Staffordshire Terrier. Character and proper training. How to care for and feed

This breed is recommended to start self-confident and strong-willed people who can give the dog due attention and will be an authority for it. Not recommended for the elderly and those who lead a too passive lifestyle. In this article we will tell you everything about these dogs, their character traits, training, care and nutrition.

Country of origin

US

Life expectancy

10-15 years old

Height

43-46 cm for bitches and 46-48 cm for dogs

Weight

28 to 40 kg

Wool length

Short

The history of the origin of the Staffordshire Terrier is very extensive. The breed has existed for several centuries, and it was bred by crossing bulldogs and terriers. At first, the dogs were called bull terriers, then their current, official name appeared, which they received when they got to the United States, which is now considered their homeland. By the way, the breed is abbreviated as Amstaff. They proved to be excellent watchmen and guards, they were also repeatedly used in dog fights.

Standard description of the breed

Each purebred breed has some specific standards, deviation from which is considered a defect.

There are prescribed standards for amstaff.

First of all, these dogs impress with their magnificent appearance. They often instill fear in others, because they really look very formidable and harsh. They have penetrating, intelligent eyes and a solid structure.

The body is proportional, the dog is very athletic, excellent muscles are visible everywhere, and the walk is calm and confident.

This is a medium sized breed with a short head, strong limbs, small semi-lying ears. The eyes are wide-set, dark and oval, the nose is also black. The tail is medium in size.

The coat is very short, dense and very smooth. It can be one color, or a combination. The standard colors are:

What is considered a defect?

Everything that is outside the norm. In particular, more than 80% white or black is considered undesirable. A too long or short tail, pink eyelids, light-colored eyes, light-speckled noses, malocclusion, and the like are also considered a defect.

Interesting facts about the breed:

  1. These dogs have an incredible sense of smell, they sense danger long before it appears;

  2. These are very intelligent dogs, but they are also too stubborn, which sometimes causes difficulties in training;

  3. These are very hardy and strong dogs;

  4. They are constantly in need of mental exertion and frequent walks;

  5. Not suitable for beginners and teenagers, because they may not be able to cope with the temper of the dog;

  6. Amstaffs can get along with other pets as long as they are not annoying. If other residents of the house are too intrusive, then a serious chase can be arranged for them. It is better to educate the amstaff from the first days, and accustom him to cohabitation with other animals, then there will be no problems;

  7. This is an excellent breed for athletes, or employees who can use the dog at work;

  8. Amstaff cannot be settled in the yard, much less tied to a chain. They can’t stand the cold and don’t do well with limited freedom;

  9. Dogs are quite comfortable in a small apartment.

These are really fearless dogs. Their character is dominated by such qualities as: intelligence, activity, purposefulness, craving for victory. These dogs are always on guard, even when it seems that the dog is almost asleep and looks relaxed, he can group in a second and thus not even let a fly pass him by.

How a dog will be in adulthood depends very much on its owner and training. For example, amstaffs are not characterized by unreasonable aggression towards people, but if the owner puts it in his mind, then this can be quite a dangerous dog.

Staffordshire Terrier can be a great friend, companion, friend for children and all family members.

In order for a dog to grow up open, interesting and good, one should not suppress it at a young age, provoke stressful situations.

Amstaffs are calm, balanced and very patient by nature. In general, the genetic traits of this dog are simply wonderful, and they are ideal for guard dogs.

Let’s summarize the above with the positive and negative character traits of the Staffordshire Terrier.

Positive: energy, playfulness, loyalty, intelligence, endurance, ability to quickly learn new things, courage, quick reaction, sense of danger.

Negative: Impulsiveness, tendency to change according to upbringing and become angry or aggressive, desire to dominate.

Whether such a dog is suitable or not is up to the potential owner to decide.

