The Beacon Health Options North Carolina Engagement Center (NCEC) in Morrisville, NC has been part of the delivery system since 1992 mental health and addiction services in North Carolina.
Since its inception, Beacon Health Options has provided usage management services based on our belief that the most effective treatment is one that meets the needs of the person served, is readily available, delivered by competent practitioners, and promotes family involvement where possible. . Treatment should be based on best practices in behavioral health care.
North Carolina Medicaid
Effective January 1, 2002, Beacon Health Options, Inc. entered into an agreement with the North Carolina Division of Medical Benefits to provide verification services for the use of more than 1.3 million Medicaid recipients in the state.
Effective April 1, 2013, Beacon Health Options, Inc. issues prior authorization for mental health and substance abuse services, except for exempt beneficiaries 1915(b)/(c).
Provider information about Medicaid can be found at www.ncdhhs.gov/dma/index.htm. Service definitions can be found at http://dma.ncdhhs.gov/document/behavioral-health-clinical-coverage-policies. Effective October 1, 2011, providers must submit authorization requests to Beacon Health Options electronically through the Beacon Health Options ProviderConnect web portal. Authorization requests submitted through means other than ProviderConnect on or after October 1, 2011 will be returned as “Unable to process”.
Providers are encouraged to provide any current clinical information to support the medical necessity of the request, in addition to the required documentation set forth by the North Carolina Division of Medical Benefits. Additional documentation may consist of child and family team notes, summary of care review, copies of tests/assessments, etc.

Psychological/neurological testing requests must be submitted under Outpatient Level of Care, Type of Mental Health Care, Outpatient Level of Service, Type of Mental Testing on ProviderConnect with a psychological/neurological testing form attached.
Authorization processes
Inpatient care (general hospitals and freestanding hospitals)

Housing services (family and program type)
Beacon Health Options provides information on the use of all residential services, regardless of bed size, for persons under 21 years of age.
Current Individual Plan is required for all services in the community.
See NC DHHS Implementation Update #90 for specific information on residence applications, including discharge plan, comprehensive clinical assessment, and psychiatric or psychological requirements.
Outpatient services
For beneficiaries under 21, the first 16 visits of the financial year are non-managed and do not require prior authorization. For beneficiaries aged 21 and over, the first 8 visits of the fiscal year are unsupervised and do not require prior authorization. If you are in doubt as to whether a beneficiary has exhausted the number of unmanaged visits, submit an authorization request to Beacon Health Options. Service orders must be submitted with all outpatient service requests. The service order needs to be renewed annually. A form of psychological/neurological testing is required for all testing requests.
Enhanced Services
Enhanced Services requires a Personalized Plan.

Retrospective reviews checking active Medicaid at the time of entry into service, but who were subsequently approved for Medicaid at the date of service. Appropriate medical records must either be attached to the ProviderConnect retrospective request or sent to Beacon Health Options by US mail at

Beacon Health Options has 60 days to review requests once complete information is received to ensure prompt processing. Please enter the start date and end date of the period you wish to view.
EPSDT Services
Beacon Health Options conducts Medical Necessity Reviews for beneficiaries under age 21 when services are requested that are not covered by the NC plan. The limits on the amount, amount, or frequency of the service described in the coverage policy may not apply if the service is medically necessary.
Human centered plan needs to be updated for EPSDT requests.

Customer/Supplier Relations
Providers can submit online inquiries to Customer Support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through ProviderConnect. Such requests will receive an email response that will appear in your inbox in your message center on ProviderConnect. Providers may also contact Beacon Health Options Customer Service for general inquiries at 888.510.1150 between 8:00 am and 6:00 am.
In regards to request escalation, a supplier unsatisfied with the response or handling of the request should collect the relevant information, call support, and simply ask to speak to a support manager to resolve the issue.
Provider number changes in completed authorizations
Upon request, Beacon Health Options will change provider numbers if authorized. Please read the description of each form below and choose the one that suits you.
Change Provider Confirmation Form
Use the Change Provider Confirmation Form to only request a change of provider for Medicaid recipients who appeal an adverse decision or whose provider agency goes out of business or is changing provider for another service with an authorization period of six months or more .
Provider change due to error or merger
Use Merge/Error Provider Change Request Form to request a provider number change for a completed authorization when correcting a previous submission error or due to a merger/acquisition. The fee is 9$.70 for each modified authorization. To request such changes, providers must complete the Provider Change Request form below and mail a printed copy of the completed form along with a check payable to Beacon Health Options Inc. for the corresponding amount:
