A Guide to Happier Goodbyes

Some children bound into a new classroom without a backward glance. But many others are, understandably, a little more nervous about starting a new school with new friends and new teachers. It’s not only children who have a hard time parting ways for the day: The morning daycare drop off can be hard on adults, too.

Luckily, our teachers and staff have a lot of experience with supporting children during the first days at school. (We’ve also provided reassurance and support to many, many parents.) Here are some positive ways to say goodbye at school that will help put everyone at ease. Because when your child is happier, so are you.

1. Try a Daycare Drop-Off Practice Day

Speak with your Center Director about scheduling a drop-in day or partial day shortly before you return to work. This gives you and your child a chance to test out spending time apart. This also allows you to focus on their needs (and your own feelings) without the added pressure of having to get to the office.

At KinderCare, we’re committed to building warm, welcoming and supportive classrooms for children of all abilities, backgrounds and experiences.

2. Take Care of Your Own Feelings

If you’re anxious about leaving, your child may start to feel anxious as well. During these early days, think about ways you can ease your own worries about the daycare drop off: Talk with friends or other parents with young children, go to the movies, or go for a walk. Of course, you may still get a little teary-eyed at school drop-off, and that’s totally fine and completely normal: We get it.

3. Be an Early Bird at School Drop-Off

Some children do best when a parent limits the amount of time spent saying goodbye. Other children want the reassurance of a parent’s presence in the classroom until they feel more comfortable. Find what works for you both, and if your child needs more time, arrive early to help them adjust to the transition.

4. Focus on Your Child

In the bustle of daycare drop-off—unloading diapers, delivering daily instructions, depositing an extra sweater—it’s easy to get distracted. At drop-off, take a little time to focus your attention on your child. Get down at their level and be with them before saying goodbye. This can help them relax and ease their fears.

5. Discover the Classroom Together

Commenting with enthusiasm about the children’s artwork on the wall, the sand table, or warmly greeting teachers and other children communicates to your child that school is a fun and exciting place. If you are curious and positive, it encourages them to do the same.

6. Be Aware of Adding to the Separation Anxiety

Slipping away while they’re not looking can actually add to separation anxiety in toddlers. They can become more anxious if you suddenly disappear and they can’t find you. Let your child know you are leaving and that you will be back. Be clear and matter-of-fact: I’m going to leave in five minutes and go to work. I’ll come back and pick you up after you’ve eaten lunch.

7. Acknowledge Their Feelings

Children show emotion through crying, and it’s normal for them to do so. Acknowledging their emotions is an important part of helping them cope with morning transitions. You might say: I see that you’re sad that I’m leaving. I will miss you, too. I’ll be back to pick you up after you have recess this afternoon.

A Lifetime Of Confidence Starts Here

Our teachers help every child build the confidence they need to try new things and explore the world around them.

8. Talk About the Good Stuff

Remind your child of the fun things they’ll do that day. Wow! You’re going to paint at the easel today! What do you think you’ll paint? Talk them through the classroom schedule. Routines are comforting for young children, and their worries at school will lessen as they learn what to expect.

9. Ask for Advice About Daycare Separation Anxiety

Your child’s teachers and Center Director have helped many other families just like yours. As the teachers get to know your child, they can direct them to a favorite activity that will help them settle more easily into the classroom. Center Directors can offer advice if your child needs more support. Be patient as you and your family find your way.

10. Call Us

Feel free to check in to see how your child’s day is going. Moments after you leave, they may be completely engrossed in building a block tower. Call us! Chances are that they’re doing well, and you’ll have a better day knowing they are having a good day.

If you have had tough transitions, remember that it gets better! Try and have patience—and stay positive—while everyone adjusts. And don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to talk with you about your concerns so that everyone can have a great drop-off. A few weeks from now, you will walk into the classroom and your child will wriggle out of your arms, ready to start the school day. You are not alone, and you’re doing great.

Tips to make daycare drop off easier

Posted by Kelly Friedl on

Is your baby or toddler headed to daycare this season? If so, you might be feeling a little apprehensive about how your child will handle the move away from the comforts of home — and it’s likely you’re going through a bit of separation anxiety as well. That gut-wrenching feeling is natural; but parents shouldn’t fret. Kids often adapt quicker than we expect, and attending a daycare where your tot can interact with new kids, other people, and new experiences can be a good thing. To make that leap, we’ve rounded up a few tips to smooth the transition to daycare for both parent and child.

Tips for your child

1. Bring something familiar.
A reminder of home will make those first few trips to daycare a little easier and provide comfort on difficult days. We recommend “anything that smells and feels like home” for your child. That might be a piece of a blanket, mom or dad’s T-shirt, or a small stuffed animal.

2. Create a goodbye ritual.
One great tip is for families create a consistent goodbye ritual to create a fuss-free drop off. That might mean giving a high-five, saying, “I love you,” or a kiss on both cheeks — whatever feels natural to the parent and child. Make sure you do the same routine each time, so your child knows what to expect. This daily sendoff helps set a “limit for yourself” as well – so you won’t be tempted to linger at the door, making the goodbye harder for you both.

