I was a walk in to have a Covid test done, I was told there was about 5 people ahead of me, I waited and was seen in about an hour and a half. The person who did the test was very nice, then she directed me to a room to wait on the doctor to give me the results. The doctor was very nice and apologized for my wait time. She told me the test results were positive for Covid and what the process would be. She called in a prescription to take. I thank her and left.

I felt so bad when I went to the clinic. I had an appointment so the wait was not very long. The staff could not have been nicer! They were so concerned about me and when they realized I had fever, they immediately gave me some Tylenol. They were very efficient and went above and beyond the care I have received over the past years with many physicians. They did not just breeze in and out with a quick prescription like so many doctors. I had a bad case of bronchitis and the doctor wanted to quickly get a handle on it because my lungs are not the best even on a good day!!
I appreciate their kindness and compassion. That’s hard to find now a days in our hurry up, get them in and get them out care we’ve come to expect.
I will definitely use them again!!

How much will an urgent care visit in Munford cost?
The price charged at an urgent care, whether in Munford or elsewhere, will be based on the location, and there are no actual standard costs between the clinics. Assuming you are paying with cash, you might come across an urgent clinic that charges you $50 while another situated some mile away charges you $100 for the same services. The standard cost in urgent care where insurance cover is not involved ranges from $100 to $125. This price is generally the standard price of a visit before extra services. There are a couple of additional care services that could make your appointment to an urgent care costly including x-rays and lab tests, medications and injections (such as immunization), casting broken bones, as well as stitches and splints. If you have a viable insurance plan in place, the standard pay will be between $20 – 50 depending on your insurance coverage and whether you are in contact with the provider.

What is urgent care?
Urgent care are available to assist patients that are looking for immediate, convenient medical care. In that manner, they are similar to an emergency room. The difference, however, is that ERs are meant to treat major, life-threatening injuries and illnesses while urgent care centers manage life’s minor bruises and bumps. In simple terms, an urgent care is seen as a walk-in health center that focuses in offering non-emergent health care conditions, including the treatment of the typical illnesses and injuries such as fractures and sprains, cuts and burns, scrapes, stings and bites, flu and cold symptoms, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and much more. Most urgent care facilities offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. For regular visits and check-ups on these clinics, you should expect to pay between $20 and $100. The good thing is that most urgent care clinics will accept major PPOs and insurance cover, Medicare, as well as self-pay in the form of credit cards or cash. Urgent care clinics are located in most parts of the country in various regions to offset emergency room visits and provide a gap in healthcare services. They take patients during all hours of operations, which offer a significant convenience to most people who have and continue to undergo the need for sudden and immediate medical attention.
When I called to ask about protocol of coming in because of covid-19, the receptionist was not friendly at all. We had to stop at the tent that was set up out front due to covid-19. Jessica was in the tent. She was very friendly and helpful. The staff at the front desk were not friendly at all. They did not seem to want to be there. The doctor was friendly and answered any questions we had. As we were leaving, we thought of another question and asked the lady that came into our patient room. She quickly answered as she left the room and I had to follow her to finishing asking my questions. She didn’t seem to want to be bothered. You would think they were really busy by how we were treated but the fact is that we were the ONLY ones there. I would go back but only because it is the only urgent care near us. If you have one closer, I would go there.

This is a place I’ll definitely be bringing my whole family to. This place was CLEAN, the staff was very PROFESSIONAL , and so nice. They were so considerate of my little momma being so sick 😷. I’m so very thankful 🥲 bc in a week and a half I took my mom to three different ones and left bc of the mannerisms of the faculty I understand that our medical staff in our country is overworked and under paid but there’s no reason to take it out on sick people coming into your building! The staff at the Broadway Urgent Care are not like that. Please keep this going. Love the Solv !

I have so much to say about my experience this evening. This was our first visit here. Being a parent with a sick child is so stressful in itself. Dealing with all the technicalities of getting them scheduled, seen, treated and insure that they are receiving quality care always make this situation even more exhausting. The staff at Urgent Care for Children, Chattanooga completely irradiated all my added stress and anxieties tonight. From the online scheduling, to Robin welcoming us so warmly the moment we crossed the threshold. It was a late Friday evening which normally adds to the stress of assuring your child’s needs are met before options for care are limited and pharmacies are closing. We walked into the lobby and it felt like a warm hug. The facilities were immaculate. The medical staff quickly brought us back and listened intently to all of my concerns and made my daughter at ease immediately. After a throat swab not only my daughter but my very tired son who had to join is, got popsicles while we waited. Dr Pierce was so kind and very attentive. She payed such close attention to detail and was wonderful with my daughter. She was very knowledgeable about the issues we were having and validated all of my concerns. I then did the unthinkable!!! I waited five minutes and was able to have her prescription filled there. No driving to a second location, dragging a very tired 7 year old boy, and very uncomfortable 5 year old back out into the car to travel however far on a Friday night, only to drag them into another facility to WAIT for a prescription to be ready. I walked out into the parking lot and administered her first dose of antibiotics. She literally was checked in, evaluated, had labs, checked out and began treatment is 35 minutes. I can not say enough about my experience tonight.

Two days into my vacation, I wake up & every breath I take gives me a sharp pain in my left lung. I am a bit scared, have no idea where to go , a local barista suggested AFC Urgent care in Sevierville. I could not thank her enough! Then I experienced great care & a prompt diagnosis . The health news I received wasn’t good, but with meds I would recover & be able to make the 2 day drive back home & follow up with my primary. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I felt welcomed immediately, some tests were done to find out what was going on with me, & the doctor was direct in telling me my diagnosis. Assured me they would be there again if I didn’t feel better before I went home. My nerves calmed down & I was able to concentrate on getting better. Great staff in my eyes, would highly recommend to anyone in need of a clinic. Keep it up guys!

