Baby Hates The Car Seat? 9 Survival Tips

It’s gut wrenching – you need to go somewhere in the car, but the minute you put your baby in the car seat, he starts screaming. And he continues to do so the whole way there.

Unfortunately, it’s not just once, it’s every time.

Rest assured, you’re not alone. Many parents of young babies and toddlers experience the heightened stress of an anti-car baby.

It’s understandably difficult, battling feelings of guilt with the mechanics of driving a car, while attempting to soothe your baby from a distance at the same time.

“Zachary absolutely hated the car from his very first trip. Once he started crying, it would escalate, and the only thing that would calm him down was being removed from the car. I’d take him out and he’d be wet with sweat, shaky, red-eyed. It was incredibly distressing for everyone.” — Talia

“My oldest child would cry if the car stopped. And then he wouldn’t stop until he wore himself out and fell asleep exhausted. Nine years later I still remember vividly rolling up to traffic lights willing them to change before the car stopped.” — Anna

What To Do When Baby Hates The Car Seat

So what can you do to help your baby cope and preserve your nerves as at the same time? Here are 9 great tips from mothers who have made it through to the other side:

Baby Car Seat SOS #1 – Take Some Deep Breaths

When your baby cries, you may feel anxious, upset, stressed and pretty darn horrible. Hearing the sobs and wails is heart breaking, and you can literally feel your blood pressure going through the roof. You probably already know this, but there is nothing you can do. Remember, your baby is wired for safety, which means he wants to be in your arms. Of course this is not practical when driving, so take some slow deep breaths and focus your attention on helping yourself to feel centred. Practice mindfulness and just breathe. By not staying calm yourself, you will only feel worse.

What is mindfulness and how does it help with stress, anxiety and depression? Check out this great clip:

Baby Car Seat SOS #2 – Check Your Thoughts

Thoughts become feelings so check your thoughts. If you’re thinking about how awful the situation is or how bad of a decision you made to drive – you’ll just feel even more rotten. Some good mantras can be helpful. The favourite, ‘this too shall pass’ is a good one. Its important to remember that it’s just a phase and will get better, and eventually be a thing of the past.

“Both my kids went through a stage where they would just scream in the car and there was absolutely nothing that would calm them. The good news is that they both grew out of it in about a month or two (longest month or two ever!). Now they are both happy and content in the car.” — Mylitta

Baby Car Seat SOS #3 – Soothe Your Nerves With Some Tunes

You may find playing some music not only distracts you, but also helps to soothe your baby. You could keep a CD of your baby’s favourite nursery rhymes in the car for these occasions. Alternatively, try having your own karaoke party in the car. Your baby will be soothed by your voice, and you may find this stops him crying. Ok, you might not sound great, but no-one else can hear you. Unless you’re driving in a convertible with the roof down of course…

“I often found music helped keep me calm. I know a crying baby is an awful thing to hear but my stress levels rise if that is ALL I can hear. Music gave baby something else to focus on and me something else to focus on.” — Anna

Baby Car Seat SOS #4 – Siblings To The Rescue

Siblings can be a great source of comfort if they are old enough not to unintentionally hurt baby. Silly faces, songs or gentle talking can help distract baby. Sitting your children close to each other may help to avoid tears in the car. Give the older sibling a selection of toys and books to use in case your baby does become upset.

“One thing that helped was moving his car seat into the middle, so that he was (rear facing) next to his sister, who is 3. Now, they face each other, and she does a fantastic job of keeping him happy, waving toys at him, playing peekaboo etc. So I would recommend trying to put the baby next to a toddler or older sibling, as long as they aren’t going to hurt them!” — Talia

Baby Car Seat SOS #5 – Take Regular Breaks

This one can help; but it can also just delay the inevitable. Most mums find that baby will resume crying once they are placed back into their carseat again. This one comes down to a judgement call really. If you are mid-way through a long journey and baby is crying with hunger, you should find somewhere suitable to pull over. If you’re only driving for a few minutes and baby is crying because he wants a cuddle, it may be best to power through. That way, when the journey is over you can enjoy a big cuddle and not to have to worry about strapping him immediately back into the dreaded car seat.