3. Talk it through.
Children will benefit from parents talking through what this new thing called daycare is going to be like. For example, you can say, “Starting tomorrow, we’re going to drop you off at so-and-so’s and there are going to be other nice kids there! You’re going to have lunch and play with these toys, and then after naptime and snack. Then I’m going to come pick you up.” The child will pick up on your speaking cadence and emotional tone and they’re going to get a sense of reassurance. It gives them a sense of predictability and that everything’s going to be OK. Repeat the story once daycare starts for continued reassurance.

4. Try a gradual start.
If possible, let your child ease in to daycare by starting him off with a part-time schedule. The ideal transition into daycare is one that is gradual, so maybe you’re going with them for an hour one day, and the next day, you’ll leave them there for 20 minutes to play while you go get a coffee. Many daycare providers will recommend a similar gradual start, beginning with either a couple of half days or starting on a Thursday, rather than Monday, so the child or baby doesn’t immediately plunge into a five-day-a-week, full-time schedule.

Tips for you, the parent

5. Do your research.
Invest some hours to research the best provider for your family. Ask plenty of questions like, “Is your staff CPR trained?” and make sure they’re readily providing answers that assuage those fears. If you’ve done your due diligence picking the right place, including observing the staff in action, then you can tell yourself the rest of it is your normal parent anxiety.

6. Create a night-before checklist.
Daycare veterans will likely tell you one of the hardest things is actually just remembering to pack all that stuff! Toddlers need their items labeled, pack spare diapers or pull-ups, wipes, extra sets of clothes and possibly lunches and snacks. Post a daycare checklist near the front door (or on your phone) to help remember daily items. Do not forget seasonal stuff like sunscreen and hats or boots and hats and mittens. Pack everything the night before and you might just minimize a bit of that morning chaos, improving everyone’s mood!

7. Do regular check-ins.
Letting someone else care for your child can make many parents feel a loss of control. You might worry about how much they’re sleeping or wonder who their favorite friend is at daycare. Foster a rapport with the provider to make asking such questions easier. It’ll provide a better glimpse into their new world away from home — hopefully one that makes you both happy. At pickup and drop-off, you can have some of these conversations with the teachers.

8. Expect some tears.
It can take anywhere from one day to four weeks, depending on their temperament, for a child to adjust to daycare. Until then, you might see a few tears upon pickup. Those tears are also an important milestone for growing children as they learn to adapt to different social situations where there might be different rules than at home. It helps them with flexibility and adaptation, so just let those tears flow.

5 Steps to Overcoming Drop Off Meltdowns

The dreaded daycare drop-off. Something every parent DOESN’T
look forward to. First you attempt to get those little teeth brushed, then feed
them breakfast, and finally you try to get their shoes on (hopefully matching).
But the most challenging part of your child’s morning routine is dropping them
off at daycare. It’s the final and most difficult hurdle in your morning race.
Often, parents describe this separation as gut wrenching, not only because it’s
hard on the child but it’s also hard on you as the parent. It doesn’t matter if
you’re a new parent or a parent of 3, it doesn’t gets easier until your child
gets used to daycare.

Even though this transition is an uncomfortable experience,
you should take comfort in a few facts. First, daycare exposes your child to
diversity. New children, new adults, new learning experiences; embarking into
the unknown is where we really experience learning and growth. Research shows
that quality daycare positively affects children’s growth in independence,
cognitive learning, and socialization. Second, children can adapt at a surprisingly fast rate and with a little help,
you can nudge them into an easy transition. How do you nudge them, you may ask?
Here are 5, Little Lukes approved, ways to make daycare drop-off easier.

How to Help Your
Toddler Adjust to Daycare

Talk it Through

Communication is key, especially with young children. The
best way to ease your child into daycare is to establish a level of trust by
talking with them and ensuring them that daycare is mommy and daddy approved.
Sure they may cry and some mornings they may say they don’t want to go.
However, if they have that proper guidance ensuring them that this unknown
territory isn’t as scary as they think, they will likely acclimate quicker.

Ease Them Into It

With some children it might be best to approach daycare with
a gradual start. It can be very stressful on a young child to go from spending
every day with mom or dad to spending every day with a new adult, with no transition
in between. In the first week, try starting back at work on a Thursday so the
weekend begins sooner or try taking them to daycare two or three days a week
and having them stay with someone they are familiar with, like a relative or
family friend, two or three days a week. After they get used to the new
children, adults, and experiences at the center, you can then increase them to
5 days at the daycare.

Leave Them With
Something Familiar

Most toddlers have a particular toy or blanket that they really
enjoy. Be sure to pack that item in their daycare bag. If they associate
something they love dearly with a new experience, then the new experience will
be an easier transition.

Tip: Another idea is to send them to preschool with a mom or
dad memento. This memento could be an item that belongs to you and reminds them
of you, such as a scarf or chunky bracelet. It could even be a travel sized
picture album with two or three photos of you and your little one. Throughout
the day when they feel homesick this memento will help them feel closer to you.

