsistence level per capita;
- 100% – the maximum amount, approximately 12,000 R – if, when an increased amount was assigned, the average per capita income still did not reach the subsistence level per capita.
Most likely, the allowance for single parents for children from 8 to 17 years old will be canceled, because it will not make sense and will turn out to be less profitable than the new one. The same mother who is assigned child support will be able to receive 100% of the subsistence minimum, and not 50%, as it is now.
To receive benefits, you need to have a Mir card or an account without a card. Appointment – for 12 months, then it must be renewed.
How to apply
In March and April, you cannot apply for a new payment either in person or online. It will be possible to apply for benefits from May 1, 2022. Provided that on April 1, the child is 8 years old, but not yet 17 years old.
The payment will be scheduled starting from April 1, 2022, that is, if you apply in May, the first amount will come immediately in two months.
The application can be submitted in person to the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation or through public services. As soon as the form appears, we will tell you right away. You don’t need to do anything until May 1 – just wait.
Now the following payments can be made on public services:
- when registering up to 12 weeks of pregnancy;
- for children aged 3 to 7;
- for children from 8 to 17 years old to single parents.
What other payments can be received for children
There are many benefits and payments, there are even more conditions for receiving them – it is easy to get confused in all this. We made a test for parents that will help you figure it out. Answer a few questions and find out what types of government support you can count on.

cultivation, planting, care in the open field
Many summer residents do not particularly bother with caring for strawberries – they grow and grow. It seems that this culture is quite unpretentious. In fact, she is very capricious. It is important to choose the right place for her, properly plant and constantly care for her.
Strawberry cultivation
Now there are many varieties of strawberries that are resistant to heat and drought, but their resistance also has limits. In general, this culture does not like when the soil dries out very much. But even more she does not tolerate when the site is waterlogged. Therefore, it is important to choose the optimal place for it. The ideal option is a flat or elevated surface, or small slopes of the south, south-west or east direction (1) in a sheltered part of the site where cold north winds will not penetrate. This is especially important in winter – many varieties of strawberries are not very hardy.
Strawberries prefer loose and fertile soils, such as loam or sandy loam.
Strawberry planting
– Strawberries are now most often sold with a closed root system, in containers. In this form, it can be planted from early May to late September. In this case, there are no special problems with planting – it is only important that the seedling on the site be at the same level as in the pot – no higher, no lower, – says agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova.
But if strawberries have bare roots, that is, with an open root system (all kinds of scientific institutions sell this in the old fashioned way), it can be planted only in late summer – early autumn: from about August 15 to September 15 (2). However, if the autumn is planned to be warm and protracted, the planting period can be extended until September 15 – 20.
It is important to plant seedlings with an open root system as soon as possible, ideally on the same day they are bought.
Classic strawberry planting pattern:
- between rows – 70 (3) – 80 cm (4);
- in a row – 15 – 20 cm (3, 4).
Outdoor strawberry care
Strawberries require care throughout the season, from late April to September. But often summer residents neglect this – they pay attention to it only until the moment of harvesting. And then the plants are forgotten. And this leads to the fact that next year the harvest is greatly reduced.
“Strawberries lay flower buds of the future crop in the middle of summer, in July, and at this time they need abundant watering,” reminds Svetlana Mikhailova.
Strawberries should be watered once a week in summer. If the beds are mulched, then less often – 1 time in 2 weeks. It is best to mulch plantings with peat, humus or compost with a layer of 3-5 cm (5).
3 feedings are enough for strawberries during the season:
- in the last days of April – 10 g of urea (1 tablespoon) per 10 liters of water, the norm is 1 bucket per 1 sq. m;
- as soon as the first flowers bloom – 15 g of nitrophoska (1 tablespoon) per 10 liters of water, the norm is 1 bucket per 1 sq. m;
- in early August – 30 g of double superphosphate (2 tablespoons) and 50 g of ash (1/2 cup) per 10 liters of water, the norm is 1 bucket per 1 sq. m.
Harvesting strawberries
Since strawberries ripen unevenly, they should be harvested every 3 to 4 days.
– If they are intended for transportation and storage, it is important not to overexpose them on the bush, because it is problematic to bring overripe fruits to the house – they will wrinkle and flow. But if you are going to make jam from strawberries, then it is better to wait until they are fully ripe or even a little overripe – in this case they will be sweeter, advises agronomist Svetlana Mikhailova.
When harvesting, strawberries should not be taken by the berry, but by the stalk and carefully pinched off. It is important that the green sepals remain – without them, the fruits deteriorate instantly.
Photo: pixabay.com
Strawberries should be placed in small containers – in deep containers, the berries will shift under the weight of their own weight. And in no case should they be sorted out – sort immediately at harvest, removing all damaged and rotten fruits. Rotten berries, by the way, must be buried in the soil – they cannot be left on the site, otherwise the disease will spread to other fruits.
It is better to harvest strawberries in the morning, when the dew subsides – at this time the berries are the most dense and dry.
Rules for storing strawberries
Strawberries are very tender and do not last long – a week at most. The best place for them is the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. The ideal temperature is 0 – 2 °C.
Strawberries can be stored in shallow plastic containers or in plastic bags (they should be opened slightly to allow the berries to breathe). But even better – in wooden containers or birch bark boxes. But in metal dishes, especially zinc, it is undesirable, in which the berries deteriorate much faster.
For winter use strawberries can be frozen whole or cut into pieces. It depends on how you are going to use them in the future. It is best to freeze in portioned plastic containers.
Popular questions and answers
We talked about growing strawberries with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova – we asked her the most popular questions of summer residents.
After which crops is it better to plant strawberries?
Potatoes, early cabbages, beans and lettuce plants are good precursors for strawberries.
Can strawberries grow in the shade?
Strawberry is a photophilous plant. It can grow in the shade, but its yield will be very small, if at all. In addition, in the shade, she is more likely to get sick, because the plants will be weakened.
Do I need to cover strawberries for the winter?
Strawberries winter well under snow, but in regions with little snowy winters they need shelter. The first step is to mulch the soil on the plantation – with peat, humus or compost with a layer of 5 – 7 cm. And on top of the plants it is useful to throw straw or dry leaves with a layer of 5 cm, or potato tops – it will hold the snow.
