AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE Our Afterschool Program is designed to provide your child with the perfect after school experience. We believe our program is unique because of our attention to building a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Some components include:

DAILY HOMEWORK SUPPORT During afterschool, the Y is committed to provide 30-45 minutes per day for kids to start their homework. We want to make sure your child has an intentional amount of quiet time to focus and work on school assignments, where staff and volunteers are available to answer questions and provide support. While homework help is provided, we feel it is also important for the parent to have an active role in their child’s homework. Homework help is only part of our afterschool program. We will also incorporate “brain breaks” throughout the day to allow students time for other activities and socialization. Our YMCA staff team will work in partnership with your family to support academic success through assistance with classwork and homework assignments are successfully submitted by required deadlines will ultimately fall to participants’ families.

DAILY ACTIVE PLAY Each day the kids will have a little play time to burn off some energy before they hit the books. Kids will participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity. This could be kickball or soccer, jump rope and hopscotch, or tag games and fitness challenges. The options are endless! We’ll also provide a healthy snack for them every day.

AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT Participants also will receive one 45-minute academic enrichment program weekly to enhance the overall exposure to a balanced curriculum. This includes nutrition and wellness, 21st Century skills, college and career exploration, leadership development, service learning, arts and crafts, and global learning. All kids have potential and should have the opportunity to discover who they are, to express themselves, and to be nurtured to believe anything is possible. The Y works to improve the educational readiness, engagement, and outcomes of children so they can pursue their best possible future.

DAILY DEVOTIONS AND VALUES-BASED PROGRAMS What makes the Y experience unique is our commitment to promote Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith in all we do. This is done through devotions, small group discussions, academic enrichment and positive reinforcement of behaviors by great staff role models.

864-452-0400 [email protected]

Greenville County Schools is proud to offer our youngest children and their families six Child Development Centers, including Dunbar, Golden Strip, Greenview, Northwest Crescent, Overbrook, and Riley. These Centers function under the leadership of one principal, Amanda Lecaroz, and six assistant principals housed at each location. This leadership team ensures the consistent implementation of high quality programming and facility management among all six locations. All staff—leadership, teachers, nurses, clerks, and custodians—work collaboratively to insure the well-being, safety, and high quality programming for each child. In addition, as the child’s first and most important teacher, parents are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways—this participation is considered paramount in determining the effectiveness of our programs.

“Kids’ Favorite Summer Activity”

Jan. 2017

We love coming here. If you arrive earlier (in the morning) you will beat the crowds. School/childcare groups go around noon. There are plenty of shelters and the snack bar is adequate (but not amazing).

“Meryl nice water park, but pricey”

Aug. 2016

My grandchildren loved the water park but when I have all 10 of them it hits my pocket to take them. Eat before you go or plan a picnic outside the park.

July 2019 • Family fun

Otter Creek is well run with super staff who are attentive, friendly, and helpful. Lounge chairs available under shade or sun. Three areas of play: pool with beach entry (only up to 3 feet), slides, splash pad. Very clean everywhere. We drove from Asheville for the water slides for granddaughter 3 years old. Definitely will return, especially as granddaughter grows a few years older and would buy season passes is we lived closer. Best for children under teens with parents.

My grandchildren love this water park, but when I have all 10 of them, it breaks the bank to take them.

Summer Fun

June 2016 • Family Fun

For the past 3 years, I have purchased the season passes. Can’t go wrong here. Great pool, slides, very clean. And always relaxing. The entire pool is just 3 feet, so it’s perfect for everyone to cool down in. Really nice place to go.

Expensive day at the pool

June 2016 • Family fun

This is an overpriced day for family fun. It has 3 (4 if you count the kiddie slide) water slides. There is also a water fixture play area. We were there on a weekday and it was still super crowded. Snack bar is overpriced and they don’t allow outside coolers. What is a day at the water park without a picnic lunch? This is the only water park I have been to that did not allow you the bring outside food/drink.
There is a large refreshing (cold for some) pool. Greatest depth is less then 4 feet. Good for safety I guess, bad for grown ups crouched in the pool.
Overall, the kids had fun, but I wouldn’t make a return trip.

Always a Cool Place

June 2016 • Couples

This 8 miles up the hill from Cherrydale shopping area. Turn left on Darby. Not as busy as others. Three or four different slides and some shady areas to rest in. Also a concession stand. Stay all day.

After the Tampere County Court released her on bail, the tension subsided somewhat, but the situation remains in the focus of the media and has already spoiled relations between the two countries. At the same time, both the authorities and the media of both Russia and Finland notice in this story those circumstances that are beneficial for the parties to notice, and often interpret the same facts in the opposite way. Information is presented selectively, stereotypes are piled up, which make it almost impossible to hear the other side.

In Finland, the story is presented as the kidnapping of a child, a Finnish citizen, by a sectarian mother to poor, backward Russia. Former Consul for Legal Affairs of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, Simo Pietilä, who hid a banned boy and his father with an expired visa in the trunk, became a national hero. The plot seems to be copied from some Graham Greene Cold War spy novel.

And in Russia, few people ask questions, for example, about the decision of the Nizhny Novgorod court to deprive a child of Russian citizenship, which was suspiciously changed the next day to the exact opposite.

This happened the day before the boy was taken out – was it afterthought?

How the Finns gave their children to their father in the USA

SPb. Suomi has already experienced a similar story – however, with a different ending. When American John Rogers divorced Finnish Uti Koski, a US court left their children in joint custody.

But after the holidays with their mother in Finland, the children did not return. John immediately went to his local court, which awarded him custody, and put his mother on the wanted list on charges of contempt of court in Greenville County. Both the US and Finland signed the Hague Convention, so John went to Suomi to pick up the kids. There, however, he had to prove that he was innocent of harassing his ex-wife. “I discovered the intricate legal system of Finland,” Rogers lamented. He took the boys to Sweden, where he got American passports for them and took them to the Hard Rock Cafe. They flew through Paris, where an arrest warrant was waiting for John. Although the French judge took a liking to the American and, having found some inaccuracies in the Finnish request, allowed him to leave, the children were returned to their mother. Soon, however, the Supreme Court of Finland took the side of his father. Uti Koski remarried an American and went there for permanent residence, where she was arrested on the old charge. Remember to respect the court of Greenville County, South Carolina?

Paavo Salonen gave permission for his son to meet his mother, but instead she ended up in prison.

    Photo: photas

Rimma Salonen knew that Finland had a warrant for her arrest, threatening a five-year prison term.
