The most anticipated technologies of 2016

Inspector Gadget

Nikolai Udintsev

January 14, 2016 16:54

In early January, CES (Consumer Electronics Show) was held in Las Vegas, the main technical exhibition of the year, where they show new futa ristic devices. “Afisha” talks about the 12 most important innovations that set the trends of the high-tech market for the year ahead.

Four categories stood out in particular at CES 2016. Firstly, devices for fitness and personal care: an infrared thermometer that measures the temperature by touching the temple, noise-canceling earplugs, a food composition scanner, a sticker for measuring ultraviolet radiation, and a burnt fat counter that works like a breathalyzer.

Second, smart home. In addition to the ridiculous 21.5-inch Samsung refrigerator, there was a camera that remembers everyone who came to your house, an air purifier that monitors the atmosphere in the room, a shower that reminds you that you have used too much water, and a home robot projector.

Much has been said about personal transport. It was offered to ride on an electric longboard, a scooter, a moped, a Volkswagen hippie bus, a racing supercar (more on that below) and a Segway that transforms into an assistant robot.

The last one is the strangest. These are things in which they try to revive old formats with a new meaning. Kodak reinvented the Super 8 camera with Yves Béart design, analog and digital capture. Technics has updated the SL-1200 line of turntables, which solves the problem with rotation speed, Sony has made a turntable to record WAV files from records. And Polaroid is a cute square camera.

Nikon 360 camera and other GoPro competitors

This year, YouTube and Facebook started supporting 360-degree videos, but almost no one can upload them: there are few special cameras, they are either expensive or they don’t shoot well. Nikon showed the first “spherical” action camera KeyMission 360 (it is shockproof and moisture resistant) and promised its line in the future.

Nikon was the first among the big companies, but not the only one. At CES, there was a helmet-mounted Allie Go, a $900 Vuze with eight lenses, and Theta S that can broadcast live. Two days after the presentation of the Japanese, GoPro announced their “spherical” camera, which already have almost no competitors in the action camera market.

360-degree videos are the road to virtual reality, which, by the way, will also be a lot of noise this year (Oculus Rift will go on sale in March). VR headsets will appear more frequently in social media feeds, and 360-degree cameras in stores. Nothing is yet known about KeyMission 360, except that it shoots in 4K and will be released before the end of the year.

The first small wireless in-ear headphones

The main sensation of the exhibition is the normally working wireless in-ear headphones. Several models were presented at once, but journalists noted four.

Completed Dash, which the German company Bragi makes with $ 3.4 million in crowdfunding. You can do more with them than with any other headphones: answer calls with a nod of your head, communicate normally and hear what is happening around you without removing them from your ears (headphones pass some sounds without noise cancellation), turn up the volume on the touchpad and monitor your health eat. Dash are the only ones that work not on Bluetooth, but on Near Field Magnetic Induction technology, which transmits sound to two headphones at once, and not from one to the other.

The rest are not so complicated: Onkyo W800BTs with noise cancellation, a call button, a 12-hour battery (good class time), headphones and a Helix “fashion accessory” stored in a wristband, and ugly Altec Lansing Freedoms that can be found by “ringing” them from a smartphone.

The news of the new wireless earphones was released alongside reports of the iPhone 7, which is rumored to lack a 3.5mm jack. If the information is confirmed, then the owners of the new iPhones will either have to use headphones with a Lightning port or buy wireless ones.

The future of displays: flexible, transparent and double-sided

Three prototypes most likely to influence the displays of the future. At past CES, similar ones were already shown (flexible and transparent – in 2013, two-sided – in 2015), and now they have been finalized to the point that you want to use them.

Panasonic’s prototype does not look like a display, but like an interior element. At the booth, it was built into furniture: if you submit an image, then this is a TV, and if you turn it off, then “tinted” glass, behind which you can see what is on the shelves (although Panasonic is unhappy with transparency). It is not difficult to imagine how in the future you get up in the morning and turn on the news on the closet door.

LG has one display that bends so that it can be tucked into a pocket like a regular newspaper (only with color video), and the other displays a picture from two sides. In fact, these are two thin displays with different images. It is unlikely to be needed at home, but it will definitely become a beautiful sign at the airport.

Personal helicopter that does not need to be controlled

The Ehang 184 hybrid drone, helicopter and taxi can be flown, but it cannot be controlled: the device operates on autopilot and is controlled from a remote control center (they want to create such ones around the world). The drone-copter, as Wired calls it, can work as a single-seat taxi and deliver a passenger to any place where the device has time to fly in 23 minutes (the battery is enough). A person just needs to indicate the place of arrival in Google Maps.

Ehang 184 has a lot of questions: how to organize its flights in the city? How will a passenger be rescued in an accident? Will he be able to see antennas or wires on the trajectory? Will it be able to compensate for the change in thrust as the temperature rises? The drone copter was successfully tested in China, but could not be shown in action at CES – the law prohibits it.

External battery for smartphone charging without socket

Standard situation: to charge a smartphone with an external battery, you must first charge the battery; when its charge runs out, the battery is useless until the next outlet. The Swedish company myFC’s Jaq charger works differently – it doesn’t need an outlet. It consists of two parts: a salt water cartridge and a receiver with a hydrogen fuel cell. The cartridge is inserted into the receiver, a chemical reaction begins and electricity is released. One cartridge is enough to charge the iPhone 6S (1800 mAh allocated). After charging, the cartridge can be thrown away – salt water has turned into fresh water, and there will be no reaction with it. myFC plans to give away receivers for free and sell cartridges as a subscription for $5 per month.

Aircraft flying at 80 km/h

Most drones in the consumer market are four-rotor quadcopters. Parrot, the company that makes small Bebop drones, has developed a prototype Disco wing drone with a flight speed of up to 80 km/h. For comparison, the Phantom 3 quadcopter can only accelerate to 18 km/h. Flying a small plane that flies at the speed of a car is more difficult than a conventional drone, which is why Disco has been equipped with a partial autopilot. The drone needs to be thrown, in the air its gyroscope, accelerometer, propellers will turn on, it will gain a height of 50 meters by itself and will fly in a circle until a person takes the control panel. During the flight, the autopilot will limit the commands that will lead to a fall, and will take over the entire landing. It does not have a landing gear, so it will land “on its belly”.

The first laptop you can play with your eyes

MSI’s laptop (called the GT72 Dominator Pro Tobii) incorporates the Tobii eye tracking sensor. When a player looks at an enemy, the camera or scope switches to him, that is, the sensor replaces the mouse or the right stick. You still need a controller to attack the enemy. But Tobii has already done some of the work. So far, gaze control has been added to Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Tom Clancy’s The Division, DayZ, and Elite: Dangerous. The Mashable journalist admitted that in GTA V it looks natural, and destruction with a glance makes you feel like Superman. If this seems doubtful to you, then imagine how useful the sensor will be in virtual reality.

Glove and suit to control robots

Every child’s dream. First, there is a glove with sensors and a Ziro platform for controlling prefabricated robots. First you need to assemble your robot (parts of the kit cost $149-199), then assign gestures in the application (for example, turn over or clench your palm into a fist) and control it remotely. Secondly, there is a funny harness and glove with infrared sensors for home laser tag (or Q-Zar) SuperSuit. Both projects still look like raw prototypes, they are not going to be released this year.

1000-horsepower electric supercar

Fantastic concept of a powerful electric supercar by the Californian company Faraday Future, in which the Chinese LeTV is actively investing. Theoretically, the 1000-horsepower FFZERO1 monitors the condition of the pilot, accelerates to 320 km/h, and to 100 km/h in 3 seconds. In fact, Faraday Future, which has been developing an electric car for the past year and a half, has no real prototypes. FFZERO1 is unlikely to ever be released in this form. Although the very concept of a racing car on an electric motor looks promising.

Fingerprint pistol safety lock

Identilock closes access to the trigger and is removed only after the owner touches the scanner with a finger. After authorization, the lock falls in a second. They wrote about the biometric lock back in mid-2014, but three days before the presentation, US President Barack Obama instructed ministries to develop systems that, firstly, would protect against an accidental shot, and secondly, would not allow outsiders to use weapons. Identilock fits the bill but is expensive ($319).

First Smartphone with Google’s Spatial Scanner

In early 2014, Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) team began working on a smartphone that could generate 3D real-life objects and maps of indoor environments (the project was codenamed Tango). Two years later, it was announced that Lenovo would release the first phablet with such a scanner this summer. With Project Tango, you can play mixed reality games, use fantastic apps to buy furniture or plan your apartments. Google probably needs this to develop a service with indoor maps. If the company collects enough data, then we will search for the store of the desired brand in a large shopping center in Google Maps.

18-karat gold fitness tracker and other smart jewelry

A separate big topic of the past CES is attempts to cross gadgets with jewelry. So 94-year-old Iris Apfel developed a line of very expensive WiseWear fitness trackers made of 18 carat gold or palladium. They do not have a display, and the set of functions does not differ from cheap counterparts. This is an accessory for wealthy and mostly elderly people who are worried about their health. If you click on it in a certain way, then the location and a message that something happened to the owner of the bracelet will be sent to the previously specified contact list. WiseWear is more expensive than Apple Watch ($395). Other smart pieces include the Misfit Ray tracker in rose gold, the Huawei watch with Swarovski crystals, and the Samsung Gear S2 in platinum or 18k rose gold.
