Winchester code. How the US Special Squad Destroyed Syrian Civilians | In the world | Politics

Andrey Sidorchik

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

3714

Mikhail Voskresensky / RIA Novosti

In the course of anti-terrorist actions in Syria, the US military allowed the death of civilians, deliberately neglecting the protocols designed to prevent incidents of this kind.

In violation of instructions

According to The New York Times, citing informed sources, we are talking about the actions of the Talon Anvil special unit, which operated until 2019.

About 20 people who were part of the detachment coordinated strikes against militants of the Islamic State terrorist organization (banned on the territory of the Russian Federation). In total, on their tip, about 112 thousand bombs and missiles were used, which were supposed to hit convoys and terrorist detachments, as well as their command posts.

But, according to sources, the soldiers of the US Special Forces Delta, who were part of the Talon Anvil unit, ignored the decision-making protocols, as a result of which civilians, including women and children, died from the strikes.

The scandalous topic first surfaced about a month ago, when journalists from The New York Times learned that in 2019, during the hunt for militant leaders, Talon Anvil launched a misguided blow that killed dozens of women and children. After the release of these data, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered an official investigation into the incident.

Workers were shot, boats were sunk

As it became clear now, this story was no exception to the rule – the special squad committed “reckless actions” throughout the entire period of its existence.

Former adviser to the Pentagon and the State Department Larry Lewis stated that the “collateral” losses of civilians in Syria were dozens of times higher than those in Afghanistan. According to Lewis, in order to avoid a scandal, the Pentagon classified all information about this.

Today, the US military is willing to share details of the activities of the Talon Anvil unit, but only on condition of anonymity.

In particular, in 2016, on a tip from the special forces, three men were killed in an olive grove near Manbij by a rocket. The blow was delivered despite the fact that the Syrians did not have weapons, and they were holding canvas bags in their hands.

On March 9, 2017, at the suggestion of Talon Anvil, boats with civilians crossing them were destroyed on the Euphrates River. About 30 people were killed in the attack.

In the same 2017, the Predator attack drone also attacked the farming town of Al-Karama on a tip from the special forces. Operator Talon Anvil typed a message into the chat window used to communicate with intelligence analysts: “All civilians have left this area. The survivor is an enemy fighter. Find lots of targets for us because we want Winchester.”

The command “Winchester” meant the transition to the mode of missile and bomb attack. Meanwhile, the bearing of the phone of the alleged terrorist did not give an exact localization, but the commandos insisted that the house they demanded to be destroyed was the enemy’s training base.

The impact killed about 20 people, including six children, and injured about 30 others.

Defensive strikes in the rear

According to experts, the number of strikes against civilians on the tip of Talon Anvil has been constantly growing. “It undermined their humanity,” ex-Pentagon adviser Larry Lewis said of the actions of the special forces.

At the same time, the American special forces were aware that they were acting with gross violations. According to a Times source, operators have begun moving drone cameras away from targets before launching bombs or missiles. Initially, it seemed that the matter was in some external factors, but then it became clear that this was done in order not to leave evidence against oneself.

Attacks are divided into offensive and defensive. It was much easier to get permission from the higher command for defensive ones, so even those strikes that were inflicted deep in the rear of the militants – at a distance of up to a hundred miles were included in this category.

Children instead of terrorists: how the US closed the campaign in Afghanistan

In August 2021, the US military hastily withdrew its forces from Afghanistan. The departure, more like a flight, was accompanied by casualties among the Afghans, who tried by hook or by crook to leave the country. After the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport, the US military decided to intensify operations in order to prevent a recurrence of attacks on the air harbor.

On 29 August, a US drone attacked a car in the center of Kabul.

According to representatives of the American command, a car with explosives intended for a new terrorist attack was destroyed. However, the Afghan side insisted that the family, which had nothing to do with the militants, was under attack.

During the first days in Washington they insisted that the stocks of explosives and one of the leaders of the terrorist cell had been destroyed.

It wasn’t until three weeks later that Pentagon officials admitted that there had been a mistake. 10 civilians, including seven children, became accidental victims. The US military said it was considering making compensation payments to the families of those killed.

American pilots refused to carry out missions

Now it turns out that Afghanistan was not the worst option compared to Syria. In Syria, American troops are in general without any legitimate reason, which, apparently, makes them think that everything is possible here.

Talon Anvil’s promiscuity in the choice of targets was no secret among the American security forces. Both CIA officials and Air Force officers reported this to the top. Moreover, according to American journalists, US Air Force pilots repeatedly refused to carry out strikes on the Talon Anvil tip, as they indicated densely populated areas where the probability of civilian deaths approached 100 percent.

Senior US military officials are extremely reluctant to comment on this information. Those who did agree to speak out cite limited oversight and that military conditions per se are the main cause of civilian deaths, not the US military’s disregard for civilian lives.

Part of the job?

“We saw so many civilian deaths that over time we began to consider them as part of our work,” one of the Air Force officers admitted to the publication on condition of anonymity.

The 2019 strike on the Talon Anvil tip, from which The New York Times began to study the activities of the American special forces, killed 80 people. The total number of victims of such attacks is currently unknown.