I was a sick walk in today, arrived and checked in at 915am and was there close to 4 hours! As I requested a covid test, I was asked to wait in my car and waited there for 2 hours. The provider, Dr. Campbell, spent all of 5 mins with me, ordered a CXR, had that done and waited some more. By the time I chose to leave, I had been there 3 hrs and 45 mins! I’ve been to the clinic before and never had to wait like this. When you’re sick, waiting almost 4 hours feels like an eternity. I feel bad for the provider and staff to be that booked up and overloaded. They need additional hands, MA’s and providers! Such a shame, but don’t think I’ll ever walk in again. Apparently, I should have made an appointment even though it’s an urgent care walk in clinic.

This is our go to Urgent Care for several years now and have always had great experience, however this visit left me completely puzzled… my daughter had injured her hand, from pinky to wrist, no fracture was found however it was recommended to wrap it for stability for now. The physician wrapped her arm from wrist to elbow with an ace bandage instead of protecting her pinky and hand. I spoke up because I have been trained to wrap and cast. We moved to a different room where she proceeded to make a wrist splint and wrapped my daughters hand and arm leaving my daughter unable to move her fingers or her thumb… how can a physician not know how to properly splint and wrap an injury… (I rewrapped after we left supporting her pinky and wrist) This is not the first time we have gone there with injuries like this, however this is the first time I have experienced a physician unable to do this, and I worked in urgent care for 5+ years

This is the fastest urgent care I have ever been to with my child! The front desk staff was professional and very insightful and informative when I had any questions in regards to my insurance and the services that the facility offered and how much it was gonna cost me in the long run. The doctor was great he listen to everything that was going on examined my child and he gave me my options to treat him. My wait time was about 20 or 30 minutes opposed to the 3 to 4 hours I would have spent at the children’s emergency hospital. I booked with Solv and pre-filled out everything and it made the check in process so much easier!

I had a painful left eye with drainage .
She looked at the eye said it was either bacterial or viral as I did not have trauma to the eye. She did not use eye dye or put me on the table . She prescribed an antibiotic ( ciprofloxacin) eye drops. The eye continued to have pain, drainage sensitivity to light. I contacted my eye doctor who saw me 5 days after Urgent Care. I was diagnosed with HSV 1 of the eye. He immediately prescribed antiviral meds (by mouth and eyedrops)… I wish Urgent Care could’ve diagnosed correctly as to diminish suffering and follow up with eye doctor. I should’ve just made appt with eye Dr. initially.
Thank you.

I have been going to this place for years and have NEVER had a bad experience!! I even drove across town to come here specifically today. Dr. Chris Keese is one of the finest doctors I have met. He has always been extremely kind and does great at meeting what I need. The front desk always meets you with a smile, and The nursing staff is so very sweet. I have had some rough days When I’ve been there and some of the nurses made me leave with a smile and they didn’t even know it. I highly recommend going to this urgent care if you plan on having a great experience. They are always fast and efficient. I was in and out within 20 minutes today. You definitely won’t wanna go anywhere else after. 👍

Wow – truly blown away by the kindness and politeness of the receptionists/office staff and doctors here. It is Christmas Eve and there is so much sickness going around, we are still in the midst of the Covid pandemic, etc… even with all of that said and these healthcare professionals surely missing their loved ones at home, they had positive attitudes, smiles, and great care-taking. The doctor we saw listened to our concerns and we are so appreciative of her time! Her plan of care was exceptional and gave us the reassurance we needed. I will highly recommend this clinic/urgent care. Even on our way out, the ladies up front were so kind to wish us a Merry Christmas. 🎄 6 out of 5 stars!!!!! 🌟🌟🌟

I started getting sick yesterday evening & I needed a place that opened early on a Sunday to be seen due to having a small child & my job. Maggie was wonderful! She was attentive to all my complaints & she did thorough testing on me. The front desk girl was nice as well. She told me if I needed anything as I was leaving to please call them & let them know. I had only seen this clinic driving by but never been here before. When searching for urgent cares open at 8 they popped up. I was able to easily make an appointment online & do all my paperwork as well. Such an easy, smooth & wonderful visit. Will definitely be back & have already recommended to other people. Thank you!

I truly appreciate this urgent care in Ooltewah. It is a convenient access to immediate healthcare. The wait was longer than expected but they provide a great phone app with real-time tracking for your wait time.
EJ, one of the nurse practitioners was excellent. She took the time to listen, answer questions and explain without making me feel like I was just another patient, which is important to me. The nurses and techs were friendly. The faculty was clean.
My only complaint is that the iPad that is used for signing in, with a finger, should always be wiped clean after each patient—they didn’t do that after each person while I was there).
I recommend this urgent care if you do not need to go to the ER.

I had just enough symptoms to make me want to get a Rapid Covid 19 test. The receptionist was friendly and kind. Per protocol, I waited in the car until it was time to be seen. My nurse Madison was cheerful and caring. She was very gentle during the Covid procedure. I then saw Ashley Still, NP. We talked about my symptoms and she looked in my ears and throat and then listened to my chest. When the Covid results returned, she explained the CDC recommended instructions and made sure I understood why I should still self-quarantine for 10 days from the onset of symptoms.
Everyone at AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah is so kind yet professional. That is why I continue to return there if I need their help.