“If you can safely pull over and give your baby a cuddle then you may like to do this to reassure yourself they are ok but they are also quite likely to start off where they stopped as soon as they are put back into their car seat. ” — Anna

Baby Car Seat SOS #6 – Large Baby Mirror

Placing a large baby mirror in the back seat may help. A large mirror will allow you to see how your baby is doing, and will also allow baby to check that you’re still there. With young babies, it could simply be the fear of parental abandonment causing feelings of panic, and being able to see you may help to prevent crying.

Baby Car Seat SOS #7 – Car DVD Player

This one has been a big saviour for our family, especially since we currently live in the country and have big drives most of the time. It’s not that expensive these days to get some headrest DVD players which can play baby’s favourite DVD. It’s made a big difference to our trips and our sanity.

Baby Car Seat SOS #8 – Minimise Trips Where You Can

Some trips are necessary, but it’s okay to surrender and minimise trips where you can. Forget the pressure to be everywhere and do everything – be a homebody for a little while, or just cut back where you can. If you’re meeting friends or family, ask them to come to you instead. If you have older children, ask if others can help with school runs for a little while too. People will understand that it’s not always that easy to get out with a baby.

Public transport is another great alternative while your baby gets through this fussy stage. My daughter loves traveling on the train or bus. She’s right there with me, and when she was little, she’d often sleep through the trips because she’d be cosy in her baby carrier.

If you’re only travelling a short distance, consider walking instead. Keep your baby close in a sling or wrap, and you’ll be able to chat away whilst you walk. Not that he’ll be listening though, chances are he’ll be cuddled up asleep on your chest.

Baby Car Seat SOS #9 – Check Your Baby’s Comfort

Some things you might like to check that could be upsetting your baby include:

  • Is my baby too hot? Some car seats are made from fabrics that don’t breathe so well and they can end up sweaty and sticky, especially on warmer days
  • Is my baby catching too much sun? Sometimes babies end up with too much sun on their face, even through tinted windows
  • Is my baby too cold? Are there any draughts coming through a window? Or could a window down be causing baby’s ears to feel uncomfortable due to the wind?
  • Consider a sucking comfort for your baby – be it your finger or someone else’s

Resist the Temptation To Turn Your Baby’s Car Seat Around Too Early

Babies are safest in your car when they are rear facing. The chances of being in a collision are slim, but it’s important your child is properly protected in case one occurs. In a rear facing car seat, the stress on the child’s neck is minimised in the event of a collision. A baby’s neck muscles are not yet strong enough to withstand the force of a collision. Experts recommend keeping your child rear facing until at least 15 months.

“A lot of mothers are so distressed by crying they turn car seats forward facing. For me, the risks of spinal injury outweigh a few weeks of crying, so whilst it may be tempting, turning the car seat shouldn’t be considered lightly.” — Anna

It’s generally assumed that most babies love travelling in the car. You can understand why — the gentle movement combined with the purr of the engine and a cosy car seat should guarantee a peaceful nap.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for my daughter. From her very first car trip on the way home from the hospital, she absolutely hated it. She screamed from the moment we strapped her in, until we pulled her sweaty and shuddering body out at the end of each trip.

Driving was understandably traumatic for everyone concerned, but for both practical and mental health reasons, I couldn’t stop using the car. For one, we all needed to eat and the shopping wasn’t going to do itself! In addition, it’s vital for a new mum to get out and about for her own peace of mind. It may have been tempting to stay at home, but I knew that I had to find a way for my daughter to tolerate car trips for all our sakes.

I did a bit of research and found out it was actually reasonably common for some young babies to dislike travelling in the car. Fortunately, there are some ways you can make the experience bearable, (and even enjoyable) for mum and bub.

Here are some things you can try:

Install a mirror
For some babies, they feel overwhelmed when they can’t see mum or dad and that was certainly the case for us. An easy solution is to attach a car seat mirror to the back of the head rest. Not only could my baby see us, but I could also check out what she was doing.

Get some shade
My baby was born in summer and she hated the hot sun on her face. Installing some shades on the backseat windows was a great way to block out the sun and reduce glare.

