Journey to America. Ocean and California

America’s “golden state” turned out to be not so golden. California, alas, I liked only pointwise and did not even enter the top 5 visited American regions. The climate is changeable, from hot to cold, the sights are very conditional and very beaten, and the Pacific coast, although very beautiful, is impossible to swim there: it is very cold even for a guest from distant cold Russia.

Still, the coastal part of California is very beautiful: do not forget that every piece of land here was ennobled by man, because just a couple of hundred years ago there was a continuous desert around. nine0005

1. The eastern part of California is boring and deserted, the natural diversity begins closer to the west.

2. And by the way, the famous Windows XP splash screen was made somewhere here.

3. The state’s most beautiful road is Route 1, which runs straight along the ocean.

4. Every few kilometers there are exits for admiring nature. In America, in general, you can often find special points on the tracks, “scenic points”, which are made so that you can stop, look at a beautiful view and take a picture of it without leaving your car on the side of the road. There is usually a parking lot and a toilet. nine0009

5.

6. Usually no one swims in the ocean at this time: it’s cold. There is no bay here, but immediately an open ocean: the nearest shore is China and Russia. I found only one beach where quite a lot of people swam, but it was very long to go down to it, and time was running out. So I didn’t swim in the Pacific Ocean, in Kamchatka in March, or here.

7. California also has good sunsets, but I’m sure Florida will be better!

8. Many people consider this state to be a paradise, people come here to relax and have fun. nine0009

9. And some of them move for life – to spend their old age by the ocean.

10. NATO military bases are also located here, training every day to finally attack Russia and destroy it!

11. One afternoon in April, I stopped by the Santa Barbara mission to see the famous location where the series was filmed.

12. There are arches here, indeed. But everything else made it clear to me that the creators of the longest series in history have never even been to Santa Barbara, not even the arches – and those others. nine0009

13. This is the most ordinary functioning Catholic monastery, and a lot of tourists are due to the religious, and not television fame of this place. Americans have never even heard of such a series 🙂

14. And here is another very interesting place in the very south of California – the city of San Diego. It also stands on the ocean, they say the city is beautiful, but I never had time to see it.

15. In Diego, I immediately rushed to the ocean beach, hoping to swim at least there. nine0009

16. It didn’t work out again, no one was swimming.

17. Perhaps because the beach is not intended for swimming at all – it is a beach for dogs.

18. More precisely, one half of it is for dogs, and the other half is for surfers.

19. Americans are passionate dog lovers. They carry them in cars, in special trailers for bicycles, stay with them in motels … In America, a dog is never an obstacle to a long journey.

20. A dog can guard things and an old truck. nine0009

21. Even the smallest dog can find or lose your slippers.

22. Sharing a swimming beach with dogs is an old American fad.

23. While people are playing or roasting meat on the grill, dogs also have something to do.

24.

25.

26.

27. But the dog will not protect you from birds.

28.

29. And these houses are rented out in San Diego for the summer. Yes, not Anapa! nine0009

30. If you thought I didn’t like California, I don’t. A truly heavenly place, very pleasant to look at and not bad inside, except for a few places.

31. Many glorious pages of American history are associated with California, primarily in the field of culture.

32. But the main thing is the staff of huge human labor. America was being explored from east to west, and California was the pinnacle of this colonization. Making California out of the desert is truly American. And this time – without any Hollywood scenery. nine0009

Well, how did we go to California. Four hours from the palm-fringed ocean to the giant snow-covered sequoias in the mountains

A young couple from Minsk told how they fulfilled their dream of driving along the most beautiful road in the USA.

– Initially, the plan was to go in the winter to warm up. We had the misconception that California winters are warm and sunny. Later, we learned that winter is the rainy season, and it won’t be hot there, only if it’s in the southernmost points of the state. nine0005

In the end, we decided to go at the end of November. And not in vain, because during the trip we managed to bask in the sun and breathe in the fresh frosty air in the famous parks and reserves. During the three weeks of our trip to California, we found only one rainy day.

LA LA LAND AND TRAFFIC IS THE SAME

November 20th – in Los Angeles +34. The warm air and the famous palm trees of the city are intoxicating, but after seventeen hours of flight and ten hours of waiting at the airport, all you think about is how not to get stuck in traffic. We were very alarmed by the words of the owner of the rented accommodation that it is worth staying in the airport area and not poking into the city until the evening. nine0009

Los Angeles is not only a city of palm trees and pink sunsets, but also a dusty, very arid metropolis. The effects of the California drought are immediately apparent when looking at the famous Hollywood Hills.

I can’t believe that a couple of years ago they were covered with greenery. Now they are yellow-brown, with rare bunches of dark green trees and shrubs.

Citrus trees and succulents feel best in the city, which filled all the yards and streets. Those same succulents that grow in our house in a small pot, here reach gigantic sizes. nine0009

It is almost impossible to walk in this city. Los Angeles just isn’t meant for that. You can walk along the footpath and at one moment realize that it has broken off, and you are in the middle of a freeway in the city. For us, LA turned out to be the first city where it is really very inconvenient to move around without a car.

