Christian leaders fight poverty – News
CHRISTIAN LEADERS TO END POVERTY
Calling poverty a “moral scandal,” leaders from across the nation’s Christian church spectrum met January 13-16 in Baltimore to delve deeper into the issue and then deliver their message to Washington.
Christian Churches Together members affirmed their conviction that serving the poor and working for justice are “at the center of Christian life and witness.” They built on a statement developed by consensus at the previous meeting, but recognized a new sense of urgency due to the economic collapse.
“The context has changed in every way since we last met,” said David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World and one of several people who spoke to the group. He said the number of poor people had risen alarmingly during the very years of unprecedented economic growth, and that many more people were now at risk. Any stimulus package should target the poor, he said.
“There is no better investment than the nutrition, health and education of all our people,” said Beckmann. Setting a course to eradicate poverty, he said, “will be a powerful global witness to the power of Jesus Christ. In the midst of an economic downturn, the biggest risk is a spiritual downturn.”
At a meeting with President Barack Obama’s Domestic Policy Transition Team, CCT leaders expressed their support for his pledge to reduce poverty. They called for any stimulus package not only to Main Street and Wall Street, but also to those without a mailing address.
To achieve its goal of halving poverty within 10 years, the CCT promotes four objectives: strengthening families, strengthening communities, making work work, and improving education. This will require a collaborative effort between churches, government, businesses, communities and families, they said.
“Four million more people live in poverty than eight years ago,” Wesley Grunberg-Michaelson, general secretary of the Reformed Church in America, said at a press conference. “Churches united like never before. Poverty is a moral failure, a scandal is not only a political issue, but a moral and spiritual one. . . . We have to work with each other and with the government to make sure this is overcome.”
“The whole gospel requires us to reach out to the poor,” said James Leggett, Presiding Bishop of Holiness Pentecostal Church International. “We believe that God is at work at this point in time.”
Jim Wallis, Sojourners leader, added: “Pastors of hundreds of millions of Americans say now is the time.” Earlier, Wallis reminded CCT leaders that the Bible contains about 2,000 verses about poverty. Ignoring these actions leaves a “leaky Bible”. Now there is “a new generation putting the Bible back together. ”
CCT is the largest Christian association in the country. Its participating church bodies are Evangelical, Pentecostal, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Historic Black, and Protestant. The organization also includes several national Christian organizations, including Evangelists for Social Action, Sojourners, Bread for the World, World Vision, and the American Bible Society.
The Church of the Brethren was represented at the meeting by Annual Conference moderator David Shumate and Brethren Press publisher Wendy McFadden, who is on the CCT steering committee.
At the CCT annual meeting, participants also had three sessions discussing evangelism, which will be the focus of next year’s meeting in Seattle.

FREE BOOK ON POVERTY
As part of its contribution to the CCT poverty alleviation initiative, the American Bible Society published Poverty and the Poor in the Bible, a collection of scripture passages from the Old and New Testaments that helps readers to reflect on God’s will regarding poverty and the poor. The Bible Society makes this portion of the Good News Bible available free of charge.
Includes a study guide, as well as the CCT Poverty Statement, a letter from the National Council of Churches signed by several Christian leaders, including Church of the Brethren General Secretary Stan Knofsinger, and an interfaith statement on poverty.
Poverty and the Poor in the Bible is available in packs of 10 and can be ordered from www.bibles.com or 800-32-BIBLE. Item request No. 121715. Delivery can be added.