I have been extremely sick for four days now and I have been here several times and I always had a great experience but this time they did not offer to take my temperature or check my oxygen all they did was take my blood pressure The doctor did listen to my breathing and then they give me a shot and the doctor told me he was going to give me some medicine they did not do an x-ray on my chest which is extremely congested and feels like I have a horse on top of me it was late when I got there and I understand they were tired and ready to go home but still yet when a sick person comes in you would think they would take care of them as they would if it was in the morning. I was very disappointed and I am still very sick and will probably end up having to go to the hospital maybe that’s where I should’ve went to begin with but I will not use Sevierville Hospital so I have to go to Knoxville and I have no energy and really don’t know that I want to make that drive by myself. I know you can call an ambulance but I don’t feel like this is an emergency but if my breathing does not get better maybe it will be. I just feel like they could have done more as far as check me out instead of just giving me a shot and a Z pack and prednisone and sent me home. I really just feel like they should’ve checked my oxygen they should’ve checked my temperature and they should’ve at least done a chest x-ray I was just very disappointed this time. I recommend them because it is always been a good place but I’m trying to just make it out as the fact that they close at eight and I got there at seven so they were ready to go home. I tested negative for Covid but not that I want that Q-tip shoved up in my nose but I really don’t think they are testing right because it just barely went up in my nose. I feel like they should do a different type of Covid test if they don’t know how to put the Q-tip in the nasal and actually get a good swab. Just makes me wonder do I have Covid and have I exposed others so I am being very safe at home and staying away from everyone because I am so sick I have no energy and I really can’t drive right now. And I don’t really have anyone to help me because everyone has a life and it’s kind of hard to ask them to stop what they’re doing to take me to the doctor that may take hours you never know. I just thought that urgent care was my best bet because it has always been in the past this time I really just feel like they were done with the day and wanted out of there. If I’m not better in a few days I’m going to have to go to the hospital and I don’t want to. Then I will be exposed to all those germs that has been brought in there. I have a very low immune system and catch everything and anything so I’m scared to go to the hospital but at the same time if I get worse or do not get better I’m going to have to when I really feel like the urgent care could’ve helped me better than they did.

This was by far the best experience I’ve ever had at a medical provider’s office, but even more so at a pediatrician’s office. The wait time was minimal, the check-in process being digital on your phone was super convenient. I would absolutely recommend anyone with children use this urgent Care. The provider and staff was phenomenal with my daughter. Their main priority was to make sure that she was comfortable. Once her favorite broke and she was ready to play the nursing staff actually played with her, which absolutely stood out to me. She needed some testing that required a urine sample and once again their top priority was to make sure that she was comfortable.
I’d also like to make a special note that in a world with covid, if someone has a fever or is showing any signs of covid people seem to shy away or change their demeanor, ever not one single staff member did in our case. Though she was negative for covid, it was nice to see that they still treated everyone equally. Thank you for that.

This was our first experience and it was great. We will most definitely return. All the staff and the Dr. were very friendly and made my daughter feel very comfortable. We were checked in and to a room within 5 min. We were a walk in so this is Something u are very thankful for when ur little one does not feel well. My daughter ask if we could come back anytime she needs to go to the dr as soon as we got in the car, she loved that she got a popcycle, stickers and a sucker! I Would most definitely recommend anyone who needs care for there little one to go here, very impressed with the concern from all the cleanliness of the facility and the timelines of the visit. And a plus, I saw where they will fill ur meds there so u do not have to make a trip to the pharmacy afterwards another plus!! Feel
Very blessed to have this urgent care in Hixson.

My daughter was very sick with croup and was very irritable. I made an appointment to be seen and as soon as I was checked in, we were called to the back. The doctor came in within 10 minutes and knew exactly what is was and what we needed to do to help my daughter breathe better. The nurse was very patient with my daughter, even with her screaming and pushing away from her. We were there for a few hours due to a breathing treatment, but everyone kept checking in on us and my daughter was able to get some sleep as well. I would definitely recommend this facility if you need urgent care or after hours on a weekend!

Very satisfied on this our 2nd visit to your Urgent Care & just as pleased, satisfied & thankful for the care/attention we received this time as the first!!! Even though we got there toward the end of their day & they were still very busy, we didn’t feel like we were getting just “rushed through ” to get out!!! The sweet girl up front & the tech came out to the car & helped me get my husband out as he had gout in both feet & couldn’t walk & they also helped him back in the car!! I really appreciated that!!! The NP seemed likewise very caring & knowledgeable while still listening to our concerns/my husband’s history/etc. !! If we need any of the services they offer again, even though I hope it’s a while off, you know, we will DEFINITELY return there!! Please thank them again for us!! Thank you all for the care & opportunity to express our view on our experience !!

I am a resident of Canada and was on my way home from a Florida vacation when I suddenly needed medical attention. AFC Urgent Care was recommended by the nearby hotel I had spent the night at. Reception staff were very patient as I spent 45 minutes on their phone trying to have the visit approved by a very uncooperative and rude Canadian Medical Insurance Representative. Thank you for your patience which meant everything to me. The Doctor who attended to my needs was very thorough and explained the prescribed medications and why they were chosen for me. It has been 48 hours since my visit and I am well under way to recovery. Thank you all. And as they say in the South…”Y’all have a Blessed Day.”

This Urgent Care was absolutely the cleanest, friendliness and easiest to get in and out for me. I would rather go to an Urgent Care any day than an ER unless you know you need that type of medical intervention( you know you will be admitted). This is where you know you can go to when you need to be seen that day and can be treated with an antibiotic or other treatment. It’s a large and very clean facility and the entire staff was very friendly and thoughtful. I saw Dr. Ballard and she was very nice and helpful. This is where I will go to whenever I need to be seen! I am 100% satisfied with my experience and I highly recommend them if you need to go to an urgent care facility.

Urgent Care in Munford
Urgent care is Munford’s best option for quality medical care when you need it, offering walk-in appointments during extended hours and on weekends. Solv even has clinic partners in the Munford-area that offer online scheduling, allowing you to book a visit convenient to your schedule and skip the wait.
Walk-in clinics provide a convenient, fast alternative to emergency rooms—even primary care providers—treating minor injuries and illnesses including strep throat, infections, cold and flu symptoms, allergies, rashes, burns, bites, and more. Additionally, most offer preventative care including annual well exams, lab testing, and vaccinations.
When you’re in need of medical care for a non-life threatening condition, trust the urgent care providers nearby. And whenever possible, make it easier by scheduling and managing your visit with Solv.
Urgent Care Guide
In a recent survey conducted with the Urgent Care Association, Solv found that patients were waiting an average of 24 days for appointments with their primary care provider. In a world of instant gratification, consumers demand more. They demand now. If you want to watch a movie, you download it in minutes or stream it instantly. If you need groceries, you can pick up your phone and have them delivered to you within the hour. If you need restaurant reservations, you find one with availability, book online, walk in minutes later and sit right down. Healthcare shouldn’t be any different.
That’s why urgent care has been growing at a faster pace than any other healthcare service in the United States. And it is why healthcare consumers search for “urgent care” more than 5x more than “primary care” or “family doctor,” combined. These consumers are highly actionable, searching with high intent terms like “urgent care near me.” They want same day access to quality healthcare providers when they are sick or injured – after hours, one weekends and on holidays – without the cost and inconvenience of the emergency room.
Urgent care centers typically treat minor illnesses like the flu, sinus infections and strep throat, as well as injuries like bone fractures and sprains, cuts, scrapes and burns, making these clinics ideal for diagnosing and treating non-emergent healthcare needs. And at a growing rate urgent care clinics are offering preventative care services including annual physicals and well visits, flu shots and other immunizations and vaccines, taking on the role of primary care provider for the tens of millions of consumers that don’t have one.
For kids there are special pediatric urgent care centers, usually open after hours for patients between the ages of 1 and 18.
Urgent Care Services & Pricing
Urgent care centers, which are part of the walk-in clinic healthcare category, are a convenient resource for consumers needing treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. Services that you would normally receive at your primary care office are usually available at an urgent care including annual and school physicals, flu shots and immunizations, treatment for illnesses including colds, flu stomach pains, sinus and ear infections and more. You can also be seen for injuries such as burns, bites, sprains and breaks – things that you might first thing to go to the emergency room vs urgent care, but you’ll have a shorter wait and smaller bill at the urgent care. As for cost, without insurance, you should expect between $100-140 for your visit, plus the cost of any labs, tests or images. With insurance, urgent care will be similar to seeing a specialist with applicable co-pay.

Insurance & Payments
Nearly all urgent care centers take commercial insurance and many (if not most) will take medicare. As such if you have insurance coverage, you can expect the financial experience to be similar to visiting a specialist where you have a co-pay, usually $35-50, due at the time of the visit. Any additional lab work, x-rays or other tests performed will be billed against your insurance first and any supplemental balance due will be invoiced to you after the fact. Without insurance, you’ll pay a visit fee between $100-140 at the time of your visit. This is typically 25-50% more than your primary care provider, but usually the convenience is well worth the additional cost. If you are interested in a telehealth or video visit, your cost could be as much as 50% less than an urgent care, you could be diagnosed and prescribed medication and you’ll never have to leave your home.

Urgent Care Hours & Wait Times
Every urgent care center – even those part of the same group or brand – may have different hours. While they are meant to be conveniently accessible during times when your primary care provider is not, that’s subjective and highly variable. A traditional formula, however, is that an urgent care is open 6 to 7 days a week usually between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm. That could shift to nearly any 8-12 hour period between 7 am and 10 pm. You’ll even find some clinics open 24 hours a day, similar to an emergency room. As for wait time, most patients report waiting between 15-45 minutes on average, but that can certainly vary, as well. It’s usually best to find an urgent care near you to either confirm the hours online, or call the clinic directly to verify. Or, you can book a same day doctor appointment online with Solv.