Based on the practice of the past, it is unlikely that as a result of the investigation, the perpetrators will go to trial. Unlike peaceful Syrians and Afghans, Washington expertly takes its security forces out of the blow.

How to choose an external hard drive?

An external hard drive is a mega flash drive that connects to a computer via a standard USB port. Such a “flash drive” is quite large, but the amount of its memory easily reconciles with this drawback. A capacious and productive removable hard drive will allow you to offload the main hard drive, speeding up its work, and at the same time help you securely save your personal files – even the largest of them.

Transcend, ADATA and Toshiba remain the top external hard drive manufacturers.
However, you should not rely only on this factor without going into details of the characteristics and your preferences. In this article, we will help you figure out which hard drive is right for you.

Device type

Before buying, you should decide what type of drive you need. External hard drives are divided into two types:

SDD is a solid state drive that has no moving parts. It is a set of chips placed on a single board. The mass storage device works like a USB flash drive, but many times faster.

HDD (aka “hard drive”) is a hard drive that consists of several magnetized “pancakes” and a special head. It is located micrometers from the blanks and reads information above their surface. The operation of a hard drive is similar to playing a vinyl record.

Experienced users and manufacturers recommend purchasing an SSD, because this type of external drive has a lot of advantages:

Fast loading. Solid state drives can offer very high processing speeds. In particular, thanks to the SSD, the operating system will be able to start with, as it seemed before, incredible lightning speed. Any SSD drive can run your OS twice as fast as a similar hard drive.

Fast reading and writing. The SSD is capable of handling about 500 megabytes per second, compared to an average SSD with 150 megabytes on a hard drive. SSDs can be useful to you if you are a graphic designer using software that requires a huge amount of PC resources, or a hardcore gamer who needs high performance for games.

Low power consumption. These storage devices are designed in such a way that they consume significantly less energy for their operation than possible analogues among HDDs. Your laptop battery will last longer, which will save you a lot on your electricity bill.

Low noise level. Spinning hard drives are known to make enough noise to annoy the user if they need to focus on something important. SSDs can make life a lot easier if you want the device to make as little noise as possible during operation.

Shape and size. SSD, due to its compact size, can be installed both in place of the old HDD, and make it an external drive.

However, SSDs also have disadvantages over HDDs.

Price. While SSD prices have been falling for years, their HDD predecessors remain a much cheaper and more affordable option. One of the reasons for the biting prices may be that the popularity of the former is currently much lower than that of classic SSDs. Perhaps in a few years everything will change in favor of SSDs.

Loss of data due to power failure. Although SSDs are a more reliable storage of information, a sudden power outage can affect the stored data. If the power is suddenly interrupted, you risk losing all data.

Limited service life. The most serious disadvantage of an SSD is that it loses its write capacity over time. This is because it is not possible to change the number of bits on a disk. In order to fix this, it is necessary to delete and rewrite a large block of data, since when information is erased in an SSD cell, a residual charge is stored in it. This charge increases the resistance of the cell and, eventually, no current can flow through it, rendering the cell useless.

Memory capacity

When choosing the type of device, it is very important to understand how much memory is best for you.

For example:

Form factor

The form factor of an external hard drive indicates its physical size. Portable external hard drives are divided into three main sizes:

Form factor 3.5ʹʹ

Hard drives with a 3.5-inch mechanism inside (3.5ʹʹ form factor) cannot be called portable. They not only have quite impressive dimensions, but also require a connection to the network, or the presence of a power supply. But, by purchasing such a copy, you can aim for additional memory up to 16 TB.

Form factor 2.5ʹʹ

2.5ʹʹ form factor hard drives can handle as much current as is drawn from the computer via USB (or other port). Their weight is several times less than that of 3.5ʹʹ discs, and their dimensions allow you to carry them in your pocket. Today’s 2.5ʹʹ form factor devices can reach 5TB of capacity.

Form factor 1.8ʹʹ

The most compact external hard drives today belong to the 1.8ʹʹ form factor. They use SSD memory. So the capacity does not exceed 1 TB.

Connection interface

External hard drives are connected to devices via the USB connector. Leaving behind the USB 2.0 connector, the advanced USB 3.0 and 3.1 connectors are in the lead. Along with the improvement of the characteristics of the connector, the speed and quality of the drives have increased.

Protection

In order for your disc to serve you for a long time, like any other equipment, it must be protected from external negative influences: from shock, dust and moisture. With due care, your external drive will serve you a long and faithful service.

Case material

When it comes to case material, users prefer more durable metal models as it dissipates heat better and is therefore the preferred choice. Plastic external drives may be lighter and feel nicer, but they don’t handle heat as well, so there is a risk of causing the drive to overheat and malfunction.

Data encryption

One of the important points when choosing an external hard drive is the possibility of data encryption. If you want to protect files and personal data, then such a disk will become a reliable guardian of your information.

External hard drive is a very useful purchase. In this article, we have analyzed the main points for choosing a disk. Now it’s up to you – go to the external SDD and HDD section and choose yours!

