Beauty treatments may not be the first remedy for a bad mood, but the story of two hairdressers in the United States managed to help a young girl suffering from depression, instantly caused thousands of responses in social networks.
A 20-year-old hairdressing intern in Waterloo, Iowa posted a story on Facebook last Tuesday about a schoolgirl who came into the salon with extremely tangled, unkempt hair.
Today, for the first time, I encountered a very difficult case – a 16-year-old girl came to me who had been suffering from severe depression for several years,” Kaylie wrote in her post, which was shared more than 55 thousand times.
The girl told Kaylee that her hands were shattered by the realization of her complete worthlessness, and she could not even comb her hair, the only thing she had the strength for was to go to the toilet.0011
However, she was due to take part in a group photo at school, and she asked the salon to cut off all her hair, because she could not imagine how these tangled tufts could be combed.
But Kaylee, along with her colleague Mariah Wenger – who, like Kayley, is studying to be a beautician – refused to cut her long hair that reached the girl’s waist.
“I just didn’t know how I could cut all her hair. I knew right away that we should leave her with as much hair as possible,” Kaylie told the BBC. “Shave would have been a last resort, but neither of us didn’t want that.”
And then both student interns began to untangle the girl’s hair and did it for 10 hours, spending two days on this client.

“It took a lot of words of encouragement and comfort and just plain conversation to distract her from this painful tangling of her hair and in general – to boost her self-confidence.
To me these mental health problems that have to overcome every single day, and the most not alien, because I had postpartum depression and anxiety,” admitted Mariah, who has two children.
“I know what it’s like to feel worthless; a child should never feel that. I knew right away that I needed to help her, just as other people had helped me. We all deserve to be feel beautiful,” Kaylee said.
Kayleigh and Mariah managed to untangle the girl’s shoulder-length hair, cut off the rest and styled it. “To be honest, we both had tears of joy. The last thing she [the client] said to me was, ‘I’m going to be smiling in my school photos today,'” Kaylie said.

“It happened to me too – I have bipolar disorder – and there was a moment when I also did not comb my hair and did not take care of myself – so remember, beauty, that you are not the only one,” wrote, for example, Sarah- Lee.
“I myself was in the same situation, and I can not express how comforting it is, and how important it is that the hairdresser is kind and understanding. I was also not condemned and returned to my hair its former beauty,” said Claire Macdonald.
“I’m constantly struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes it’s hard to just get out of bed, but I try to ward off everything bad. Plus you’re beautiful and not at all useless, that’s for sure,” wrote another woman.
“I’m so glad there are people who understand mental disorders… So thank you very much for taking this young lady with all your heart,” reads another comment.
Many also shared their thoughts on how beauty treatments and personal care can be important for people suffering from depression.
“Well done for realizing that this is a mental problem and that you helped her regain her self-confidence by fixing her hair,” Patricia Barron-Gondeiro wrote.
Hair metamorphosis in depression
Combing such tangled hair was impossible. The only salvation for this young girl was a sharp metamorphosis of the hairstyle.
Kaylee Olsson is a stylist from Waterloo, Iowa, USA. She recently admitted that she has not had such a difficult client in her entire career. This confirmed not only her skills as a hairdresser, but also her approach to people.