Cost of Living in Munford, Tennessee – 24/7 Wall St.
Cost of Living in Munford, Tennessee
Munford is a city in Tipton County, Tennessee, with a population of 5,998. The total cost of housing, food, child care, transportation, health care, taxes, and other necessities for a single adult in Munford is $34,409 a year — about the same as the annual cost of living for Tennessee of $34,350 yet less than the national figure of $38,433.
Using cost of living data from the nonprofift think tank Economic Policy Institute, 24/7 Wall St. estimated the cost of living in Munford and over 29,000 other cities and towns in the US.
Housing Costs in Munford, Tennessee
Housing is one of the largest components of cost of living. In Munford, the median home value is $155,200, less than the national median home value of $204,900.
Renting is a sometimes lower cost alternative to homeownership. In Munford, some 29.50% of occupied homes are rented, less than the 36.2% national renter rate. The typical renter in Munford spends $850 a month on housing, less than the $1,023 national median monthly rent.
In addition to home value, one of the largest determinants of housing affordability is area income. While nationwide the price of a typical U.S. home is 3.4 times the $60,293 U.S. median household income, housing affordability ratios range from approximately 1.0 in the least expensive cities to more than 10.0 in the country’s most expensive markets. In Munford, the median household income is $73,364, 2.1 times the median home value.
Transportation Costs in Munford, Tennessee
Transportation can also be a significant component of cost of living. In Munford, 97.50% of commuters drive to work, compared to 85.5% of commuters nationwide. An estimated 84.90% of workers commute to jobs outside of Munford, a larger share than the 43.7% share of commuters nationwide who live and work in different cities. The average commute in Munford is 31.1 minutes long, compared to the 26.6-minute average commute nationwide. Taking into account the cost of gas, as well as public transit and car maintenance, the EPI estimates that a single person in Munford spends $11,066 a year on transportation, more than the national average of $9,760.
Health Care Costs in Munford, Tennessee
Out-of-pocket health care costs and insurance premiums — assuming at least a basic level of health insurance coverage — are slightly higher than they are on average nationwide in Munford but below what they are across Tennessee as a whole.
For a single adult living in the area, average health care costs come out to $4,568 per year, compared to an average of $4,925 across Tennessee and $4,266 nationwide.
Child care Costs in Munford, Tennessee
For families with children, child care adds thousands of dollars to overall annual spending. In Munford, the average annual cost of child care for two children — one 4 year old and one 8 year old — is $10,650, about $300 less than the comparable average of $10,907 across all of Tennessee. Meanwhile, across the U.S. as a whole, childcare expenses for two children averages $15,853 per year.
Food Costs in Munford, Tennessee
Food is another every day expense that has a significant impact on overall cost of living. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that the cost of food varies from city to city and town to town.
In Munford, a single adult spends an average of $3,311 on food annually, and a family of four spends $9,562 on average. For context, average annual food expenditure across Tennessee and the U.S., respectively, are $3,214 and $3,240 for a single adult, and $9,282 and $9,354 for a family of four. These estimates are calculated for a nutritionally adequate diet of food purchased at a grocery store for at-home preparation.
Taxes in Munford, Tennessee
Few expenses vary as much from city to city and town to town as taxes. Accounting for state and federal income taxes, as well as Social Security contributions and Medicare payroll taxes, the average adult working in Munford, Tennessee pays $4,938 annually — closely in line with the statewide average of $4,925.
It is important to note that these calculations do not include other common taxes such as property, sales, and excise taxes. Accounting for these taxes, while excluding taxes levied at the federal level, Munford residents live in a state with a low average tax burden. Per capita state tax collections in Tennessee total $2,108 per year, compared to the $3,151 average across all states.
Methodology
To estimate the cost of housing, food, transportation, health care, child care, taxes, and other necessities, 24/7 Wall St. assigned county-level Economic Policy Institute data to cities, towns, villages and Census-designated places based on boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau. For places that span multiple counties, data was aggregated based on the percentage of boundary overlap.

in Virginia to slave Judith Good and a white man. She met another slave, Albert Royal Brooks, and taught him to read and write so they could write passes to see each other. When her owner died in 1838, she became the property of a man named Sublette. That same year, she joined the First Baptist Church of Richmond. Shortly after Goode became Sublett’s property, he allowed her to marry Brooks on February 2, 1839, and allowed them to live together. Albert’s owner allowed him to run a livery stable for which he collected rent, but also allowed Albert to keep his extra earnings and use them to buy his freedom. In 1841, when the Baptist Church split, she was one of those who united to form the First African Baptist Church. [2]
Career
When Sublette died in 1858, his heirs threatened to sell Lucy and her children to different masters. She could negotiate with traffickers who bought her children and let them live with her as long as they came to work every day. The only exception was a daughter who was sold to owners in Tennessee. [3] The knowledge that they could be separated made the Brookses work hard to try and buy the freedom of Lucy and the children. Her new master, Daniel von Groning, who also owned her three younger boys, allowed Albert to pay for their freedom in installments. It took four years, but on October 21, 1862, the leave was signed. The three older boys were not released until the civil war was over. [2]
The loss of a daughter and a previous son who was sold as an infant prompted Brooks to try to help children separated from their parents after the end of the war. [3] The Freedmen’s Bureau initially offered temporary rations and care for abandoned children, but by the fall of 1865 increasingly attempted to shift the burden to local relief efforts and charitable societies. [4] Brooks, who was the leader of a women’s sewing circle for charity work, convinced other women to help start the orphanage. [2] She then received the support of several churches, including the local Quaker congregation, to help found the Friends Orphanage for Colored Orphans. [3] The plan was approved and the location of the building was approved by the city council in 1867, and an orphanage opened two years later. [5] The organization still operates and operates as the Children’s Friends Association, [6] although it is currently focused on providing childcare and family support services to low to moderate income families. [7]
Brooks died October 7, 1900 in Richmond, Virginia [8] and she was buried in the mechanics’ cemetery in Richmond. [1] In 2008, she was designated a Virginia Historic Landmark at the corner of Charity and St. Paul streets. [9] A book about her life was published in 1989. [10]

biography
Barrett was born Katherine Harwood Waller at her family’s historic estate, Clifton, in Widewater, Virginia, to Ann Eliza Stribble Waller and Withers Waller on January 24, 1857. slaves on several large plantations, and Barrett’s two young black girlfriends named Jane and Lucy were “gifted” to young Kate on her sixth birthday by her grandmother. Later, regretting these circumstances, Barrett stated, “I looked upon them as my own by ‘divine right’, and many of them were lessons in cruelty and misunderstanding of the rights of others that had been instilled in me.” [3] [4] [5]
Acquia Church in Stafford, Virginia was the first and last assignment of the Rev. Dr. Robert South Barrett. He and Keith Waller Barrett are buried in his cemetery.
Katherine Waller attended the Arlington Girls’ Institute in Alexandria, Virginia, after the Civil War. On July 19, 1876, she married Robert South Barrett (1851–1896), a young man. An episcopal minister fresh out of seminary who has recently been assigned to the nearby Aquia Church. [6] [7] It was while traveling with her husband and helping with his work in Virginia, Kentucky and Georgia that she first witnessed the social problems that would fuel her life’s work. [1]
Specifically, shortly after Robert South Barrett, Jr., the first of their six children, was born in Richmond, Virginia, a young single woman with a child of her own begged for help at their door. The Barretts fed the young woman and listened to her tell that they had been abandoned by a man who promised marriage. Barrett recognized the similarities between himself and the young woman and concluded that only luck separated her from the young woman in her home; one of them fell in love with a “good” person, and the other with a “bad” one. In addition, through her own experience as a slave owner and with the laws of Jim Crow, Barrett also learned how degradation can break the spirit. [8] Deeply moved by her newfound bond with this “fallen” woman, she vowed, “By the power of the God who rules the universe, I will spend my life trying to erase some of the inequalities my sisters were subjected to, who were so helpless to help yourself.” [9] [10]
Doctor, mother, widow
When Reverend Barrett was sent to Atlanta in 1886, Katherine Barrett, with his support, received her medical degree and also founded what became her first shelter for unmarried mothers. The Women’s Medical College of Georgia awarded Barrett her MD in 1892nd year and a doctorate in 1894. Barrett never intended to practice medicine, but wanted to establish her own credibility: “she admitted that the initials were ‘M.D.’.” behind her name gave weight to her point of view.” began to deteriorate and they returned to the Alexandria area when he was assigned to Washington, D.C. and then traveled to Europe in search of treatment. Thus, Barrett also studied nursing at the Florence Nightingale Training School in London, England. However Reverend Barrett died in 1896 years old, leaving his 39-year-old widow with six young children. [12]

