Meet Lola Khan, founder and CEO of CultivatePeople.
Technology continues to be dominated by white men. Lola Khan’s business is booming, but the road to success has never been easy. While expanding her business, Khan said she faced many challenges, but they usually have more to do with her gender than her ethnicity.
In 2017, Khan founded DevelopPeople , a consulting firm that helps startups and emerging tech companies develop better payment schemes. The company’s mission is to make compensation painless for companies, and to help address pay inequality for fast-growing companies by using machine learning to match employee performance with reliable global market data. The CultivatePeople software was launched publicly in July 2020, but even with all the success, Khan still has to deal with people who doubt her.
“About a year ago I had a happy hour and a guy asked me what I do for a living. I told him that I am the CEO and founder of a tech startup that helps ensure that employees are paid fairly,” Khan. shared in an email interview. “Later that evening, he comes back and says to me, ‘You know, earlier, when you told me you were the CEO, I thought you meant the CEO of a bag company or something.’
Situations like this, which happened more than once, prompted Khan to prove people wrong about her ability to run a company. When it comes to scaling from startup founder to CEO, she values mentoring and learning opportunities the most.
Where she started
Han is a first-generation US citizen born to Korean parents who immigrated to the US from South Korea in 1973. Although she was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland, she did not speak English until she entered kindergarten. Her parents worked hard and saved every penny to open a coffee shop in downtown Washington, D. C., where Khan worked during his high school summer break.
Although her experience in a coffee shop was rewarding, Khan did not consider herself making a living making lattes and cappuccinos. She always dreamed of her own business. She ventured into technology after working as a compensation manager for Ellucian , an education technology solutions provider, in 2012, where she eventually worked her way up to Senior Director of Human Resources. It was in this role that Khan learned the general departments and functions of a technology company.
As I grew and scaled a non-tech company, I felt there were fewer complexities to consider and plan for.
“I knew I wanted to eventually start my own business helping startups, but I knew I needed to have actual startup experience to gain credibility,” she said. Lifebuoy .
Khan has lived in D.C. for almost her entire life, with the exception of 2015-2017, when she moved to San Francisco to get a real start-up experience. She worked at Lookout and Zendesk at the time before returning home to start her own venture. When she saw that her client base needed to build inclusive compensation software, Khan did just that.
“Many of my clients, who are mostly HR or HR executives, kept asking me if I could recommend any compensation tools or software that could help make compensation less painful for them,” she shared. . “They didn’t exist on the market, so I decided to build it myself – one tool that has reliable data on rewards in the global market, but also helps to automate the routine reward processes in companies.”
How she leads and plans to grow
Khan continues to pursue learning opportunities for start-ups, and she has learned the importance of delegating tasks to her team of six to evenly distribute tasks and avoid burnout.
“Because I’m hiring more managers, my job is more about removing obstacles and giving my people the resources they need,” Khan explained.
Prior to the pandemic, Khan’s employees were already working remotely, with most of them based in the District of Columbia. An established virtual culture has helped her company adjust to the health crisis much faster than others.
“For the last couple of years I’ve been working from DC, Hawaii, California and even Slovenia,” she said. “We’re a passionate team, and now that we’re growing fast, we’re celebrating every new customer virtually with lots of fun GIFs and emojis.”
Khan said that the growth of a technology-oriented consulting firm has its advantages and challenges. She said the biggest challenge she had was finding technical people (as opposed to non-technical people) to join her team. Despite this, her company’s growth rate is high, so she is constantly looking for new team members. Tech startups need to make sure their products are safe and secure for consumers online, she says, which adds another thick layer of priorities to focus on.
“When I was growing and scaling a non-tech company, I felt like there were fewer complexities to consider and plan for,” Khan said.