Always say Goodbye

So you’ve had a few discussions about daycare, you’re easing
them into, and you’re helping them create good experiences by sending them with
a favorite toy. Be sure to maintain this trust by always saying goodbye.
Sometimes we might be tempted to slip out the door when our child is distracted
because we’re late for work. All this will do is make them associate daycare
with, “what happened to mom?” Instead create a special, but quick, goodbye
ritual. You can have a secret handshake or a special hug. It will help them
feel way more secure.

Tip: If you leave your child with a mom or dad memento, make
it part of your goodbye ritual. You can kiss the item and tell them you’re
filling it with love.

Get Out More

Last, but most certainly not least, in the time leading up
to and during your daycare transition, give your little ones a chance to
exercise their independence. As they grow they will encounter more and more
opportunities where independence is needed. As a way to help them feel as
comfortable as possible when these future situations arise, find small ways to
allow them to familiarize themselves with their independence. Go for a walk
while leaving them with your significant other, take them to grandma’s house
while you go shopping with a friend. As they grow, mom and dad will not always
be around and it’s best to help them understand that that’s perfectly ok. As
they start to understand this, you will likely find that daycare drop off will
become easier.

How to Say Goodbye at Drop Off and Avoid the Tears

When my 2.5-year-old daughter, Addy, was between 4 and 7 months old, she struggled with separation anxiety. I noticed it the most when I would drop her off at childcare at our church on Wednesday mornings. I attended a Bible study group comprised of moms, and we would leave our children in the caring hands of volunteers in the church’s nursery. As a mother, it was much-needed time for me to sip coffee and find encouragement from friends. But saying goodbye at drop-off was making my daughter and me very anxious.

Unfortunately, it was hard to drop Addy off. She would scream as soon as I’d hand her over to her caregivers. “She cried non-stop for the first ten minutes,” they’d tell me when I got back. “And not just sad tears, either. She seemed angry!” However, I was encouraged that at least she would stop crying after 10 or 15 minutes. As time passed, I found that Addy’s separation anxiety decreased as she became more familiar with the women who watched her and came to trust them.

This kind of scenario is all too common in drop-off situations. Saying goodbye to your child at drop-off is not always easy. Whether your baby or preschooler goes to daycare or you have a babysitter come over a few times a week, saying goodbye can be rough. Even dropping junior off at grandma’s house can elicit a tearful response from your child . . . and she’s his grandmother!

At these times, remember that your little one is constantly going through new developmental stages. As a result, you may find that one day it’s easy to drop him off at childcare and say goodbye, while the next day, he cries and finds it nearly impossible to let go of you! Through my experience as a mom, babysitter, teacher, and school administrator, I’ve assembled a few tips that I have found helpful in making the “goodbye” process easier.

1. Create a consistent routine before drop-off.

Children thrive off of a consistent routine. Predictability can help them better cope with the often unpredictable emotions they may be feeling at any given moment. A set routine lets them know what they can expect at certain times of the day. This gives your child a sense of security.

For example, having a morning routine and making sure that your little one has had their diaper changed, been fed breakfast or a bottle, and had a hug or cuddle time with you before you drop them off ensures a pattern that leaves them feeling well-cared for before you say goodbye.

2. Let your child know that you will come back.

Even if your child is under one year old, get in the habit of letting your child know that you’re leaving and when she can expect you to return. This can help establish a line of communication and a bond of trust between you and your child.

If your child is sensitive about you leaving, sneaking out the door when they aren’t looking typically doesn’t work. It may even backfire because when your child realizes you are no longer there, they may cry. Your lack of communication reinforces a feeling of abandonment and may worsen the overall situation. Ultimately, you want your child to understand that you will come back. And that it is okay for them to stay in this new place without you.

3. Don’t stay too long at drop-off.

Lingering at your child’s daycare or in the room with a babysitter can cause your child some measure of confusion. It can ultimately make it harder to part when it comes to saying goodbye. Unless it is your child’s first time with the sitter or childcare provider (in which case you can stay a bit longer to help them acclimate and get comfortable), it is better to give your little one a quick hug, tell them when you’ll be back, and say farewell.

I had a parent who tried to stay for almost twenty minutes every time she dropped her preschooler off in my class, though her child was doing fine. Her child would say goodbye to her, then run off excitedly and play. Her presence seemed to be more about her own anxiety and difficulty separating from her son than about the child’s actual circumstances.

I had to gently tell her that this process was not beneficial for her son. He would circle back, confused as to why she was still there. It also caused stress and confusion for other children who didn’t understand why one mommy stayed while their parents had left. This particular parent got upset and pulled her son out of my care. Still, I think the situation spoke more to the personal challenges she was feeling than anything else.

4. Encourage distractions.

Allow the caregiver to distract your child with a toy, activity, etc. Be sure to say goodbye, but release your child’s attention and help the caregiver take over with their method of distraction without injecting your own.

5. Be aware of your emotions; your child will pick up on them.

Your little one is a sponge and highly sensitive to how you feel, what you say, and what you do. This is because babies and young children are biologically designed to entirely depend on their caregivers at this early stage in life. So they are greatly attuned to what their caregivers are feeling.