The house that the ghosts built: the secrets of the cursed mansion of the widow of Winchester

The house of the widow of Winchester today

Today, the mansion, located on Winchester Boulevard in San Jose, attracts thousands of tourists every year with its mysterious stories about the ghosts and spirits that inhabit his. However, the widow of Winchester had completely different goals when she began its construction. The absence of a general development plan, the monthly change of workers and 38 years of construction – the history of the cursed house is overgrown with legends and myths, and the secrets of its owner still excite fans of chilling stories.

Future mistress of the accursed house Sarah Lockwood Purdy was born in 1839 in New Haven, Connecticut, to a poor family of Leonard Purdy and Sarah Burns. Little is known about the girl’s childhood, and the first mention of her appeared only in 1862, when Sarah married the heir to the arms company, William Wirt Winchester.

Sarah Winchester

William Winchester, the son of the same Oliver Fisher Winchester who founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and invented the rifle named after him, had the fame of an enviable groom and was very popular with women. However, Sarah Purdy captured his heart, and a few months after they met, the couple got married.

At first, the life of Sarah and William resembled a fairy tale – mutual feeling, prosperity, position in society. In addition, after four years of marriage, the lovers had a daughter, whom it was decided to name Annie. The newly-made parents were absolutely happy, but the idyll was not destined to last long.

Annie died a month after she was born. According to the experts, the cause of the girl’s death was alimentary dystrophy, a disease that is often observed in children under one year old and is caused by a lack of nutrients entering the body.

The tragic death of her daughter was a real blow to the family – Sarah was in a state of extreme stress for several months, and William did not know how to help his desperate wife. Even years after Annie’s death, the couple still hesitated to have children.

But this death was not the last tragedy in the Purdy-Winchester family. In 1880, William’s father Oliver died, and a year later Winchester Jr. himself died. In both cases, the cause of death was the infectious disease tuberculosis, which was common in those years.

A series of losses greatly affected the fortune of Sarah Winchester, who in an instant became the heiress of a multi-million dollar fortune and at the same time was left completely alone. The widow could not find a place for herself and began to turn to the services of psychics and magicians, hoping to understand the causes of death of her loved ones.

House of the Winchester Widow

After several useless sessions with people with paranormal abilities, Sarah met with a medium from Boston named Alan Koons, who revealed the details of the Winchester family’s past.

According to Koons, a terrible curse lay on the Winchester family. All the deaths that happened in the family are the cruel revenge of those killed by a rifle created by Oliver Fisher Winchester. The frightened woman was horrified by what she heard, but the medium reassured her by offering a solution.

Sarah was told by a man that she must leave their home in Connecticut and go to the western United States, where she was to build a mansion for the souls of those who fell victim to the Winchester rifle.

Sarah obeyed Alan Koons and went to California, where in 1884 a large-scale construction began under her direction. The widow bought a ruined ranch in the Santa Clara Valley and hired several dozen workers to build the mansion. Already at the planning stage, strange things began to happen – Sarah did not hire architects, did not make any drawings, and did not bother to create a master plan for the development.

In addition, the mistress of the residence often changed construction teams, and therefore no one except herself knew the details of the layout of the mysterious labyrinth house. However, even an incomplete picture of the unfinished house raised questions – some windows did not look out onto the street, but into neighboring rooms, many doors and stairs in the room led to a dead end, all the bathrooms in the house were fake, except for one, to which only the hostess herself had access, and the corridors were so narrow that the workers could hardly squeeze through them.

According to legend, all these oddities in the layout were due to the fact that Sarah Winchester built the house in such a way that the spirits that pursued her could not find her and get lost in the maze created.

By 1906, the building was already a huge seven-story mansion with many secret rooms and hiding places, and rumors about the accursed house of the widow of Winchester were already spreading throughout the district. However, in the same year, the residence was somewhat modified after a strong earthquake, which completely destroyed the top three floors of the building.

This natural disaster reactivated Sarah’s activities, which began a new round of construction of the mansion. So, she decided to decorate the interior of the residence, bringing the most beautiful stained-glass windows, mirrors and art objects from abroad, as well as silver and gold chandeliers, expensive carpets and other luxury items.

By the way, the locals treated Sarah herself ambiguously. Rumors about the curse of the Winchester family had already spread throughout the city, and the strange behavior of the owner of the house only exacerbated the situation. In addition to the protracted construction, the frequent change of contractors and the mystical atmosphere of the house itself, the locals were confused by the habits of the widow Winchester. The woman was withdrawn, silent, often wandered around the neighborhood all alone, and the workers said that at night in her house the woman held séances in a secret room, and also slept in different rooms every night.

In addition, all those who visited the house described it exclusively as a “cursed” estate, the atmosphere in which inspired genuine fear and horror.

However, the rumors and tales of local residents can be explained by the fact that people were frightened by the unknown, and the secluded lifestyle of the billionaire’s widow raised many questions, the answers to which the townsfolk could find in mystical stories.

One way or another, on September 5, 1922, everything ended with the death of Sarah Winchester from heart failure. The widow spent almost forty years of her life and all the savings that her husband left her for the construction of all this splendor.