Change from a capsule
Capsules are so convenient, however some babies don’t like how enclosed a capsule can be around their bodies, particularly in summer when it can be warm. If your baby is in a capsule and seems to be overly uncomfortable, you might want to consider changing to a convertible car seat. A child car seat like the Britax Safe-n-Sound Graphene™ could be the perfect solution. It allows toddlers to be rear-facing until up to about two to three years, which is great, as it’s up to five times safer than forward-facing. Plus, its slimline design means its compact enough to fit three seats across the backseat.

Consider the temperature
If you don’t want to swap the capsule but you think your baby is getting too hot, there’s another solution available. I bought a little portable pram fan from a baby store which I clipped onto the edge of the head rest. They’re really lightweight and have a twisty head so you can direct the airflow where you want it. If you have a sweaty little bub, another thing to consider is the fabric the car seat is made of. The latest Britax car seats are made from Thermo5™—a high-performing Bamboo Charcoal fabric, which provides airflow and wicks moisture away.

Add some entertainment
Sometimes all they need is a little distraction. In-built DVD players—or even iPads mounted to the back of car seats—make for a great way to keep little ones distracted. Avoiding toys and other objects that can become airborne is also ideal.

Play some music
On more than one occasion, I resorted to singing ‘Old Macdonald Had a Farm’ at the top of my lungs, to help quieten down my restless little one. After a few months, I realised I could outsource my singing and bought a Play School CD to leave in the car. Every time we needed a little distraction, I would press play and ‘There’s a Bear in There’ would calm her down instantly. These days, there are even Spotify playlists that can substitute for a CD like this.

Plan your journey around naps and feeds
When considering a car journey, it’s vital to think about your baby’s routine and work out the best time to travel. One thing I learnt pretty quickly is travelling when your baby is hungry is probably not the most ideal time. There’s nothing worse than hearing their distress and knowing what it is they want but not being able to give it to them. I realised if my baby was tired enough, she might eventually (and probably reluctantly) nap in the car, so that was the best time to plan my longer journeys.

For us, it was a combination of all of the above suggestions that eventually helped my daughter to tolerate the car. Like a lot of aspects of parenting, it’s all about trial and error.

Experiment with different solutions until you find the one that works for you and your child. Bon voyage!

Car Seat Crying

By Elizabeth Pantley
Author of Gentle Baby Care

Some babies fall asleep almost before you’re out of the driveway, but others won’t spend five happy minutes in their car seats. Usually, this is because your baby is used to more freedom of movement and more physical attention than you can provide when she’s belted into her seat.

RELATED: Download Our Ages & Stages Chart: Birth to 5 Years Old

Hearing your baby cry while you are trying to drive is challenging. Even though it’s difficult to deal with, remember that you and your baby’s safety are most important. Parents sometimes take a crying baby out of the car seat, which is extremely dangerous and makes it even more difficult for the baby to get used to riding in the car seat. Some parents make poor driving decisions when their babies are crying, which puts everyone in the car at risk. Either pull over and calm your baby down, or focus on your driving. Don’t try to do both.

The good news is that a few new ideas and a little time and maturity will help your baby become a happy traveler. (I know because three of my babies were car-seat-haters!)

The trip to car seat happiness

Any one (or more) of the following strategies may help solve your car seat dilemma. If the first one you try fails, choose another one, then another; eventually, you’ll hit upon the right solution for your baby.

Make sure that your baby is healthy.  If car seat crying is something new, and your baby has been particularly fussy at home, too, your baby may have an ear infection or other illness. A visit to the doctor is in order.

Bring the car seat in the house and let your baby sit and play in it.  Once it becomes more familiar in the house, she may be happier to sit there in the car.

Keep a special box of soft, safe car toys that you’ll use only in the car. If these are interesting enough, they may hold her attention. (Avoid hard toys because they could cause injury in a quick stop.)

Tape or hang toys for viewing.  You can do this on the back of the seat that your baby is facing or string an array of lightweight toys from the ceiling using heavy tape and yarn. Place them just at arm’s reach so that your baby can bat at them from her seat. (Don’t use hard toys that could hurt your baby if they come loose in a quick stop.)

Make a car mobile.  Link a long row of plastic baby chains from one side of the backseat to the other. Clip soft, lightweight new toys onto the chain for each trip. Make sure they are secure and keep on eye on these so that they don’t become loose while you are driving.