This also means that your little one may absorb and even copy some of the emotions you’re feeling. With this in mind, it can be helpful to put on an upbeat face for junior when you say goodbye, to leave him with a sense that everything is okay.

I’m not suggesting stuffing your feelings—if it’s hard for you to say goodbye and you’re feeling sad, it’s healthy to address those feelings with another adult. You could even talk with your little one about what saying goodbye feels like. But do this in a setting outside the classroom, not when you’re about to leave your child (i.e., at home together on the weekend).

6. Talk to your caregiver.

Maintaining an open line of communication with your child’s caregiver helps in all areas of your child’s development, including navigating the drop-off process. Have a conversation with your caregiver about what to expect at drop-off. Also, tell them about any fears, hopes, or expectations you may have related to the experience.

It is perfectly normal to have some anxiety around the process of saying goodbye to your little one when you leave them with a new caregiver. Ideally, have this conversation with your childcare provider before the drop-off—for example, via e-mail, at an in-person classroom meeting, or on a phone call.

7. Understand what stage of development your child is going through.

The American Academy of Pediatrics notes separation anxiety generally peaks between ten and eighteen months. It should decrease during the last half of the second year. Be aware that your child may go through periods of ease at drop-off, followed by weeks of difficulty saying goodbye. This is not necessarily a reflection on your methods or your caregivers. It may be as simple as a change in their cognitive development. Additionally, your child is more vulnerable to separation anxiety when he feels tired, hungry, or sick. So keep that in mind if the struggle seems sudden or out of the ordinary.

If the crying is constant and happens consistently for months, you may want to consider a different childcare option. Listen to what your gut is telling you. If you feel strongly that the childcare situation is not best for your child, consider turning to friends, family, or other reliable sources to help you find an alternative childcare option. Likely, the caregiver you’ve chosen is great, and your little one’s separation anxiety will pass within weeks. Soon, saying goodbye at drop-off will be a quick and easy affair. And before you know it, you’ll be the one crying as you drop them off at college!

Why is my child still crying when I leave him at daycare?

Parents can experience guilt, anxiety, frustration or sadness because their child cries during goodbye and drop-off at child care. These are perfectly normal behaviors for a child to display. In fact, separation anxiety is a typical part of child development and are a sign of healthy attachment. Even knowing that your child’s tantrum will calm moments after you leave, separation anxiety can leave both you and your child feeling unsettled.

Babies tend to adjust well to new caregivers. In many cases, parents feel more anxiety than their child when dropping their child off at daycare or leaving her with a sitter. Most infants younger than six months take well to other caregivers as long as their needs are being met.

Ages and stages of separation anxiety

Infants
As early as four to five months of age your child may begin to grasp the concept of “object permanence.” This is when infants begin to understand people and objects still exist even when they aren’t within sight. Your infant may recognize that when she can’t see you it means you are not there with her (even though you may just be in the adjacent room). Infants also don’t have a concept of time, so they can’t distinguish the difference between your being the kitchen for five minutes versus your dropping them off at child care for the day. They are only aware that you left, and, naturally, this leaves them feeling anxious and upset.

Toddlers
Some children may not develop separation anxiety until around fifteen to eighteen months of age. At this age, your child begins to develop her independence. This self-awareness also increases her awareness of separation from people with whom she has bonded. Her reaction to your leaving may be tearful, loud, and difficult for her or an adult to control.

Preschoolers
Around the age of three, many children understand the effect their tearful anxiety has on families during separation. Children at this age may cry or fuss when things don’t go their way, including being picked up from or dropped off to child care.

For all children
Children of any age may be extra fussy during separation if they are hungry, tired, or not feeling well. Children who are challenged by a new developmental task, like transitions in child care rooms or providers, may briefly forget a recently learned skill, such as potty training. Don’t worry if your child reverts back for a while, steps backwards are normal and temporary.

Tips to help you and your child cope with separation anxiety

Practice makes comfort
If your child is starting a new child care program or entering a new classroom, make a few visits together before it’s time for a full day. This allows your child time to explore her new surrounding and toys and meet her new classmates while you meet the teacher and learn about the classroom structure and routine. It’s normal to have a few worries when trusting another person with your child, but if your child senses hesitation from you, he may feel unsafe. Getting to know the teacher and classroom a few days ahead of time will help to put both you and your child at ease.

Be sincere, consistent and calm
Although it may seem less disruptive, don’t sneak out while your child is distracted. This may stress your child during the day and cause your child to cling to you on other mornings for fear of you leaving without saying goodbye. Instead, acknowledge his concerns and be sensitive to his feelings. Your display of empathy will help your child to feel safe and understood. Develop a goodbye routine in which you give your child a loving and pleasant but firm goodbye. Remain calm and display confidence in your child. Comfort him by letting him know you will return. Use terms he understands, like “I will be back after lunch or nap time.” Give your child your full attention as you say goodbye, but be brief. Once you say goodbye to your child, leave without lingering to chat with the teacher or visit other children. Additionally, giving in to your child’s tears will only teach your child that tantrums are the solution to getting her way. Suggestions for goodbye routines:

  1. Create a unique handshake or special wave.
  2. Give two hugs and a kiss then wave goodbye.
  3. Leave a special love note or trinket to remind your child that you love her and will see her later.

