Byron George – Moscow Society of Greeks
Byron was born in Hall Street in London on January 22, 1788. When George was 10 years old, his great-uncle died, and the boy inherited the title of Lord and the Byron family estate – Newstead Abbey.
Newstead Abbey, destroyed during Tudor secularization – Byron family property
In 1799 he entered Dr. Gleny’s school. During these two years he studied very little, but he read the entire rich library of the doctor. nine0102
After graduating from the University of Cambridge, in June 1809 Byron set off on a journey. He visited Portugal, Spain, Albania, Greece, Turkey and Asia Minor, where he swam across the Dardanelles, which he was very proud of later.
Byron in 1804
that she should cry out to heaven and testify against you?” “The swarthy race from the banks of the Ganges will shake your empire of tyrants to the ground” .
Two days after this performance, the first two songs of Childe Harold’s appeared. The poem was a fabulous success, and 14,000 copies of it were sold in one day, which immediately put the author among the first literary celebrities. Why “Childe Harold” was such a success, Byron himself did not know and said only: “One morning I woke up and saw myself famous.”
“Song of the Greek rebels” , written in 1810 and first published in the first edition of the poem Childe Harold (1812):
O Greece, arise!
The radiance of ancient glory
Calls the wrestlers to fight,
A majestic feat.
To arms! To victories!
Heroes know no fear.
Let us follow
The blood of tyrants flows.
Throw off with contempt, Greeks,
Turkish yoke,
With the blood of the enemy forever
Wash off the slave brand!
May the valiant shadows
Heroes and leaders
See the
revival of Hellas of former days.
Childe Harold’s journey captivated not only England, but all of Europe. The poet touched upon the general struggle of that time, speaks with sympathy of the Spanish peasants, of the heroism of women, and his ardent cry for freedom resounded far, despite the seeming cynical tone of the poem. At this difficult moment of general tension, he also recalled the lost greatness of Greece .
In October 1812, Byron proposed to Miss Anna Isabella Milbank, daughter of Ralph Milbank, a wealthy baronet, granddaughter and heiress of Lord Wentworth. Because of his wife’s hobbies in mathematics, Byron called her “the princess of parallelograms” and “mathematical Medea”. In December 1815, Byron had a daughter named Ada.
Augusta Ada King (née Byron), Countess of Lovelace, better known as Ada Lovelace, was an English mathematician. She is best known for creating a description of a computer, the design of which was developed by Charles Babbage. Compiled the world’s first program (for this machine). Considered the first programmer in history. The Ada programming language is named after her. nine0102
After the birth of her daughter, a quick divorce followed. Later Byron moved to live in Switzerland, then in Italy.
Lord Byron during the war in Greece. Painting by T. Phillips
In 1821 a Greek uprising broke out. Byron, after preliminary negotiations with the committee of the Philhellenes, formed in England to help Greece, decided to go there and with passionate impatience began to prepare for his departure. At his own expense, he bought an English brig, supplies, weapons and equipped five hundred soldiers, with whom he sailed for Greece on July 14, 1823. Nothing was ready there, and the leaders of the movement did not get along much with each other. Meanwhile, the costs grew, and Byron ordered the sale of all his property in England, and gave the money to the right cause of the insurgency. Of great importance in the struggle for the freedom of Greece was Byron’s talent in uniting the uncoordinated groups of Greek rebels. nine0102
House in Messolongion where Byron lived.
In Messolongion, Byron fell ill with a fever, continuing to devote all his strength to the struggle for the freedom of the country. The poet finally fell ill, falling under a terrible rain during a walk. The last words of the poet were fragmentary phrases: “My sister! my child! .. poor Greece! .. I gave her time, wealth, health! .. now I give her my life! .
April 19, 1824, at the age of 37, George Gordon Byron died. nine0102
The news of the death of the great poet deeply saddened the entire civilized world; but stronger and deeper than all was, of course, the sorrow of the people to whom he devoted his last days and among whom he died fighting for their liberation.
In the morning, the day after Byron’s death, 37 shots were fired from the guns of the main battery of Messolongion, according to the number of years that the great poet lived. All commercial and industrial establishments were closed for three days; all public amusements were strictly forbidden; in all churches they fervently prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased, and for 21 days the whole city was in deep mourning. All over Greece was heard only: “Lord Byron is dead!”, “The great man is gone!”
The Greek cities were arguing about which of them should have the honor of keeping the remains of the great poet. Athens offered a temple to Theseus. The inhabitants of Messolongion asked to be left at least the heart of their deceased benefactor…
According to some historical sources, Byron’s heart was buried in Messolongion. The city has a mausoleum containing Byron’s heart and a statue of Byron erected in 1881. nine0102
The poet’s friends decided to take his remains to England, although during his lifetime he always expressed a desire not to be buried in his homeland.
On June 29, the ship Florida, carrying the coffin with Byron’s embalmed body, arrived in London. For three days the body of the poet was exhibited to the public, after which it was solemnly taken out of London. Numerous aristocratic carriages with friends, admirers of the late poet, accompanied the sad procession to the city outpost. The funeral took place on Friday 16 July in a small church in the village of Gaknel, located near the city of Nottingham. Byron’s coffin was placed next to his mother’s in the family vault. In the altar of the church, a plaque of white marble was then placed with the following inscription:
“In the vault below this place, where many of his ancestors are buried, and also his mother, lie the remains of George Gordon Noel Byron, Lord Byron of Rochdale, in the County of Lancaster, author of Childe Harold’s Wanderings.” He was born in London, January 22, 1788, and died at Missolonghi, in Western Greece, April 19, 1824, engaged in a noble endeavor to restore that country to its former liberty and glory. “This plaque was placed in his memory by his sister, Augusta Maria Lee.