Charles Nelson Crittenton and Dr. Kate Waller Barrett collaborated for 16 years.
Barrett’s main interest was the situation of unmarried mothers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a group that suffered from national prejudice. After starting a “life-saving house” in Atlanta on her own, despite official opposition from the local government, she joined forces with Charles Nelson Crittenton (1833–1909), a wealthy New Yorker who is also interested in creating havens for “fallen women”. [1]
Crittenton established lifeguard shelters primarily focused on providing women with an alternative to prostitution. He founded the first in New York in 1883 after the death of his beloved four-year-old daughter Florence, after whom he named them. [13] He founded others in California and later with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in various parts of the US. However, he confided to Barrett that he feared that the isolated houses would collapse after a period of initial enthusiasm. [14] [15]
When Barrett’s husband moved the family back to Alexandria, Virginia, she was relieved of her day-to-day work at the Atlanta rescue home and systematically continued Crittenton’s idea of a national homeowners association. In 1895 they founded the Crittenton National Mission of Florence, with Crittenton as President and Barrett as Vice President. After her husband’s death on September 12, 1896, Crittenton added to Barrett’s duties as general superintendent, which she performed as a single mother of six children. Barrett successfully secured the NFCM’s first-ever federal charter for a charity through a special act of Congress signed by the president. William McKinley 9April 1898 [16] [17]
After his death, she succeeded Crittenton as president in 1909, but retained her role as Chief Superintendent as well, serving in both positions until her death on February 23, 1925. At the time of her reign, she managed more than 70 homes throughout the country and abroad. one-third of all maternity hospitals in the US were associated with the Florence Crittenton network. [18] [19]
Accent shift
Although Charles Crittenton emphasized saving prostitutes, he agreed with Barrett that unmarried mothers and their children were important. Under Barrett’s influence, the focus gradually shifted to prioritizing unmarried mothers, with a secondary focus on prostitutes. [20]
Barrett was instrumental in helping single mothers become eligible charitable targets. She successfully defended her views on social reform, making a number of public speeches and publishing a number of articles about the plight of an unmarried mother. [18]
Although the NFCM shifted its focus from prostitution to unmarried mothers, Barrett led it decisively when a panic against prostitution under the label of “white slavery” surfaced around 1910. “When many in the United States were caught up in the hysteria of white slavery, Barrett and the NFCM insisted on helping the victims of prostitution rather than punishing them as perpetrators … NFCM public statements denounced attempts to pin the blame for prostitution solely on women.” [21]
Race and class in Florence houses Crittenton
Entrance to Crittenton Florence House Charleston, SC
For a woman born into a slave family, Barrett made significant efforts to address the racial issues inherent in NFCM work. Noting Barrett’s past and how her era was consistent with the institutionalization of Jim Crow, historian Katherine J. Aiken concludes that “[in] this context, the NFCM took pioneering steps for the African-American community.” [4] Aiken notes that under Barrett, the NFCM was on a “colored mission” in Alexandria, Virginia, with not only his cellmates but all of his staff being black. [22] Similarly, the NFCM welcomed Topeka Home (Colored), founded by the Topeka Blacks in 1904 when they later petitioned to join the NFCM. Barrett not only took over the Topeka house, but also arranged for the NFCM to pay off the house’s significant remaining mortgage and ensured that its leader, Sarah Malone, was included in the leadership of the NFCM. [23]
Barrett forged important relationships with African American women… At a time when several white organizations were engaging with black women, Barrett helped middle-class African American women participate in rescue operations and maternity hospital work. .. neither the revolutionaries nor the radicals, and both the white and black workers of Crittenton, were able to resist or challenge the prevailing views on race. At the same time, Crittenton has taken steps to combat racism that deserves recognition. [21]
Perhaps Barrett was less successful in guiding Florence Crittenton’s workers with regard to the class divisions that permeated their work. While unmarried mothers were hardly limited to the working class, middle-class and wealthy women had access to resources that could protect them from stigma. [24] As a result, Florence Crittenton’s work has been characterized as largely middle-class, “intervening” in the life of the working class, “seeking to create a well-ordered society.” Kathryn Aiken believes that this characterization is too broad and that it lacks the sincere care that Florence Crittenton’s workers show for their work, identifying themselves as women and mothers with their sisters “unfortunate girls”. [25] Aiken summarizes his findings by agreeing with critics that “middle-class Crittenton workers sometimes imposed their values and lifestyles on women of another class … [and][] these actions sometimes had negative consequences for the women involved.” However, the houses in Crittenton served their purpose and filled the void by providing a real service to women going through significant personal upheaval.” [26]
Maternity Hospitals
The abandoned Florence Crittenton Maternity Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa was built in 1913 next to the home of Florence Crittenton with the latest technology.
Considering the unsatisfactory treatment of women in regular hospitals, many houses in Florence Crittenton built their own houses. For example, Florence Crittenton’s home in Sioux City, Iowa included hospital care in its original 1906 building and then built an entire hospital next door in 1913. Like most hospitals in Crittenton, it was staffed primarily by women, and all women (not just the residents of the houses) could use it. The fees levied on middle-class patients helped pay for the care of the residents of the home. “This combination of modern amenities, responsive care and an atmosphere that promoted women being in control of their own care led many women to choose Crittenton Hospitals over other alternatives and likely hastened the transition from home birth to hospital birth in some places. . ” [27] [28]
Children as heirs
Two of Barrett’s children led the Florence Crittenton National Mission in her wake. With duties divided in the same way that Charles Crittenton and she had operated in the beginning, her eldest son, Robert South Barrett, Jr. (the little boy she once mentally compared to a single mother’s child at the door all those years ago) served as her successor in office. President of the NFCM, and daughter Reba Barrett Smith served as Vice President and General Superintendent. [29]
Other occupations
Political activism
Katherine Barrett was a founding member and vice president of the League of Women Voters, and the driving force behind the creation of the Auxiliary American Legion. Barrett also held offices in a number of political organizations including:
- Vice President Equal Suffrage League of Virginia (1909-1920)
- President National Council of Women (1911-1916)
- First President of Virginia, Auxiliary American Legion
- President, Auxiliary American Legion (1922–1923)
- Vice President of the Virginia Conference of Charities and Correctional Institutions
She was also active in the National Congress of Mothers, Parents and Teachers Association, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, King’s Daughters, Episcopal church, the National League for Human Services, and the Boot Camp Operations Commission.
After her speech at the Democratic National Convention was met with a standing ovation, she was asked to consider running for governor of Virginia. She is flattered, but did not follow through with the idea due to declining health.
Delegation
Barrett was authorized to be a delegate for many reasons, both social and political. In 1914, Barrett traveled to Europe on the US battleship, where she was:
- Special Representative of the US Government in Europe studies and advises on women’s issues for the Bureau of Immigration, 1914-1919
- One of 10 women who attended the Versailles Conference in 1919.
- Delegate of the Zurich Peace Conference 1919
Back in the United States, she was:
- Delegate 1924 Democratic National Convention
- Delegate to the Juvenile Delinquent Care Conference
- Delegate, International Council of Women
Daughter of the American Revolution and
resident of Virginia About 30 years before her death, Barrett knew that she lived in the house where Richard Bland Lee drafted the deed establishing the District of Columbia. It belonged to Elisha K. Dick, one of George Washington’s physicians on his deathbed, as well as a prominent abolitionist and early mayor of Alexandria. [30]
Barrett joined the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1904 as a member of the Mount Vernon chapter. In 1919, she was elected Regent of the Virginia Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a position she held until her death.
On February 21, 1925, Barrett held an organizational meeting at her home for the Alexandria/Arlington chapter. Following Barrett’s unexpected death two days later, the new chapter changed its name to the Kate Waller Barrett chapter in her honor. [1]
Barrett has been active in the preservation or improvement of several other local historic buildings and sites, including Arlington National Cemetery, and the Custis-Lee Mansion, home of Robert E. Lee. Barrett also campaigned for the creation of the Shenandoah National Park. [18] So, a branch of the Alexandria Public Library, which keeps a collection of local lore (since 1937), is named in her honor.
Honors
When Barrett died on February 23, 1925, the flag was half flown at the Virginia Capitol in Richmond. She was the first woman in Commonwealth history to be so honoured. In 2006, the Library of Virginia honored Barrett as one of the Women of Virginia in History. [31]
Barrett served on the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and was the first woman to be made an honorary member of their Phi Beta Kappa chapter. A hostel is also named after her. [32]
In Virginia, three establishments are named after it:
- Kate Waller Barrett Primary School of District Stafford [33]
- Kate Waller County County [34]
- KEETELLL Library in Alexandria [35]
Legacy
Barrett was a major influence in the development of social work and services for women and children.
Under her leadership, NFCM has grown into a recognized social service organization providing women with a wide range of services. The Mission initiated activities that are now considered by many to be essential services for women and children. The Florence Crittenton Houses were pioneers in women-friendly policies in the areas of health care, women’s employment, and children’s rights. The organization campaigned for women’s equality and the recognition of women’s needs… Despite differences in class and race with most of its clients, FC volunteers attempted to emphasize gender identity… It would be a long time before a group of women had the resources to duplicate Crittenton’s efforts. [36]
By insisting that all mothers have something to say and a right to act, Barrett also successfully encouraged large numbers of women to push the boundaries of what was acceptable to women. Historian Katherine Aiken considers Barrett’s current relatively small profile to be of great interest. “One of the most prominent women of her time, Kate Waller Barrett is a virtually unknown historical figure today.” Aiken notes that popular culture and historians have focused on female activists and sociologists, “who tended to be single professional women. Undoubtedly, as a doctor and nurse, Barrett’s professional status was on par with any progressive reformer, male or female. However, unlike many of her contemporaries, Barrett relied on her role as wife and mother to establish her reputation…Recent research on motherhood has clearly shown that middle-class women often used the rhetoric of motherhood to force their way towards achieving favorable change. women. Barrett and NFCM exemplify this phenomenon.” 9 “Working on Your Destiny – Famous Women of Virginia – Janie Barrett”. virginia.gov . Retrieved September 9, 2015.

In 2011, a grand jury indicted Sandusky on 40 counts of sex crimes against boys. Sandusky first approached potential victims through his Second Mile organization. The victims were fatherless boys who lived at home when they were between 8 and 12 years old. He then participated in extra touches in the locker room. At least 20 incidents allegedly occurred while Sandusky was still working in Pennsylvania.
In 2002, assistant coach Mike McQueary said he came across Sandusky, who anally raped a ten-year-old boy. The next day, he reported the incident to head coach Joe Paterno, who told him, “You did what you had to.” Pater did not inform athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz. At the preliminary hearing, McQuears testified that he “believed” that Sandusky had “some type of sexual intercourse” with the boy. He said it was based on the “positioning” of Sandusky and the boy, but he wasn’t “100 percent sure”0006

McQuirey testified that he told Pennsylvania State officials in “graphic detail” about what he saw in the changing room showers. He described the activity as “extremely sexy and I thought there was some kind of intercourse going on.”
McQuery testified that he described the act as “extremely sexual and I thought there was some kind of intercourse going on.” Sandusky decided to withdraw from his preliminary hearing, which took place in mid-December 2011. Sandusky was released on $250,000 bail and placed under house arrest. while he was awaiting trial. The additional victims were members of the Sandusky youth program and were between 10 and 12 years old at the time of the sexual assault. The charges against Sandusky include involuntary perversion of sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, and indecent assault.
Jerry Sandusky Trial
The trial began June 11, 2012 at the Center County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania for 52 counts of child sexual abuse. The trial lasted 8 days. Eight witnesses stated that they were sexually assaulted by Sandusky. The jury heard testimonies of attacks on two other victims, who were never named. Each of the eight people who testified explained that they encountered Sandusky through the Second Mile organization. Their individual accounts have been active since mid-1990s to 2009.

Sandusky’s lawyers argued that the prosecutors were motivated by financial considerations. The defense diagnosed Sandusky with theatrical personality disorder. Matt Sandusky, one of Sandusky’s six adopted children, said he was also the victim of sexual abuse by a former coach. He could have testified in favor of the prosecution, but he did not. Jerry Sandusky had every intention of testifying in his own defense, but refused to do so, as he argued that the prosecution would have called him to the podium.
Jerry Sandusky’s sentence in prison
On June 22, 2012, the jury found Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 counts. Within two days the jury sat for 21 hours. Sandusky served 442 years in prison. The announcement of the verdict is scheduled for October 9.
Sandusky’s earliest release date is October 9, 2042, his 98th birthday. He will not be eligible for parole until he has been imprisoned for at least 30 years. In 1999 at the Outback Bowl in Tampa and at the Alamo Bowl at 19’99 in San Antonio, Sandusky could also potentially face criminal charges for molesting boys. In such cases, bringing charges against Sandusky himself would not be a double risk because they would not cross the line of control.
Jerry Sandusky Detention
On October 23, 2012, Sandusky was transferred for pre-trial testing at Camp Hill State Prison in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was then transferred to the Green State Penitentiary in Franklin Township, where on October 31, 2012, most of the life and death row inmates who have served their terms are being held. He was in custody.
Pittsburgh-based KDKA-TV reported on December 3, 2014 that Sandusky had received a letter from the University of Pennsylvania asking the football team to renew their season ticket plan and participate in a “recruitment” trip to a Penn State basketball game. The letter was reportedly sent by mistake.
In March 2017, Sandusky was transferred to SCI Somerset, a medium-security prison outside Somerset, Pennsylvania. As of May 2017, he is serving his sentence at SCI Laurel Highlands, a minimum security facility near Pittsburgh that caters primarily to sick or elderly inmates. Sandusky tried to have a new trial. Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus will speak on his behalf as an expert on repressed memory, as the testimony of several of Sandusky’s victims is allegedly based on repressed memories.
Jerry Sandusky, PA
The University of Pennsylvania has been the subject of significant media criticism as several staff members have ranged from university president to graduate student [who?]. ], covered Sandusky’s attacks. Maureen Dowd wrote of the scandal: “Unlike the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the Pennsylvania state hierarchy seemed to cover up pedophile crimes to protect their mark. In June 2012, Pennsylvania State University implemented a policy requiring all Pennsylvania employees working with children to report mandatory child abuse. The policy also requires all Penn State employees who work with children to complete background checks and receive training on child abuse and reporting requirements.
