what is a drop-in childcare facility?

It is a pay-by-the-hour, flexible childcare service.

Drop in childcare facilities are also known as part-time care. Children are able to stay in our center up to 4 hours a day. This gives caregivers the chance to run errands, attend doctor appointments, drink a warm cup of coffee (in peace) or anything their heart desires!

Interested in regular visits or have multiple kids you like to drop-off?

At Play4Hours we will be offering
pay-by-the-hour and discounted packaging available.

Packaging rates can be used for the full family.  Purchase a package and save on the hourly rate.

enrichment programs

Our team is actively planning enrichment programs to keep your child entertained and engaged during their stay.

While we are finalizing our enrichment programs, we are focusing on the following activities:  arts and crafts, music and movement, fine motor

activities and sensory play.

Play4hours encourages children to learn and grow by providing a foundation of developmentally appropriate experiences where all children can succeed in a safe and nurturing environment. We believe children learn best through meaningful play. Meaningful play encourages curiosity, discovery and problem solving which allows individual growth and development of a positive self-image.

our team & facility

Directors, teachers and caregivers will work together to encourage growth in each child. Growth can be as small as a child independently drinking from a cup to finding a lifelong friend here at Play4hours!

We recommend planning a stop-in visit for your child to see the facility, meet their teachers and see some activities they can partake in. While they are exploring this gives caregivers time to register and complete all needed forms.

With a little preparation, you can help your child look forward to having fun at our drop in center. We understand separation  may be hard for your little ones and you. That is why we work with you for a smooth transition. We offer video monitoring for all caregivers to check in on their child/children throughout their stay.

We can also ensure the safety of your children with 24/7 locked doors.

Andi decided to bring the concept of a drop-in childcare center after using a very similar concept when she lived in North Carolina.  Shortly after moving to Cincinnati, she looked to utilize a similar concept for her family needs.  Several years went by and Andi decided she wanted to offer this to her community.

Andi spends her time working at A Touch of Energy Wellness, a local westside med spa, and raising her 3 beautiful children. Andi started in education by working as a substitute teacher. She then went on to start and grow a caregiver’s group in NC, where isolated, new mothers could get together and plan events, meet for playdates and rely on each other for support. Andi wants Play4Hours to be the center of support for parents, not just as a convenient place for child care, but for parents to  find support from each. Children will also find Play4Hours to have opportunities to learn, interact, discover and play!

Infinite Improvement: Six Sigma and the Cincinnati 9 Athletic Club0001

Using Six Sigma, the Cincinnati Athletic Club is fixing problems one by one, one by one.

          • John Feld
          • March 28, 2018
How can you hone your competitive edge?

What if you made a commitment to improve every business process or procedure every time they are used? And back up this commitment with the necessary investment?

This is a pretty lofty target that Marco Fiorini, operations manager for the Cincinnati Athletic Club (CSC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been aiming for since June 2015, when he was promoted to his current position. While there are no short cuts to organizational excellence, Fiorini found an accurate and proven roadmap in the renowned Six Sigma system.

Developed by Motorola, Inc. in 1986, Six Sigma is a quality management platform whose philosophy is based on these three main findings:

          • Continuous efforts to achieve consistent and predictable process outcomes (for example, by reducing process variability) are vital to business success.
          • Manufacturing and business processes have characteristics that can be defined, measured, analysed, improved and controlled.
          • Achieving sustainable quality improvement requires commitment from the entire organization, especially from senior management. nine0020

Six Sigma became one of the founding principles of the Fortune 500 after it was adopted by GE Chairman Jack Welsh in the mid-1990s. In 1998 alone, the company attributed over $350 million in savings to the system, and later increased that figure to $1 billion.

This begs the question: Can Six Sigma be successfully applied in a small business environment such as a CSC? Or other IHRSA clubs? Fiorini and other experts say yes. nine0003

          Cincinnati Athletic Club Lounge

          Earning a Diploma

The good news is that Six Sigma can work in almost any business, small or large, because it is fundamentally about putting the customer at the center of the company, says Rajan Kamath, Ph. D., assistant professor of strategy at the Carl H. Lindner School of Business at the University of Cincinnati and president of Artesiaa Consulting, also based in Cincinnati. nine0003

If you ask your employees the question, “Why would any customer want to pay for your accidents, mistakes, delays, and losses?” of this fundamental understanding, each company can build its own systematic approach—call it business intelligence, quality management, project management, or whatever you like—to improve customer service.”

Kamath helped Fiorini set up a program at CSC, which some classify as a “small business” but is quite large by fitness industry standards.

The main building, spread over 15 acres, is approximately 110,000 square feet, with an adjoining 12,000 square foot squash facility. During peak periods, it employs 75 full-time employees and up to 250 part-time employees, as well as 50 external employees, including in information technology, maintenance and cleaning of premises. nine0003

Fiorini says he was drawn to a data-driven Six Sigma approach to develop processes and methodologies that could improve the customer experience while helping to reduce costs and improve the bottom line.