At the same time, there is a metro in the city, but for all the time there was not even a need to use it. Almost any route using public transport is plotted by Google Maps with an accuracy of up to a minute in the schedule. nine0005

If there are only a couple of days in the city, it is best to use buses, Uber or Lyft when demand is low. Well, in general, it is better to avoid any traffic during peak hours in every possible way, otherwise you are doomed.

The surprise was that the sunset in the city at 17:00. Therefore, the three-day plans had to be seriously adjusted in order to be in time. By the way, Thanksgiving also fell on our three days.

LOS ANGELES AS A HUGE PRIVATE SECTOR

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is the most dubious place, which is more like a boardwalk in a tiny resort town filled with animators and street freaks. Tourists around massively buy caps, T-shirts, and it seems that the very building of the Dolby cinema, where the Oscar is awarded once a year, in the remaining time turns into an analogue of our Dynamo stadium in the past, with stalls and tents. In general, we did not feel the atmosphere of creativity and art there.

Beverly Hills is the most expensive area with beautiful quiet streets where neat mansions hide in the shade of trees. The only thing that distinguishes them from any other beautiful residential areas around the world is ten times the reasonable cost. In general, Los Angeles is a huge one-story city, spread over one and a half thousand square kilometers.

There are also places that, of course, we fell in love with: the Venice Beach area with the promenade and picturesque streets, the Griffith Observatory with stunning views during pale pink sunsets, an ennobled downtown with courtyards with fountains or Christmas trees. . nine0009

PACIFIC HIGHWAY: SMALL TOWNS, OYSTERS AND SEAL ROOMS

On our last day in Los Angeles, we rented a car and drove north to Silicon Valley along the coast along America’s most scenic highway, Highway 1. By the way, car rental in the USA is a simple matter. It is enough to pre-book on the website, get acquainted with information about possible conditions with deposits and insurance, print a voucher and grab an international driver’s license. nine0005

By the way, it was nice to get a car of a higher class on the spot for free, since the cars of the requested class were already over. All car rental services accept only credit cards, but our debit cards go with a bang, the main thing is not to advertise this nuance there.

The road from Los Angeles to San Francisco on Pacific Highway 1 (not the best route, by the way) is about 800 kilometers, and this is the most beautiful part of the trip. We decided to stretch the road for three days in order to enjoy the views, stopping along the way, and not go at night. nine0009

Landscapes are mesmerizing along the entire route. The Big Sur coast, the seal rookery near San Simeon, the 17-mile Pacific Grove Road are the most popular points along the way, but they are beautiful.

We also remember the small towns where we stayed for the night. Especially the town of Arroyo Grande near the farmlands, where we stumbled upon a fresh seafood stand next to a gas station and dined on oysters right on the sidewalk.

A week later, we were horrified to watch reports of the Thomas fire in the Santa Barbara area and the places we admired. nine0009

The way traffic is arranged on the road deserves respect. Even a child will understand the traffic rules of the USA, everything is so simplified there. For almost 2,000 kilometers, we have not noticed a single case when someone tries to slip, cut or in any way “teach a lesson” to other road users.

The worst thing that can happen to you on the road – you miss the necessary exit from the highway. But we, not very experienced drivers, did not have any difficulties on the road during the entire trip. nine0009

“POSSIBLY BEFORE CHRISTMAS THE SEQUOIA GRANT WAS ALREADY GROWING IN THE TERRITORY OF THE MODERN PARK”

There are two seasons for visitors to Yosemite National Park: winter and summer. Winter (the one we got into) lasts from mid-November to March. After the first snowfall, the park blocks part of the route roads until spring. Among them, the most beautiful is Tioga, which crosses the Yosemite Valley through and through. It is along it that the main beauties are located, according to publicly available information. nine0005

However, even a visit to the Yosemite Valley itself, where the famous El Capitan mountain and several insanely beautiful waterfalls are located, will make your head spin.

Also, when planning a trip in winter, keep in mind that at the entrance you may be asked about the availability of special chains on the wheels in case of snowfall on the road. By the way, it is forbidden to officially install these chains on a rented car. Since there was no snowfall on the day of our visit, we were not asked about the chains. nine0009

When visiting the park, it is better to check the weather forecast by calling the phone number indicated on the official website of the park – the machine will give a summary for the next day about road conditions, temperature and blocked routes.

It gets dark around 5 pm in winter, and if you are not going to spend the night in the park, it is better to go back two hours before sunset, because the road is a one-lane serpentine with a dizzying cliff. After dark, driving there is simply unsafe. nine0005

The views on the road are gorgeous, almost everywhere there are exits and observation decks. The main thing is to be lucky with the weather and there was no heavy fog or rain.

Since my childhood I had a dream to see live giant sequoias. Initially, we planned to go to Sequoia National Park, but decided to optimize the route and enjoy the sequoias from the other side of the park, where Kings Canyon begins.