Hang a made-for-baby poster on the back of the seat that faces your baby.  These are usually black, white, red and bold primary colors; some even have pockets so you can change the pictures. (Remember to do this, since changing the scenery is very helpful.)

Experiment with different types of music in the car.  Some babies enjoy lullabies or music tapes made especially for young children; others surprise you by calming down as soon as you play one of your favorites. Some babies enjoy hearing Mom or Dad sing, more than anything else! (For some reason, a rousing chorus of “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” has always been a good choice for us, even out of season!)

Try “white noise” in the car.  You can purchase CDs of soothing nature sounds or you can make a recording of your vacuum cleaner!

Practice with short, pleasant trips when your baby is in a good mood.  It helps if someone can sit near her and keep her entertained. A few good experiences may help set a new pattern.

Try a pacifier or teething toy.  When your baby has something to suck or chew on he may be happier. Just make sure it doesn’t present a choking hazard, and keep to small, soft toys.

Hang a mirror.  That way your baby can see you (and you can see your baby) while you are driving. Baby stores offer specialty mirrors made especially for this purpose. When in her seat, she may think that you’re not there, and just seeing your face will help her feel better.

Put up a sunshade in the window.  This can be helpful if you suspect that the sunshine in your baby’s face may be a problem. Use the window-stick-on types, and avoid any with hard pieces that could become dislodged in a quick stop.

Try to consolidate trips.  Trip-chaining is effective, especially if you avoid being in the car for long periods of time, and you don’t have many ins-and-outs.

Make sure your baby hasn’t outgrown her car seat.  If her legs are confined, or her belts are too tight, she my find her seat to be uncomfortable.

Try opening a window.  Fresh air and a nice breeze can be soothing.

If all else fails . . . take the bus!

Do-it-yourself baby car seat – something that will save lives

Contents:

  • 1 Why do we need car seats?
  • 2 Types of restraints
    • 2.1 Popular seat models
  • 3 Children and bicycles

Now almost every family has a car, sometimes even more than one. Unfortunately, the increase in the number of cars on the roads entails an increase in the frequency of accidents, in which the youngest passengers often become victims . Despite the warnings of the traffic police and the adopted laws that protect the health and life of children in the car, some parents still consider a child car seat an unnecessary attribute of the trip.

Why do we need car seats?

One of the most common arguments against buying a child restraint is the thought that mothers used to carry their children in their arms and a seat was overkill. This is a dangerous and false proposition. Yes, children used to be carried in their arms. But after all, the number of cars was many times less. The capabilities of the machines were not the same as they are now. It is unlikely that the “Cossack” or “Muscovite” could develop a speed of more than 60-70 km / h.

Safe for your child

The speed limit on highways is currently 90 km/h, but most drivers drive faster. If we take into account the laws of physics and calculate how the weight of the child that the mother holds with her hands during the accident will change, it becomes clear that she will not succeed in holding the child. For example: the weight of a one-year-old child is 10 kilograms. In a frontal collision at a speed of 40 km / h, it increases by about 35 times! Only a car seat can hold the baby in such a situation.

Parents often think that if they drive carefully, they are insured against serious accidents and they do not need a child seat.

This is also an error. Traffic on the roads is getting busier every year. It is also naive to believe that the owners of expensive foreign cars are out of the risk zone thanks to airbags. Only adults wearing seat belts are protected, this does not apply to children. Accident statistics knows many cases when a banal booster, a restraint for grown children, could save the life of a child in an inverted foreign car.

Some parents do not use a child car seat because the child is naughty and cries in it. Yes, children want to play, play pranks and look out the window from their mother’s knees. But in the event of an emergency, these pranks can end tragically.

Another reason to install a child restraint is that not a single traffic police officer who stopped the car for the purpose of checking will listen to the arguments of the parents if the child is not transported according to the rules. He will just issue a serious fine.

In addition to cars, there are other road users on the road who often neglect safety rules – cyclists. To transport a child on a bicycle, parents must install a special bicycle seat equipped with seat belts. When transporting, the child must wear a protective helmet.

