Astrophysics Summer Camp

Whether online or in-person, Education Unlimited proudly offers top-tier curriculum in our Astrophysics program!

To learn more about our online program, click here.

Beginning from the cosmic chaos, astrophysics will delineate the foundation goals of the field by tracing the evolution of the universe from its origins through to modern times and probing into its future fate.

Students will delve into the depths of the cosmos to push their understanding to the very frontier of the unknown, and perchance beyond that! Students embarking on this adventure will be introduced to the wave-particle duality of light, radiation, and stellar evolution, illuminating their curiosities in the process. They will then explore advanced topics in cosmology such as supermassive black holes, spacetime fabric, and mapping the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Studies will culminate with Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

The curriculum is supported by computational simulations of dark matter and galactic formation, physical demonstration, student-led discussions, and thought experiments. Observational astronomy will be interlaced into the course using solar and night sky observational telescopes, focusing on techniques for identifying the constellations and naked-eye astronomy. Students will pursue their final research in a self-selected specification of interest. Projects vary but are all relevant to modern professional research and exploration, such as observational astrophysics, astroparticle physics, or physical cosmology. Their final research projects will incorporate real data from working telescopes and research laboratories.

Education Unlimited believes in small-group, immersive learning with subject matter experts and experienced teachers. We strive to provide industry-leading instruction to all of our students and hold all staff to the highest possible standards. Staff assignments vary by program and location. Some of our recent staff members for this program include:

Micol Chirstopher, PhD – Instructor

Dr. Micol Christopher received his undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy/Astrophysics at Harvard University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.  He subsequently completed a Ph.D. program in Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where his research focused on analyzing young star clusters both around the black hole at the center of our galaxy and in the colliding galaxy system known as the Antennae.  Even from his time at Harvard, Micol knew that teaching was his true passion, so after Caltech, he began teaching Astronomy at Mt. San Antonio College, a two-year college in Walnut, California.  He has been a tenured full-time professor there since 2006 and has taught introductory astronomy and astronomy lab classes to well over 2000 students.  Micol also created online versions of both the introductory astronomy class and the astronomy lab class and has been teaching some classes online each semester since 2014.  Micol absolutely loves teaching and the opportunity to share the passion that he has for astronomy and learning with all of his students.  In his spare time, Micol enjoys outings and adventures with his young son, taking hikes in the Southern California mountains, traveling, and experiencing foods from all cultures.

Allen B. Davis, PhD – Instructor

Dr. Allen B. Davis received his PhD in astrophysics from Yale University in 2021. His dissertation explored novel uses of statistical techniques to aid in the detection of potentially habitable exoplanets, and it presented the discovery of two new giant exoplanets detected by the TESS mission. Teaching is Dr. Davis’s greatest professional passion. He has five years of experience teaching undergraduate astronomy students at Williams College and Yale University, and he has served as a full-time high school physics and math teacher at the International School of Boston for the past year. Dr. Davis loves incorporating astronomy into his classes wherever possible; he takes great pleasure in seeing his students light up as they come to understand complex topics when they are broken down and presented in an accessible way.

Gladys Velez Caicedo – Instructor

Gladys Velez Caicedo is an instructor in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  A graduate of Columbia University in New York City, Gladys holds a Bachelor of Science degree in astronomy & physics.  Gladys has conducted high energy particle astrophysics at various labs around the world, such as Nevis Laboratories and as part of the VERITAS collaboration. Gladys developed a passion for high school education during her college years. While at Columbia, she established the Columbia Education Studies Program in 2011, designed to give high school students wide-range access to university education.  Gladys joined the Education Unlimited team in 2017. She has developed the curriculum for both the astrophysics and introduction to astrophysics programs.

3 Week Academic Summer Camps

Please note: Beginning for summer 2022, students should apply to programs and select courses based on the grade they will enter in fall of 2022.

The 3-week Academic Day and Residential Camps welcome applications from pre-qualified applicants as well as New Scores and Portfolio applicants. Before beginning the online application, determine which type of applicant you are based on the descriptions below.

Applications are submitted through MyCTD. Applicants are encouraged to apply early; many courses begin to fill by mid-March. Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are completed. Incomplete applications do not “hold a spot” in the desired course. Once you have made a payment and submitted the application you will receive an email with further instructions. You will then be able to return to the application and select View Application Details to upload any necessary documents and to get the teacher recommendation link, if necessary. If you determine you have applied using an incorrect method, please email [email protected] as soon as possible.  Applying with an incorrect method will delay your application and could result in not obtaining a seat in your first-choice class before it fills to capacity.

Pre-qualifed Review Applicant

You are a pre-qualified review applicant if you meet both of the following criteria:

  • You have successfully completed a CTD course at the same, or more rigorous tier (Emerald, Magenta or Indigo), within the previous two years.
  • You are now applying for a course with the same qualifying subject area (Verbal, Math, or Science) as the CTD course you previously completed.

Please note: course eligibility requirements vary by grade level and type of course (enrichment versus accelerated). Please see the eligibility section and check the course descriptions for details.

New Scores Applicant

You are a new scores applicant if you meet either one of the following criteria:

  • You have not attended any CTD program for the past two years and you have qualifying test scores (Verbal, Math or Science) for your desired course that are no more than two years old.
  • You have previously completed a CTD course, but you are now applying for a course with a different qualifying subject area (Verbal, Math, or Science) and you have qualifying test scores.

New Portfolio Applicant

You are a portfolio applicant if you do not have qualifying test scores because you have either:

  • never taken a nationally normed standardized achievement test or above-grade-level test, OR
  • taken this type of test but not achieved a qualifying score.

An Admission Portfolio includes the following documents:

  • Required: one teacher recommendation form (available once you have submitted your application) indicating that the student is performing 1½ to 2 years above grade level in the subject area of the course to which the student is applying;
  • Required: most recent school transcript or report card indicating exceptional performance in the subject area of the course to which the student is applying;
  • If available: most recent standardized testing report (e. g. NWEA/MAP) or results of a state grade-level assessment.

Please note: Beginning for summer 2022, applicants should apply to programs based on the grade they will enter in fall of 2022.

Because applications are accepted on a continuous basis, courses that are listed as available may close before a student’s application is complete and comes up for review. We strongly suggest listing second and third choice courses on applications. Applications are processed and reviewed by Admissions staff when all necessary documentation has been provided through the applicant’s MyCTD account.

It can take up to a week for our staff to first review newly submitted applications as well as any documentation provided to complete an application later. Until our staff has verified documents, they will not yet be marked as received in MyCTD. We kindly ask you to not call nor email our office to confirm receipt of documentation or application items within a week of submitting them.

It may take 2 to 4 weeks for an admissions decision to be made once the application is complete.  You will receive an email once an admissions decision has been made.

Accepted Students

Accepted students will receive admissions materials via email two to four weeks after their application is complete. Enrollment information will include a link to information regarding housing and travel details, a packing list, required health information, as well as program rules and policies. This information will be available in late spring.

Deadlines

The application period for 6-12 Academic Summer Camps will close Monday, June 20 for Session 1 and Thursday, July 7 for Session 2, 2022.  Applications must be submitted AND completed by this date to be considered for enrollment.

Residential space may be limited.

After May 16, 2022, tuition increases by $100.

Applications submitted after June 1, 2022 must be accompanied by full tuition payment.
