Mission Statement
The Childcare Council’s Mission is to make the future bright for children and to provide rich and nurturing child development experiences for our young children. We recognize that children are our future, and that children have the capacity to succeed and reach their maximum potential if provided rich and nurturing experiences.
In order to fulfill the Mission, the Child Care Council goals are:
- To become the model in the implementation of innovative educational programs and the operation of child development centers, meeting the needs of children and their families.
- To become the premiere administrator of government funded programs, the benchmark training entity for staff and administrators in the child development industry.
- Seek a collaborative partnership with public and private organizations in order to create value for all entities through effective collaboration and integration of shared resources.
ABOUT THE AGENCY
Founded in October 1969, the Child Care Council is a private non-profit 501((c) (3). Although the range and scope of the programs have evolved over the years, the Child Care Council has provided valuable child development services for low to moderate–income families by operating child-development centers, professional development programs for child-development personnel, and a network of after school programs.
Following are some of the services that the Child Care Council provides throughout the Community:
EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION CENTERS
The Child Care Council’s success can be measured in terms of its ability to cooperate effectively with the City of Houston in the prudent use of block grant funds and private organization in the implementation of innovative educational programs.
ADVANCING INFORMAL STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
The Advancing Informal STEM Learning program invests in program development of innovative and field-advancing out-of-school STEM learning and emerging STEM learning environments.
Our informal focus is to emphasize that the program is interested in out-of-school learning that makes learning Lifelong, Life Wide (occurring across multiple venues) and Life Deep (occurring at different levels of complexity).
Our STEM focus recognizes that the program is not just centered on science, but all of STEM towards ESTEAM. (Emergent, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) through media literacy as a platform for STEM exploration.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM (CDBG)
The City of Houston has contracted with the Child Care Council to administer the block grant funds it receives from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and provides the services necessary for the successful planning and implementation of neighborhood revitalization programs, which includes certified agencies that support individuals’ efforts to seek and maintain employment and improve their economic viability.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONALS

KEEP YOURSELF AND THE KIDS ENGAGED IN HOUSTON THIS SUMMER – Our Texas Not everyone goes to camps and with their parents on vacation. And if they leave, few people manage to do it for the whole summer. What to do on hot days in Houston? Here are some great places that both kids and adults will love.
1. Enjoy a beautiful sunset at the James Turrell Skyspace
Built in 2012 on the grounds of Rice University, the Twilight Epiphany is a stunning venue acoustically designed to host Shepherd Music School music events. The building is equipped with a string of LEDs that are projected onto the ceiling and throughout the structure, creating a one-of-a-kind backdrop for a beautiful sunrise or sunset that can be viewed twice a day for free.
2. Spend half a day at the Houston Zoo
It’s best to do it in the morning before it’s so hot. The Houston Zoo is the second most visited in the United States. There are over 6,000 animals here, and there are great programs to keep everyone entertained. You can visit the African forest to see gorillas, zebras and giraffes or meet underwater creatures and seals. Then listen to the zookeeper’s stories, splash around in the water park and watch the elephants bathe daily.
3. Descend into the underground cisterns at Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern
Formerly, from 1926 to 2007, this was a 15 million gallon underground drinking water tank. Now this unique underground structure is a public space for immersive art installations. The 17-second echo cistern is a great place to test your vocal cords, learn about Buffalo Bayou Park’s unique history, or just spend a few quiet minutes in a peaceful, repurposed space.
4. Discover Free Programs at Houston Libraries
Nearly 40 libraries throughout Houston provide a wide range of free programs during the summer months. The program is designed for a certain age, so everyone, from toddlers and teenagers to adults, can find something for themselves. Families can join reading programs, STEM classes, language and craft classes, and more. Check back frequently at your nearest library branch to stay up to date on free classes in Houston this summer.
5. Spend a day by the bay on Galveston Island
Located about an hour from downtown Houston, Galveston Island offers more than 32 miles of beaches on the Gulf Coast, so whether you’re traveling with your family or friends or just want to spend a day at the beach, there is a place for everyone. The wind from the bay always lowers the air temperature. Therefore, here it is almost always 10 degrees lower than in Houston. Visit the historic Strand, lined with Victorian-era buildings including the much-photographed Bishop’s Palace. Then enjoy a delicious meal at a restaurant on Seawall Boulevard.
6. Visit the Menil Gallery
The Menil Collection is located on 30 acres in the heart of Houston. Designed by Renzo Piano, who also designed New York’s iconic Whitney Museum, this is the perfect spot to view the gallery’s curated collection on a hot day. In keeping with the intentions of the founders of the Menil Collection, John and Dominique de Menil, there is never an admission fee.
7. Explore the underwater world at the aquarium in the city center
Over 300 species of aquatic life from all over the world can be observed in the huge 500,000 gallon aquarium. Once outside, you can ride the giant Ferris wheel or ride the train through the 200,000-gallon shark aquarium.