Types of restraints

Types of restraints

Child restraint is purchased for the child according to their age, height and weight. On this basis, car seats are divided into several groups:

  • Group 0 – car seat in the form of a cradle for children from birth to six months. Installed sideways in the direction of travel. The weight of the child is up to 9 kilograms.
  • Group 0+ – usually this is a portable car seat. They can often be seen in the hands of young mothers – equipped with a special carrying handle, they are very convenient for transporting a child to a store or clinic. Suitable for children up to a year weighing up to 13 kilograms. The child rides backwards in it.
  • Group 0+/1. Pretty economical car seat. From birth to two or three years. The maximum weight of a child is 18 kilograms. A prerequisite is that the chair must be able to be installed against the direction of travel. In children under one year old, the neck muscles are still very weak, it is difficult for them to hold the weight of a rather large head. Therefore, the chair for their transportation must be installed backwards, otherwise fatal injuries are possible in an accident (up to hidden decapitation).
  • Group 1 – for children 1-4 years old, 9 – 18 kg. The car seat is installed in the direction of travel.

  • Group 1/2/3 – a car seat that holds the child with standard seat belts. Adjustable headrest and armrests allow you to change the configuration, adjusting the device to the height of the child. For children 1-12 years old.
  • Group 2/3. For children 3 – 12 years old weighing 15 – 36 kg. The chair is placed in the direction of travel. Boosters can also be included in this group.

Booster – child restraint, seat with belt slots. Some parents use various do-it-yourself pads instead of a booster:

  • chair seats,
  • ottomans,
  • pillows.

This is wrong, because only a special child restraint guides the seat belt correctly and protects against chest injuries during hard braking.

Popular chair models

The customer is now offered a variety of car seats, from the very expensive to the budget.

Popular models of armchairs

It would seem that here is an armchair – one for 10 thousand, the second for one and a half. Why overpay? It is not that simple. The main way to evaluate a restraint is to conduct crash tests. The higher the score, the better the car seat. Our “Mishutki” and “Pandas” are cheap, but these chairs have not passed any tests. They only help to fix the child and prevent him from falling out of the seat in the event of a collision. Foreign analogues in this regard are much more reliable.

The best crash test scores currently available from firms:

  • Romer,
  • Recaro,
  • Britax

  • ,
  • Cybex,
  • Maxi Cosi,
  • Konkord,
  • Kiddy.

Britax-Romer First Class plus. Armchair group 0+/1. A special soft pad for babies allows the youngest passengers to travel in comfort. The chair is installed for babies against the direction of movement, upon reaching one year of age and weighing more than 9kg – in the direction of travel. It has two tilt positions – vertically and reclining. The chair is equipped with reliable seat belts, protected from side impact. Safety standard ECE R44/04. This car seat is a great option for those who don’t need a carrycot.

Maxi Cosi Cabrio Fix. Car seat 0+, for children up to 12-15 months. Safety standard ECE R 44/04. A very comfortable and lightweight portable car seat weighing only 3.5 kilograms has three-point seat belts, a removable headrest, and enlarged sides. The sun visor, if necessary, can be straightened and the baby will be protected from rain or sunlight. A convenient handle will allow mom to carry a sleeping child without any problems without taking it out of the chair. This chair is a great solution for mobile mothers.

Children and bicycles

To transport a child as a passenger, the bicycle must be equipped with a child restraint – a bicycle seat. No matter how great the temptation to put the child on the frame in front of you or on the trunk, you must remember about possible accidents that can be fatal. A bicycle seat will help to avoid problems.

A wide range of products is now available for enthusiastic cyclists and their children. The bike seat is made of durable plastic, mounted either on the seat frame or on the frame in front of the cyclist. Almost any holding device of this kind can be fixed by the owner with his own hands with the help of tools or even without them.

The seat is selected individually for each child. You can purchase a universal children’s bike seat, which will be adjusted according to the growth of the baby, but then you need to remember – any device has its own strength limit. Fixings and structural integrity should be checked regularly.

Also read about how to make a children’s chair for your baby with your own hands.

