According to a new international study, people who have recovered from COVID-19 and are vaccinated against the virus have the best and longest future protection against infection compared to people who who have only been vaccinated or only previously infected.

“These results highlight the importance of vaccination even for people who have already had SARS-CoV-2 infection, and may also help in planning and policy for future revaccination campaigns,” says the researcher and lead author. Niklas Bobrovitz MD student at the University of Toronto Temerty School of Medicine.

Study looked at the impact of COVID-19 infection or vaccination versus a combination of infection and vaccination (known as hybrid immunity) against future COVID-19 infectionhospitalization and severe illness. The researchers also looked at how long protection lasts after the last infection or vaccination.

Findings show that people with hybrid immunity, which includes a full primary dose regimen that varies by manufacturer, are well protected from hospitalization or severe illness for at least nine months, with less but still significant protection from reinfection .

The team found that prior infection and hybrid immunity provided more reliable and long-lasting protection against the Omicron variant than vaccination. Although protection against infection quickly disappeared after exposure or vaccination (60% reduction in chance of infection after six months), protection against hospitalization or severe illness remained high (9% reduction in chance of hospitalization or serious illness).7% after 12 months).

To reach their conclusions, the team conducted a systematic review of 11 studies that looked at people who were previously infected, as well as 15 studies that included people with hybrid immunity.

The most comprehensive hybrid immunity study to date, part of SeroTracker, a group that tracks population immunity around the world using serological test results that show antibodies to COVID-19in human blood as a result of vaccination or infection. The platform was created by Canadian graduate students and professional students and launched at the start of the pandemic.

Bobrowitz first became involved with SeroTracker at the invitation of his classmate Tinting Yang , one of the co-authors of the platform, who at the time was a sophomore M.D. and an M.Sc. Lana. nine0003

Having recently completed his PhD in clinical epidemiology at the University of Oxford, Bobrowitz wanted to use his research skills to help protect the population from the effects of COVID-19.

SeroTracker attracted the attention of the Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization (WHO), who used the platform to develop infection models. The project paved the way for Bobrovitz to work with researchers from around the world, including Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO Chief Technical Adviser on COVID-19, and members of the Canadian COVID-19 Task Force.

The team also included university students in the US and Canada, including Brianna Cheng and Christian Cao , both freshmen in the MD Temerty Medicine program, and Xiaomeng Ma , a graduate student at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Although the results of the study show that hybrid immunity provides more protection than vaccination, Bobrovitz emphasizes the importance of preventing infection. nine0003

“Despite how much scientists and doctors have learned about COVID-19, it is still very difficult to predict how the infection will affect different people,” says Bobrowitz. “Intentional infection can lead to death, the need for mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit, or a host of serious chronic health consequences. It’s not worth the risk.”

Bobrovitz says that, in addition to lessons for dealing with COVID-19 in the future, the results of the study may also have implications for outbreaks of other infectious diseases.