Maintenance and care of the Staffordshire Terrier

After care, many can breathe a sigh of relief. Grooming a Staffordshire Terrier does not require much time or money. It is comfortable for the dog both in a private house and in a small apartment. It is important that the dog has his own cozy place to rest

Amstaffs do not shed much, but it is advisable to brush them daily. You can bathe only once every two to three months, or as it is heavily polluted. From time to time it is necessary to trim the claws, clean the ears and wipe the eyes.

Get yourself a special clipper, a special brush or a combing mitt.

Walking with the dog should be at least twice a day and preferably longer, hours. Frequent and active walks in the fresh air are necessary to keep fit.

Antiparasitic measures should also be included in the care of the dog. On account of this, you should consult with your veterinarian and regularly give your pet certain drugs from time to time, or wear special collars.

Staffordshire Terrier diet

Now about the Staffordshire Terrier diet. This is a breed that requires a balanced and nutritious diet. We will describe the main facts that will help the owner to correctly form a diet.

  • The daily diet should contain a lot of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which have a good effect on the muscle mass of the dog;

  • A dog can eat a properly formed portion in a maximum of 7 minutes. If food remains, then the next portion needs to be adjusted and its volume reduced;

  • It is necessary to feed an adult dog twice a day and only after walks, and not before them;

  • If we are talking about ready-made puppy food, then consult with the breeder which food to choose. It is not recommended to choose economy class feed;

  • Amstaffs are not prone to allergies, but sometimes it can happen;

  • Plenty of clean plain water, the basis of the daily diet.

What natural foods should I give to an adult dog?

Since the menu of puppies changes several times before the year, it is impossible to describe it all. It is better to agree on this issue in an individual consultation with a veterinarian. As for an adult, their diet should include the following:

  • Meat. At least 50% of the total diet. It should only be raw;

  • Cooked offal;

  • Vegetables. Their share in the daily diet is 30%;

  • Raw eggs;

  • Fruit;

  • Kashi.

Sometimes it is recommended to give the dog a fasting day and give only half the portion in the morning and half in the evening.

With a natural diet, it is advisable to ensure that the dog receives all the vitamins and microelements necessary for normal development.

Regarding dry food, everything is much simpler. One has only to make sure that the food is suitable for the dog’s age, is not expired, and contains all the necessary components.

What is not allowed in the diet of the Staffordshire Terrier?

  1. Do not overfeed a dog;

  2. Give her sweets, smoked, salty, spicy, legumes, oatmeal, barley;

  3. It is impossible not to comply with the regime.

How to train a Staffordshire terrier

Staffordshire terriers should be trained from the first days of their life in a new home. At the age of 7 months, you can start visiting special sites. Also, you can seek help from professional cynologists.

Everyone approaches the training of the Amstaff individually, focusing on their own ultimate goal. What you should know is that the breed is easy to train, but reacts negatively to aggression, and even more so to beatings. It is unacceptable. Well, you need to be patient, these dogs are quite stubborn, and at a young age they are also restless.

Health and Common Diseases of the Staffordshire Terrier

These are fairly robust and healthy dogs. But sometimes they can have the following problems:

  1. Diseases of the eyes;

  2. Hip dysplasia;

  3. Stomach and stomach problems;

  4. Arthritis;

  5. Deafness.

The dog must be vaccinated, properly fed, not overloaded and given everything that is recommended for this breed. Also, do not neglect preventive examinations at the veterinarian. In this case, the amstaffs will live long and feel great.

How to choose a Staffordshire Terrier puppy?

Like most purebred dogs, the Staffordshire Terrier is quite expensive, so you want to buy a healthy and purebred puppy. To make it so, you must adhere to the following tips:

  1. Choose trusted breeders;

  2. Familiarize yourself with the puppy’s pedigree, check the availability of the necessary documents;

  3. Pay attention to the appearance of the puppy. It should be clean, neat, without a sour eye and other alarming signs;

  4. We do not recommend buying this breed in the markets or via the Internet.

The Staffordshire Terrier is an excellent breed that can only be fully developed in the hands of a good owner. Approach the issue of adopting a pet very seriously, because it is a full-fledged member of the family.