Keep your promises
If you promised your child you would be back at a particular time, follow through on that promise. This builds trust and allows your child to have confidence that he can make it through the time apart.

If your child has never been cared for by anyone other than you, has other stresses, or is shy by nature, she may have a more difficult time coping with separation anxiety. It is unusual for daily anxiety to persist into the elementary school years. If you have a concern about your child’s level of stress or anxiety when you leave her with others, talk with your pediatrician.

Remember, your little one’s reluctance to leave you is an affectionate sign of a meaningful attachment.  With preparation, consistency and time you will both get through this period. Eventually, your child will understand that when you leave you always return.

8 daycare drop-off tips for clingy little ones

This morning at daycare drop-off my toddler was doing his usual koala cling to my leg, making it almost impossible for me to walk. As I shuffled us to the sign in desk and shoved his little backpack in the designated basket, I could feel his separation anxiety rising.

Then, when I hoiked him up on my hip to say goodbye, his little face dropped and the tears and wailing erupted out of him. Sigh. Drop off can really suck some days.

Then, his gorgeous teacher, Ellie, did something rather cool.

She spoke to him gently and held up a little bottle of lavender oil for him to sniff. In a matter of seconds his distress was replaced with intrigue. Next, he wriggled down off me and toddled over with her to investigate some other smelly things she’d brought in.

Now, I don’t know if it was the calming effect of the lavender, the distraction it provided or the bond Ellie has been carefully finessing with my little Sam that did trick, probably all three. Whatever it was, I was able to kiss him goodbye and walk happily out the door knowing my boy was settled and happy.

So it got me thinking, what other tricks can we learn that might help our clingy little ones with saying goodbye to us at daycare? Here are a few I found.

1. Foster your little one’s connection to his carers

The relationship your child has with his teachers is so important. If he feels comfortable, safe and loved by them, he will be more able to settle. This is something that will grow over time but you can help to foster it in lots of ways.

Talk to him about his teachers when at home and on the drive to daycare. If he’s talking, help him to say and learn their names. Show him that you like them by always greeting them and talking to them warmly – even babies pick up on your emotional tone and get a sense of reassurance from this.

Encourage him to bring something from home to show his teacher or even pick a flower from the garden for them. Assure him that you also trust them by handing him to his carer after you say goodbye and then going so they can help your child to settle in their own way – this will build trust and a healthy dependence.

2. Have a drop-off ritual

Just like a bedtime routine helps your little one anticipate that it’s time for sleep, a daycare drop-off ritual will be comforting and reassuring to him.

Have an age-appropriate sequence of things you do when you get to kindy, such as put bag away, wash hands and kiss mummy goodbye so your little one is prepared for you going.

3. Don’t linger

Stick to your drop-off routine and try not to linger as this can make the goodbyes harder for your child. She also won’t want to be settled and soothed by her teacher if she has you around to cling to.

4. Have a goodbye script

As part of the daycare routine, a goodbye script which is something you say to your child every time you leave her at kindy, will help her learn when it’s time to say goodbye to mummy and that you will come back for her.

This could be something simple like, “Time to say goodbye. Ellie (or whoever the teacher is) is going to look after you now until I come back to pick you up. Bye bye.”

5. Always say goodbye

As tempting as it may be to slip out the door when your little one is happily distracted and playing, doing this may make it harder for her when she realises you’ve gone and doesn’t have any reassurance from you that you will be coming back for hier. Always say goodbye, even to babies.

6. Bring something from home

A comfort item such as a blanket or a soft toy to snuggle when you leave will help to soothe your child. Likewise, anything that smells like home for babies, such as your t-shirt will be of comfort. A laminated family portrait she can look at during the day is also a great idea.

Bringing something from home to share with her teacher and classmates when you leave is also nice. This could be a loved book or a favourite toy.

7. Make daycare mornings all about daycare

When your child wakes up on kindy mornings, tell her it’s a daycare day, even if she kicks up. This will help give her time to process it before being dropped there.

Read her a story about daycare, such as Maisy Goes to Preschool as this will get her excited about her day. Then talk to her over breakfast, when getting her dressed and on the drive to daycare about what fun things she might do, such as playing with playdough, singing songs and painting. Also, mention the teachers and certain friends she can expect to see today.

7. Learn what their favourite toys are at daycare

Chat to your child’s teacher about what toys she likes the most at kindy and ask if these can be put out when you drop her off. That way after you do the drop-off ritual and say goodbye, her teachers can do a combination of soothing and distracting her with her favourite toys as you leave.

8. Start off gradually

If your little one is new to daycare, drop-off tears are to be expected. You can help to reduce these though by making sure you transition your child into daycare to ease her into it. Most centres recommend orientation visits anyway. Try going with her for an hour on a few days and then leaving her there for 20 minutes to play while you go get a coffee. Then you could start her off with half days and build her up to full days.