These trees are absolutely amazing: they do not burn in fire, in times of drought they are able to find and pump out water, and most importantly, they live for several thousand years. If lightning strikes a sequoia, the tree simply smolders until the spark goes out completely. These are plants with amazing survival. nine0005

General Grant is the second tree in terms of volume and the first tree in terms of circumference in the world, it has been living on Earth for about 2000 years! Perhaps even before the birth of Christ, the Grant sequoia was already growing in the territory of the modern park. Unfortunately, the photos do not convey the necessary feeling and effect. The size of the trees is simply fantastic.

This is not the only place where sequoias grow, but sequoiadendrons (giant sequoias) live only in the mountains of the western Sierra Nevada. nine0005

“GOOGLE’S OFFICE LOCATION IS LIKE A KIDS’ DREAM CAMP”

Silicon Valley is a collection of small towns that are home to major corporations such as Google in Mountain View, Apple in Cupertino, Facebook in Menlo Park, LinkedIn in Sunnyvale.

Google’s offices in Mountain View are built similarly to the campus of Stanford University, which, according to the stories, should help maintain a creative atmosphere. Well, it turned out great – the company’s territory is like a children’s dream camp: there are recreation areas and places to work in different outdoor locations, and there is a choice between canteens and food trucks that open specially at lunchtime, and a park with sculptures. even a kindergarten for employees’ children. Inside, there is an atmosphere of general revival, employees with badges run in groups. And all this among the palm trees and the blue sky above. nine0005

You can enter the company’s office only by obtaining a pass, which must be given by the company employee who invited you to visit. On the pass, in addition to your name, there is also the data of the employee. In a way, he is responsible for you.

Google offices are well equipped and comfortable, but it seemed to us that over the past five years, even our IT companies have borrowed most of the planning and “tuning” ideas. The only difference, of course, is in the budget – few people can afford, for example, to feed all employees for free, as Google does. By the way, this fact does not like the state, which receives less tax. nine0005

If you do not work for one of the companies, then living in the Valley does not make sense: housing prices are huge, and at the same time, there is practically no cultural life.

The very boundaries between sleepy towns are blurred and often only defined by an official address. Employees can live in one city and work in another or come here from San Francisco, so during peak hours, all the highways are in traffic for several hours a day. This is due to the presence of a carpool – a high-speed lane for those who have at least one other passenger in the car. nine0005

We also liked Stanford University itself – there was a feeling that we were suddenly transported from California somewhere to Spain. A fabulous little college town with colonial architecture, full of palms and citrus trees.

“FROM BEHIND A BUSH, A HUGE COYOTE TURNED DIRECTLY AT US”

Upon entering San Francisco, the unusual landscape of the city is immediately striking – its hills and layering. For us, San Francisco turned out to be one of the nicest cities in the world that we visited. There is everything that we lack so much: mild climate, amazing landscape, original architecture, ocean, palm trees and pine trees. nine0005

At the same time, San Francisco has a reputation as the most expensive city in the United States. Perhaps that is why there are so many homeless people in the city living in tents that stand right along the streets. At the same time, they are usually deployed in the low-lying areas of the city, since the upper ones are strongly blown by the winds.

In hilly cities it is difficult to walk the streets, guided only by the map: there you see the path from point A to point B, but in reality it turns out that you have a steep mountain in front of you, which you have to climb for about thirty minutes. nine0005

It is interesting that in some park areas of the city there are “Сoyote alarm” signs. We did not attach any importance to this until, in the forest near Baker Beach, a huge coyote turned out from behind a bush right at us. But you should not be afraid of such meetings, these coyotes do not attack people.

I really liked the architecture of San Francisco: small carved houses surrounded by palm trees, the locals call them Painted Ladies. By the way, the local authorities try to preserve the architecture as much as possible, which gives a peculiar flavor to the city. nine0005

We flew back from San Francisco to Los Angeles at low altitude, and the route passed right through Ventura County, where the Thomas Fire, already considered the largest in the history of modern California, destroyed more than 1,100 square kilometers. The entire side of the plane did not depart from the windows, the sight was really creepy.

A few days after our flight, the fires reached Santa Barbara. When I saw what the bay looks like with purple mountains and palm trees after, I almost burst into tears: all the mountains were on fire. The fires could not be extinguished due to strong winds; as the locals say, a similar situation is repeated every year due to drought, entire towns burn down, people are left homeless. By the way, “Thomas” is still not extinguished. This is heavenly California. nine0005

For our trip, we took with us a complete set of winter, autumn and summer clothes. It was not possible to exclude something: in the mountains, the temperature was about zero, in San Francisco and Silicon Valley – a warm autumn, and Los Angeles met with hell at 34 degrees.

The road home (4 flights) turned out to be the most unpleasant moment, which stretched out for almost 40 hours due to transfers and waiting for new flights, but you need to be prepared for this.