“The Cincinnati Athletic Club is a results-driven, data-driven institution, and our members’ feedback is an important part of our long-term planning,” he says. “We constantly strive to exceed their expectations.” nine0003

To get in on the action, Fiorini took an online course and test over several months in mid-2016 and earned his Six Sigma Green Belt certification. interrelated phases: “Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.” Then, in May 2017, he completed a Black Belt course at nearby Xavier University and also completed a final project that earned him a certificate. nine0003

A Black Belt means that people have mastered the Six Sigma roadmaps—extensive arithmetic methodologies and cross-functional process improvements—and are qualified to lead Six Sigma teams.

To date, Fiorini is one of the few, if not the only, fitness industry professionals to have received this prestigious certification.

“If you ask your employees the question: “Why would any client want to pay for your accidents, mistakes, delays and waste?”, then you will immediately help them see the activity as useless and wasteful in the eyes of the client.” nine0011

Rajan Kamath, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Strategy

University of Cincinnati Carl H. Lindner School of Business

          Fast Results

Although the Six Sigma program has been relatively short-lived at CSC, Fiorini can point to a number of benefits that are already got the club. In fact, these benefits became very apparent when he took on the course completion project.

His mission was to address the root causes of recurring maintenance and cleaning problems. nine0003

“Every two months, we walk through more than 20 departments associated with these two areas and rate each one from zero to five, with zero being the lowest,” he says. “And if the problem isn’t fixed by the next round, the department gets a negative score.”

Fiorini collects these ratings and, using a Pareto chart, analyzes all repeated negative ratings to find their root. The Pareto chart, a widely used Six Sigma tool, contains both a bar chart and a line chart, where individual values are presented in descending order by bars, and the cumulative total is represented by a line. nine0003

“Overall, the data showed that, for example, maintenance rates for the men’s locker room were higher than for the women’s,” he says.

He took the negative ratings and categorized them in another chart called the Fishbone or Ishikawa chart, which is designed to show the cause of particular events. The categories included areas such as no learning, focusing on the wrong things, no detours, and no communication.

“We found that the problems were not due to lack of maintenance,” says Fiorini. “In fact, they were due to something that is easy to fix – a lack of training or communication. ” So now enhanced training for new employees and better communication with existing employees ensures that everyone understands the processes involved in their work.

          A Valuable Tool

To date, Six Sigma has made an impact in other areas as well. maintenance, CSC ultimately decided that the cost savings and reduced inconvenience to company members justified installing a standby unit.0003

We have also recently established a Member Retention Committee and we are using Six Sigma principles to study membership removal rates across everything from personal training to happy hour attendance, childcare, group activities and other activities. “, says Fiorini. “After looking at the low and high removal rates, we asked the committee to reach out to those who removed the most and suggest alternative activities. After the first round, we reduced the dropout rate by a whole percentage. “And although we do not publish data on the number of members, I can say that the difference is quite significant. ” nine0003

Motivated by this experience, Fiorini decided to train others at CSC. His Black Belt certification entitles him to teach 5S, the Japanese sub-section of Sixth Sigma. The letters in translation mean “sort”, “put in order”, “shine”, “standardize” and “support”.

This training takes place with the help of Kamat, because it must be done carefully in order to be effective.

“We’ve also recently created a Member Retention Committee and we’re using Six Sigma principles to study dropout rates for club members in everything from personal training to those attending our happy hours, childcare, group classes and other activities. nine0011

quick wins,” says Kamath. “You can’t learn if you feel intimidated, which is why at CSC we make sure everyone feels comfortable and has expert control when using a new tool or technique.” nine0003

After people learn how to use the tool, it will take some time before they feel confident, he said, so the training program makes extensive use of templates, standard forms and questionnaires to help people remember what they learned.

“And we make sure they have mentors,” he adds. “Even if we keep our finger on the pulse, we need the positive energy of success to inspire motivation for continuous improvement. That’s why we make sure that everyone has one or two successful projects.” nine0003

          Better every day

Simply put, Six Sigma allowed Fiorini to iron out many of the rough edges of the business, making his employees and staff happier.

“By implementing the system and creating more standardization, we can usually mitigate six mistakes out of 100 that happen. Because those six mistakes don’t happen anymore, we’re doing a lot less firefighting and jet control and more long-term planning.”

“It’s always better to be proactive. Using Six Sigma has helped address some of the root causes behind some of the major, recurring problems. After all, we want to stay relevant to our members; fewer errors make their experience more seamless.” nine0003

What advice does Fiorini have for other operators who are considering introducing Six Sigma into their business?

He emphasizes that continuous improvement should be a fundamental cultural value that all employees cherish.
