Waxhaws is located in the historic area called the Waxhaws and is named after the local Native American tribe that lived there before the colonial settlement. The region’s original inhabitants were a group of Native Americans known alternately as the Wysacky or Waxhaws. The first European to make contact with the group was the Spanish conquistador Juan Pardo. In 1711 the Waxhaw helped the colonists of North Carolina in their war against the Tuscarora, a decision that displeased the Tuscarora Iroquois allies in New York [9] who subsequently began raiding the Waxhaw tribe. These raids continued until 1715, when Waxhaw joined the Yamasee in the fighting against the South Carolina colony. The participation of the tribes in the Yamasee War led to their destruction at the hands of the allies of South Carolina Catawba and the liberation of their lands for European settlement. The area was first settled by European Americans in the mid-eighteenth century. Most of the settlers were of German and Scotch-Irish origin. The settlers became subsistence farmers and were known for their independence. Andrew Jackson, Seventh President of the United States, was born nearby in 1767. There is some controversy as to which of the Carolinas was his birthplace due to the proximity of the border. However, there are historical markers around Waxhaw, North Carolina that describe Andrew Jackson’s early association with the area; it is also referenced in the Wax Museum. [10] Andrew Jackson State Park is minutes from downtown Waxhaw, where there is a memorial and other information about Andrew Jackson.
The arrival of the railroad in 1888 opened up access to Atlanta’s markets and helped the city to prosper. Railroad tracks were laid through the city center to show the importance of the railroad system to society. The railroad remains in the center of the city and is now bordered by a green grassy strip separating rows of shops on each side.
Since the end of the 19th century, the community began to develop. cotton factory factories for the production of textiles. The railroad helped expand access for its products. Cotton production was important to the region in the 1940s. Post-war changes in the economy, with the movement of the textile industry to other areas and outside the country, required society to adapt to new conditions.
Waxhaw today
Waxhaw has been transformed into an old and sophisticated restaurant. Its Small Town Main Street committee is working on an integrated approach to the development and marketing of the historic downtown. Waxhaw now has dozens of specialty shops and restaurants. The city has a variety of restaurants ranging from family owned and popular to fine bistros. The Waxhaw Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes commercial establishments as well as architecturally significant houses near the city centre. Also listed is the Pleasant Grove Camp Meeting Point. [11]
Residents and city officials are working on additional improvement plans. In the city center there is a city park and a skate park for young people. Next to the skate park there is a playground and a walking area connected to the city center. New housing was built along NC 75 to the east and west of the city, and NC 16 (Providence Road) to the north.
Walkshaw is adjacent to the 1,050-acre (4.2 km) Cane Creek Park. 2 ) a park with scenic spots and places for recreation. The facility, located on Harkey Road south of Waxhaw, was a joint venture between Union County, Union County Preserve and the Soil Conservation Service from the USDA.
Waxhaw is currently experiencing significant suburban development and has grown by 6.4% in the last year alone. [12]
Waxhaw town center is built around a railroad track with parking. Guests can walk across the historic bridge and cross the train tracks. There is also an observation deck. It is also within walking distance of a skate park and playground. [13]
Government
Waxhaw has a Board of Commissioners which consists of five members. All five members are elected for 4-year terms in non-partisan elections held in odd-numbered years. Three seats are increased one year later, and then two years later, the other 2 seats are up for election at the same time as mayor. There are no districts, and the winners get the seats.

The racial makeup of the city was 78.1% White, 11.00% African American, 2.1% from two or more races, 2.0% Asian, and 0.04% Native American. The Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.4% of the population.
There were 3,242 households out of which 41.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.0% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% had no family. The average household size is 3.04, and the average family size is 3.41.
In the city, the age range of the population was 34.6% to 18 years old, 3.1% from 20 to 24 years old, 32.3% from 25 to 44 years old, 21.2% from 45 to 64 years old and 7% in age 65 and over. . The mean age was 34.5 years. For every 100 women, there were 93.6 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 88.8 men.

- Although the town is small, Waxaw offers annual events that attract visitors such as the Fourth of July Parade, Christmas Parade and Fall Festival.
- Waxhaw is close to the JAARS Center, a partner organization of the Wycliffe Bible Translators which offers bi-monthly flights on JAARS day.