Knyazhenika: description, planting and care

It is unlikely that today there is a person who has not heard about the wonderful northern cloudberry. But not everyone knows about the prince, although it is she who is the most delicious, fragrant and healthy berry of the northern latitudes. The description of the princess often mentions many names and nicknames given by the people to this valuable berry crop. The prince, or the prince, is also called the arctic raspberry, polyanka, mamura, noon. The princely berry was highly valued by the Russian princes for its special taste. Peasant women walked along the prince’s path into the forest and gave the berry to the princes as quitrent, which was of equal value with sable skins, embroidered with fabrics and handmade jewelry.

Description of the princess

The first feature that is indicated in the description of the princess is its external similarity with raspberries, which are related to the princess, belonging to the same family. The bush of the herbaceous perennial princess hardly outgrows the mark of a third of a meter, and its long and creeping rhizome lies in the soil at a depth of up to 25 cm. By the end of May, beautiful white, dark pink or crimson flowers bloom on low bushes of the princess, and July will bring the first fragrant berries.

The fruits in the description of the princess are defined as assembled drupes, their color varies from red-white and purple to dark cherry. The taste of berries resembles an intoxicating mix of exotic juicy pineapple and familiar strawberries. The structure of the berries is very delicate, so you should pick them carefully so as not to crush them in your hands. The berries can sometimes be harvested until September, as the ripening of the fruits is very uneven.

The description of the princess warns that the ground part of the culture will definitely die off in autumn, but this should not frighten an inexperienced gardener: the perennial rhizome will safely overwinter and continue to grow. With the advent of spring, young flower-bearing stems will definitely sprout from the buds located on the segments of the rhizome.

The berry culture prefers the arctic and temperate latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, feeling at ease in Siberia and the Far East, the Kuriles and Kamchatka, the Urals and Sakhalin, in the northern regions of the European part of Russia, Scandinavia and North America. When describing the natural areola of the growth of the princess, emphasis is placed on wetlands, the outskirts of peat bogs, damp meadows, forests and expanses of the tundra.

Through the efforts of modern breeders, today varieties have been bred that could be cultivated in more southern regions, but the culture has not yet found wide distribution there. Perhaps this situation is due to the fact that in the south this northern culture ripens worse than in the usual northern environment. When describing the princess, about 40 varieties of berry culture are mentioned. Among the most popular are varieties Anna and Sophia.

When describing the princess, her healing properties are certainly mentioned. A fresh leaf of the princess, applied to the affected area, disinfects the wound and draws pus out of it. An aqueous tincture of princess berries helps with stomatitis, tonsillitis and tonsillitis. Fresh, dried and frozen berries of kostyaniki alleviate the flu and colds, strengthen the immune system, energize and energize.

Babies adore the fragrant and bright princess drenched in cream: this is a healthy and tasty dessert that a child will not refuse. This property of berries is very much appreciated by mothers and grandmothers, because it is often difficult to convince children to eat berries, fruits or vegetables.

The usefulness of the princess depends on the presence of the most important chemical compounds in it. Its low-calorie fruits are part of many weight loss diets. Eating honeydew stimulates the production of endorphins, dopamine and serotanin, which reduce anxiety, reduce headaches and give a feeling of satisfaction. Princess berries help improve the condition of connective tissues, accelerate collagen synthesis, and slow down the aging of epithelial cells.

Landing princess

  • Select a well-drained area where the water does not stagnate for planting. The berry culture prefers nutritious loose peat bogs and sandstones rich in organic fertilizers, therefore, when planting princesses, it is better to avoid heavy clay soils. The plant will not like open places with a scorching sun: light partial shade with limited access to sunlight will be the best option. A worthy choice of a plot for planting a princess will be a place under large trees in the depths of the garden.
  • Having decided on a place for planting the princess, you should carefully dig up the soil, not forgetting to add mineral and organic fertilizers to it. During digging, based on 1 sq. a meter of earth is added in a bucket of rotted manure or compost, peat, sand, adding 500 g of wood ash, 30 grams of potassium salt and 60 grams of superphosphate to the mixture. After mixing all the fertilizers with the soil when digging, you need to carefully remove all plant debris and weeds.
  • The acidity of the soil for the successful development and fruiting of a berry crop does not play a decisive role, so it is not necessary to add lime to the ground in an attempt to reduce the level of acidity. Do not get carried away with excessive fertilization: excess nutrients will provoke active growth of shoots, reducing the potential for the appearance of berries.
  • Before planting the princess, the fertilized and dug up soil must be disinfected by pouring a hot light pink aqueous solution of potassium permanganate into it. As soon as the earth dries out, the time comes for planting the princess. The spring planting of the culture is carried out in the first week of May, and if the princess is planned to be planted in the fall, then the procedure is carried out no later than the second decade of October.
  • Berry crop is planted with an interval of 25 cm between the bushes, leaving a meter gap for row spacing. Landing is desirable to produce at the time of the least activity of the sun: in the morning or in the evening. The bush is placed in a planting hole and sprinkled with earth, gently tamping the soil with your hands. The final touch of planting the princess is hilling and abundant watering.
  • To prevent the soil from drying out, you can mulch the ground under the bushes using sawdust as a mulch, or lay out the ground with a layer of fallen needles or moss, which can protect young plants from weeds and scorching sun rays.

