.. What is Detroit?
Detroit (Detroit) – a city in the north of the USA ( see United States of America) , in the state of Michigan, on the border with Canada ( see Canada) ; port on the Detroit River at the mouth of the Great Lakes. The population is 871.7 thousand people, with the cities of Ann Arbor and Windsor (Canada) and common suburbs – about 6 million people (2006). This is a major junction of railways and roads, there is a road bridge to the Canadian city of Windsor, an international airport. Detroit is the world’s largest center of the automotive industry, ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, metalworking, and chemical industries are developed here.
Detroit was founded in 1701 by a French merchant, Antoine de La Mothe-Cadillac, who built Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroitin here. Later, the British began to call it Detroit. In 1760, during the Seven Years’ War, the city came under the control of Great Britain. In 1763, the Ottawa Indian allies of France, under the leadership of Chief Pontiac, attempted to recapture the fort, but were unsuccessful. In 1796, according to the Jay Treaty, Detroit came under the control of the American authorities. In 1805, it became the administrative center of the Michigan Territory, created that same year. During the War of 1812 it was captured by the British, but the Americans returned it in 1813. In 1815, Detroit received city status. In 1818, the regular steamship service Buffalo-Detroit began. At this time, the city became the center of the flour-grinding industry. Detroit became the county seat of the state of Michigan in 1837 and remained so until 1847, when the state government moved to Lansing. After the Civil War, Detroit went from being an agricultural trading center to an industrial giant. At 19In 13, Henry Ford opened the first assembly line for the production of cars here, and Detroit became the automobile capital of the world. The city grew significantly during the First World War due to military orders, the influx of immigrants and settlers from the south of the country.
As in many American cities, there are no old buildings, but there are interesting architectural monuments of the 20th century. Among them is the building of the Public Library, built in 1921-1923. architect K. Gilbert; Institute of Arts, established in 1922-1927 architects P. Kretom; the Cobo Hall meeting and exhibition building, as well as the 73-story Renaissance Center skyscraper, built in 1977. The sculpture “Soul of Detroit” (“Spirit of Detroit”) was created in 1958. The composition represents a 4 m high kneeling bronze man holding a golden ball in one hand and a golden figurine in the other. This image has become a symbol of the city.
Detroit is home to Wayne University (1868), Mercy University of Detroit (1877), Cranbrook Academy of Art. At the Detroit Institute of Art, you can see the works of artists Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh. The Detroit Cultural Center includes many museums, a science center, and a library. The Henry Ford Museum is located in Dearborn. An interesting museum is the life of the first settlers of Greenfield Village.
