From Indiana: Words About Fake Clinics
Whole Woman’s Health Alliance is a non-profit organization that operates abortion clinics in Austin, Texas , and Charlottesville, Virginia. The Whole Woman’s Health Alliance is currently awaiting Indiana’s decision on a licensing appeal so they can open a clinic in South Bend. For the latest South Bend news, we spoke with Whole Woman’s Health Director of Clinical Services (North) Sharon Lau.
Fake Women’s Health Centers (also known as Crisis Pregnancy Centers) outnumber abortion clinics in the United States by at least 3 to 1. These centers are comprehensive reproductive health clinics with the goal and mission of shaming and deceiving women in order to they didn’t have abortions.
They deliberately position themselves near or very close to abortion clinics and choose names to confuse and mislead patients.
Like many clinics that actually provide abortion services, Whole Woman’s Health has firsthand experience with these fake clinics.
We could tell story after story about how women shared their experiences with us in these centers, but here is just one recent story.
The Women’s Care Center (WCC), an organization with over 20 fake women’s health centers in 11 states, operates a center right next door to Whole Woman’s Health (WWH) in Peoria, Illinois.
A couple came to our clinic and told our staff that they went to the WCC by mistake. The WCC staff made them think they were in the right place and pulled the couple apart. They performed an ultrasound on the women, and when she sensed something was wrong and tried to confirm she was there for an abortion, the WCC officer said they needed to talk more. She then placed the couple in front of a large screen with a photo of their ultrasound and stickers saying “hi mommy” and “hi daddy.

When they finally got to WWH, my husband asked our staff why they (WCC) are allowed to be so close and make people think they are in the right place? Indeed, why? Because the WCC and other organizations like them don’t really want women to make their own decisions about important health issues, but instead want to mislead and shame them into continuing their pregnancies no matter what. Unfortunately, these stories are not unique. This is a deliberate strategy of fake women’s health centers across the country.
We are in the process of opening a clinic in South Bend, Indiana and have purchased a commercial building uniquely suited to our needs after several landlords refused to rent to us. Shortly thereafter, the Women’s Care Center (WCC) purchased a residential property right next door to our building.
They sought to change the area of the building for commercial use so they could open one of their centers, claiming that they wanted only women living in the neighborhood to have options and easy access to care.
Not only does WCC already have 5 centers in South Bend and surrounding communities, an anonymous donor gave money to a project with a pronounced fortune of to have their center located next door to WWH.
WCC could purchase one of the many vacant buildings in the same area with the same women’s access in the area that has already been zoned for commercial use. Instead, they decided to buy a building that was not yet vacant and zoned for their needs.
The community fought back, and with the help of the brave Common Council members and Mayor Pete Buttigieg, they won. Ultimately rezoning denied .
Throughout the process, the WCC touted their support and respect for women while denying that their goal of trying to find a house next door to WWH had anything to do with confusing women. Their argument was clearly insincere. This choice was a clear indication that their priority was first and foremost to be right next door to Whole Woman’s Health (WWH), where we know from experience with other WCC sites this would be designed to confuse and mislead women.
Shortly after the rejection of the rezoning, the WCC announced that they were buying commercially zoned property right across the street from WWH. While we are not surprised, we are disappointed by the persistence of an unlicensed, non-medical healthcare provider who continues to try to discourage and shame patients into not coming for our healthcare services.
We hope that the Women’s Help Center will make good on its assurances that it will not resort to the deceit that we have experienced before, but we are not optimistic.
At the Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, we trust women to weigh their situation and their options and come up with the best solution for them. We create a welcoming space without judgment, provide high-quality medical care, and understand that women themselves know whether and when to have children.

There are only 6 abortion clinics in the entire state of Indiana.
This means that some women have to drive for more than three hours to get abortion care. Distance creates an additional barrier for women who need care, especially when other possible factors such as the cost of gas, travel arrangements, childcare planning, or work interruption are taken into account.
2. Political intervention should not prevent a woman’s access to safe abortion care.
Politicians like Mike Pence continue to push restrictive legislation that prevents women from accessing the abortion care they need. Indiana is classified as “highly hostile” to abortion rights, as new laws have been passed in recent years that burden women seeking abortion and force clinics to close. In 2014 about 95 percent of Indiana’s counties did not have abortion clinics, and 66 percent of Indiana women lived in those counties. There are now only six clinics in Indiana open to serve women, up from 10 in 2011.
3. When women are denied the opportunity to choose what happens to their bodies, they lose their freedom.
Denying women the right to have an abortion is a slippery slope to denying other care, including birth control, emergency contraception, and even proper prenatal care. When women can choose what happens to their bodies and when, they can also choose what is best for their future, their families, and themselves.
4. South Bend deserves the very best in healthcare, including a full range of women’s reproductive health options.