Caring for the princess

  • Careful observance of the basic rules of planting turns into a simple care for the princess. On hot summer days, when the thermometer stays at +25 C degrees and above, the plant needs not only daily watering, but also close monitoring of the soil condition: the earth must always be wet, its drying out is unacceptable. On cooler and cloudy days, watering is carried out only as needed, depending on the current state of the soil under the princess bushes. Proper care of the princess provides for morning or evening watering and excludes the possibility of daytime watering in sunny weather. In the presence of an extensive plantation of plants, it is realistic to take advantage of the possibility of drip irrigation.
  • An important component of caring for the princess is top dressing of the culture. From the next year after planting, the plants are fed with a complex fertilizer, which includes organic and mineral substances. The procedure for fertilizing is carried out in the spring once a year.
  • Caring for the princess requires a complete absence of weeds near the berry bushes, otherwise its yield may decrease. Loosening the soil and removing weeds are considered regular activities when growing princesses.
  • With constant care for the princess, there are no requirements for specialized pruning of plants, only periodic pruning of a sanitary nature is sufficient: damaged, dried or diseased stems and leaves are removed from the bushes. Sanitary pruning gives a powerful impetus to rejuvenation and further harmonious development of plants.
  • Caring for the princess will be incomplete without the prevention of viral diseases and infections that can affect the culture. If the first symptoms of viral diseases are detected, the affected stems and leaves of plants should be immediately removed and the entire plantation should be treated with a fungicide. After completing the treatment of diseased crops, garden tools must be disinfected with alcohol or calcined over a fire.
  • In the fight against insect pests when caring for the princess, a solution of Bordeaux liquid helps, which need to be sprayed not on the bush, but on the ground under it. Such drugs as fitoverm, karbofos, nitrofen have proven their effectiveness. Spraying of plants for preventive purposes is carried out in the spring, before the leaves appear, or in the fall, after the berries have already been harvested. In general, the princess is more resistant to disease than the related raspberries and blackberries.

Growing and caring for the princess can become a very interesting and exciting activity, since this traditional northern wild berry is still considered a rather rare guest in gardens and summer cottages. Berry culture is famous not only for its unique taste, but also for its excellent decorative effect: it will perfectly fit into the landscape of any garden space, being planted as a border, an original accent of a flower garden or lawn.

    Height Weight
    DUALFIX i-SIZE
    40-105 cm ≤ 18 kg

ECE = European Standard for Safety Equipment.

The child seat is manufactured, certified and approved in accordance with the requirements of the European standard for child restraints (ECE 129/01). The test mark (letter E in a circle) and the operating permit number are given on the orange operating permit (sticker on the seat).
Danger! If the user makes any modifications to the seat, the authorization to operate will no longer be valid. Changes can only be made by the manufacturer. Making independent technical changes can reduce the effectiveness of protection or lead to a complete loss of the protective functions of the seat. Do not make technical changes to the design of the child seat.
Danger! The Dualfix i-size model may only be used to secure your child in the car. It is absolutely unsuitable for use as a seat or toy at home.

    3. Vehicle use

Follow the instructions for using child restraint systems in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Follow the instructions for using the airbag. Please refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for information on which vehicle seats can be fitted with child restraint systems in accordance with ECE R16.

Attention! Before each ride, make sure the rotating housing is fully locked and both indicators are black.

    5. Care and maintenance

    Cleaning

Use only original Britax Roemer replacement covers. The cover is an integral part of the child seat and plays an important role in ensuring that the system works properly. Replacement seat covers can be purchased from your dealer.

    • The cover can be removed and washed with a mild detergent in the washing machine using the delicate wash program (30°C). Follow instructions on care label
    • The baby insert is washable like the cover. Before washing, remove all soft parts from the top and bottom. They do not need to be washed
    • Shoulder pads can be removed and washed in warm soapy water
    • Plastic parts and belts can be washed in soapy water. Do not use aggressive detergents (e.g. solvents)

    Caring for the buckle

Your child’s safety is only ensured if the buckle 04 works correctly. Malfunctions in the operation of the lock 04 are usually associated with the presence of dirt or foreign objects in it.

    • Lock tongues 29 are pushed out slowly after pressing the red release button
    • Lock tabs 29 no longer lock (they fall out as soon as you insert them)
    • Lock tongues 29 are inserted without audible click
    • The lock tongues are hard to insert (you feel resistance), the lock only opens with a lot of force

Remedy: To make the lock 04 work properly again, clean it.

    Cleaning the buckle

    1. Remove the cover from the seat as described below in the “Removing the cover” section
    2. Rotate crotch strap and metal plate 24 which locks the belt buckle 04 in the seat shell 17 90° in the belt slot
    3. Pull the metal plate 24 on the narrow tongue out of the belt slot 25
    4. Soak the belt buckle for at least one hour in warm water and dishwashing detergent. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it
    5. Install the metal plate 24 from the front into the groove until it stops
    6. Rotate crotch strap and metal plate 90° so that it is perpendicular to the direction of travel in the belt slot 25 in the seat shell 18
Danger! Pull on the buckle 04 to check that it is secure in the seat shell 17
    7. Pass the belt buckle 04 through the crotch pad 23 in the pouch, close the Velcro and attach the pouch

    Removing the cover

    1. Set seat shell 17 to vertical position
    2. Loosen the shoulder straps 09 and open the buckle 04
    3. Set the headrest 03 to the highest position
    4. First remove the elastic insert 33 from the bottom of the headrest 03 , then the retainer 32 at the top edge and remove the cover
    5. Set the headrest 03 to the lowest position
    6. Open the buttons on the left and right on the back of the cover and thread the shoulder straps 09 through the slot
    7. Open Velcro on crotch pad 23
    8. Remove the elastic insert 33 in the leg area and the plastic pads
    9. Remove the elastic edge of the cover from the seat shell
    10. Pull the cover from below using the adjustment button 13 together with the adjustment strap, belt buckle 04 and then through the slot in the headrest 03

Danger! The child seat must not be operated without a cover.

    Putting on the cover:
To put on the cover, follow the steps in reverse order.
Attention! The straps should take the correct position in the slots of the cover.

    Removing the shoulder pads

    1. Rotate the seat shell 18 to the reverse position
    2. Loosen shoulder straps 09 as much as possible
    3. Open the Velcro fasteners 08 on the shoulder pads
    4. Open pocket for operating instructions 17
    5. Slightly pull out the shoulder belts 09 and remove the belt loops of the shoulder pads 08 from the plastic longitudinal elements 30 of the shoulder belt height adjuster
    6. Pull the shoulder pads 08 forward out of the slots

    Putting on the shoulder pads:
Reverse the above steps to remove.
Attention! Do not twist or confuse the shoulder pads 08 and the straps. The shoulder straps 09 must be in the shoulder pads 08 under the black tape.

    6. Safety instructions

Read the instructions carefully. Keep it with you in the pocket provided for this 17 on the body of the child seat. When transferring the child seat to third parties, these instructions must be attached to it.

For proper child protection, the Dualfix i-size child seat must only be installed and used in full accordance with these instructions! Otherwise, some child seat settings may limit the use of i-Size compliant positions.

    Danger! To protect your child:

    • In a traffic accident as a result of a collision or collision with an obstacle at a speed of more than 10 km / h, the child seat may receive damage that is not always visible to the naked eye. In this case, the child seat must be replaced. A damaged seat must be disposed of according to regulation
    • Check the child seat after any damage (e. g. if it has been dropped on the floor)
    • Regularly check all important components for damage. In particular, make sure that all mechanical components are in perfect working order
    • Never lubricate child seat parts with oil or grease
    • Never leave a child unattended in a car-mounted child seat
    • Pick up and drop off the child only from the sidewalk
    • Protect the child seat from direct sunlight when not in use. The seat becomes very hot in direct sunlight. Baby’s skin is very sensitive and can be damaged
    • The tighter the belt fits your child’s body, the better it is protected. Therefore, try to make sure that under the belt there is not too thick a layer of clothing
    • On long trips, stop regularly to give your child a chance to run and play
    • Use in the rear seat: move the front seat forward so that the child’s feet do not touch the backrest of the front seat (risk of injury!)

Danger! In the event of emergency braking or an accident, unsecured objects and people can injure other passengers. Therefore, you must always ensure that:

    • the seat has been installed at the power-bearing points indicated in this manual and marked on the child seat
    • Seat backs have been secured (e.g. rear folding seat secured)
    • all heavy and sharp objects in the vehicle (e.g. on the rear window shelf) have been detected
    • all passengers were wearing seat belts
    • the child seat has always been fixed in the car, even if the child is not in it

    Warning! Child seat safety precautions:

    • Do not use the child seat loose – even for testing
    • To avoid damage, make sure that the child seat does not get caught between rigid parts of the vehicle structure (vehicle door, seat rails, etc.)
    • Store the child seat in a secure place when not in use. Do not place heavy objects on the seat or store it in close proximity to heat sources or in direct sunlight

    Caution! To protect your vehicle:

    • When using a child seat, car seat covers made of materials that are susceptible to deformation (such as velour, leather, and similar materials) may become scuffed. For optimal protection of car seat covers, we recommend using the Britax Roemer child seat padding from our
    • accessory range

    7. Preparatory work

    1. If the car is not equipped with standard Isofix anchorages, slot the two anchorages 02 that are included in the delivery of the seat* into the corresponding Isofix anchor points on your car

Hint! The Isofix attachment points are located between the horizontal surface and the seatback.
    2. Set the car seat headrest to its highest position.

    * Receptacles facilitate the installation of a car child seat using Isofix anchor points and prevent damage to car covers. When not in use, remove them and store in a secure location. On vehicles with reclining seatbacks, the seating devices must be removed before the seatback can be reclined. The occurrence of any problems is usually associated with the presence of dirt or foreign objects on the receivers or on the hooks. Remove dirt or foreign bodies to eliminate such problems.

    1. Adjusting the bumper bar

and at the same time pull the stop bumper 10 up with the other hand until it is unlocked
