IN TEXAS – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas
According to the US Census Bureau, the population of Texas is growing. Between July 1, 2014 and July 2015, the number of Texans increased by 490,000. In Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington, the number of citizens increased by 144,704 people. With a total population of 7.1 million, Dallas/Fort Worth is still the most populous city in the state and the fourth most populous in the US.
Houston has grown by 159,083 during this period, bringing the total number of Houstonians to 6.6 million. The cities of Austin and San Antonio are now 108,680 more. Even small towns are experiencing phenomenal population growth. The population of Midland and Odessa grew by 3.3 percent, while College Station/Bryan grew by 2.6 percent.
Carers, nurses and other caregivers for the elderly are leaving their jobs at Texas nursing homes at a record rate. Reason: low pay for hard and very stressful work. This was announced at a meeting of the subcommittee on appropriations of the State House of Representatives by the director of government relations of the Texas Medical Services Association.
Texas has some of the lowest aged care benefits in the nation. And at the same time, there is the most stringent system of legal regulation of nursing homes.
There are signs of an impending crisis. The “turnover rate” among registered nurses in nursing homes is 94 percent. State law requires these institutions to transition to a managed care model. And in such conditions, nursing homes are trying to provide more intensive medical care to residents.
Over 85% of Texans in nursing homes are dependent on Medicaid and Medicare. But in terms of these benefits, Texas is the third-lowest in the nation. The gap between the cost of medical care provided and the amount of reimbursement is growing. The result: low pay for nurses and attendants, who are at the heart of long-term care.
Retaining professional and dedicated workers in nursing homes is becoming increasingly difficult. At the same time, the population of the state aged 65 years and older may soon triple. To improve the current situation, legislators must do everything possible to close the Medicaid funding gap. It is also proposed to create a system of financial incentives for nursing homes that provide high-quality medical care, and invest more in the training of medical staff.
The 390th District Court dismissed the criminal case against former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
In 2014, Perry was charged with making a public threat, which he then carried out by vetoing funding for the activities of the Corruption Investigation Unit. Perry’s actions were in response to the department’s head, a Democrat-affiliated leader, vehemently refusing to step down after her arrest for drunk driving.
The two charges against the former governor were dropped, and on April 6th the judge signed a cease and desist order.
That’s the amount a Dallas man paid for a regular bottle of Hidden Valley ranch sauce. Prior to this, the bottle stood for several years in a glass cabinet at the Cane Rosso pizzeria and was a playful “interior detail” familiar to all visitors. In March of this year, news spread around the city – a fire broke out in the shelter of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas and 70 dogs died. Restaurant owner Jay Jerrier, who owns 6 dogs, decided to hold an auction in the restaurant to raise money for the construction of a new shelter. Then the idea arose to put the sauce up for auction. Josh Tipton became the happy owner of the sauce for $1000, in just that day he managed to raise about $20 thousand.
However, the “iconic” bottle of sauce has not disappeared from the wall cabinet – instead of the sold bottle, a new one was solemnly installed there.
Very soon you will be able to swim in the “blue lagoon” in several places in Texas – and for this you will not need to go to the ocean! Construction company owner Kent Donahue plans to build an artificial bay on Ray Hubbard Lake, 15 miles from Dallas. The complex will be called Bayside. The pool is 8 acres (10 football fields) and will feature a fountain. A pier for yachts will be built near the artificial lagoon. The lagoon will be surrounded by residential buildings (two-story houses, apartments, houses), as well as office buildings and shopping and entertainment centers. The estimated total cost of the project is $1 billion.
Giant swimming pool with water filtration system will be created in partnership with Bayside Land Partners. Representatives of the Senate Committee on Education, in conjunction with the Senate Committee on Higher Education, met in late March to discuss the implementation of Education Bill HB 5 (passed in 2013) and the challenges of the Texas education system.
According to Higher Education Coordinating Board Representative Raymund Paredes, Texas is lagging behind most other states in preparing high school students for college and needs to upgrade its education system. “We are nearing a low point in our SAT scores and that is cause for concern,” Paredes said at this joint Senate committee meeting.
However, Governor Dan Patrick said the percentage of college-ready students has increased almost every school year since 2006-07, when the state first implemented standards to measure student readiness based on performance. SAT, ACT and other exams. Meanwhile, according to recent reports, Texas is on the list of five states where college readiness rates are inflated. This list also includes the states of Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Virginia.

At the beginning of this year, 3-year-old Baylee Myers, who lives with her mother in the town of Abilene, was diagnosed with a severe cancer – neuroblastoma. The girl was to be treated 150 miles from home, at the Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Stephanie’s mom felt absolutely exhausted: emotionally – from the misfortune that had fallen and financially. She fearfully thought that she and her daughter would have to sell the house and move closer to the hospital.
Upon learning of the misfortune in the Myers family, parishioners of their church – Beltway Park Baptist Church – literally rushed to help. One family that owns a house in Fort Worth offered a mother and daughter to live in it for free during treatment. What’s more, the house was refurbished with the help and donations of countless people.
When Stephanie’s mother saw her new home for the first time, she couldn’t hold back her tears, and Bailey immediately asked where her room was. The house was called “Bailey’s house”. Troy Deal, one of those who helped organize the project, says that after the girl is treated, they plan to move another family into the house, and then another.