The child seat must protect the child well when falling and when turning. Particular attention should be paid to the protection of the legs – when driving, the child’s legs should not get between the spokes or under the wheel. To do this, the bike seat has side plastic sinuses that cover the wheels of the bike. When going for a walk, you need to take care of helmets – this is a mandatory requirement for transporting children. The bike seat is equipped with seat belts, but in the event of a fall, this will not protect the child’s head from injury.

Child restraint – bicycle seat

Foreign manufacturers offer a relatively new child restraint for our compatriots – a bicycle trailer. A special trailer for the child, clinging to the parent’s bike. An interesting option for walking through quiet parks and alleys, but completely unsuitable for traveling around the city. Our motorists may simply not notice the trailer, so for trips through busy roads it is better to use a more familiar bike seat.

Child does not want to sit in a car seat: what to do

What should I do if my child does not want to sit in a car seat? Tears, screams, hysteria – this is a real test of strength for parents. When driving with a screaming child in a car is absolutely not an option, you will have to “make friends” with a baby with a child car seat.

Baby, child car seat, car ride and no tears or tantrums. There are parents for whom this task was solved simply. But many are faced with the problem that their beloved child begins to act up and even throw a tantrum. How to be in such a situation? Refuse the car seat or insist on your own? Understand the reason why the baby is naughty while traveling in a car, and eliminate it? Find a way to entertain the baby? Let’s sort it out in order.

First, it happens. Children can be capricious for a variety of reasons: from unwillingness to sit in one place for a long time to the banal, which is uncomfortable for the baby. This is an adult who can say or correct the situation, and the only way for a child to communicate is crying.

When a baby starts acting up, crying and asking to be held, it is difficult for parents to keep calm. And at this moment, another level of danger arises: parents begin to be distracted, nervous, make mistakes, which increases the risk of an accident.

Therefore, if this is the first time you are faced with the question of how to accustom your baby to a car seat, then remember:

  • A child cannot ride in a car without a child car seat. Dot.
  • The sooner you start to carry the crumbs in the car seat, the faster the child will get used to it and the less likely it is to have tantrums.
  • Choose and install the correct child car seat in your car.
  • Think about baby’s comfort: what accessories, toys, food, drinks to take on a trip and how to entertain the child.

There can be no compromise or alternative. In no case should parents make concessions to the child, on the contrary, your task is to make it clear to the baby that he has no other options than to ride in a chair. Be patient and do not give up, because children understand and manipulate this well.

What excuses should parents forget about? “We will drive slowly and carefully”, “I’m only going to the store and back”, “it’s uncomfortable for the child”, “I’ll hold it in my arms” – these are not options for solving the problem.

The only way to make your trip or journey safe for your child is to buy a child car seat. Without options and conditions. It is strictly not recommended to take the baby out of the seat during the trip.

How dangerous it is and how much the parents risk is clearly demonstrated by crash tests.

Babies who ride in a car seat from birth are less capricious and calmly endure such trips. Children from the age of one are very nervous and can throw a real tantrum when they first go on a trip in a car seat.

What psychologists say

For a child, trains in a car are discomfort. The baby is limited in movement, the body has to adapt to the temperature and lighting of the cabin, and this is difficult for him. Hence crying, the most accessible way for a child to “tell” adults about physical or mental discomfort.

Parent’s task: to explain to the child in a calm and confident voice that the trip is interesting, you will make stops. If the child cries a lot and is naughty, then stop, get out of the car and calm the baby. You can walk a little, and then fasten it back into the seat – and keep moving.

There are many variants of such behavior, but there are two main reasons: the child is uncomfortable or bored . One does not exclude the other, so parents have to solve a difficult task. But the solution found will please and trips with a screaming child will remain in the past.

Making your child’s journey comfortable

Did you know that child car seats vary in terms of comfort? It only at first glance seems that the materials and design are similar, but in reality it turns out that this is not the case. The child car seat must be appropriate for the age and build of the child. If the baby is cramped, the belts are crushing or it is uncomfortable to sit with the back tilt set, then, of course, he will begin to act up.

Make sure your child is comfortable in the car seat. Watch our video for helpful tips on choosing a car seat for your child.

How to choose a child car seat

If you plan to go on long trips with your child often, it is better to choose a car seat with the ability to tilt the back. It will be more comfortable for the baby to sleep in it, while the car seat will remain a safe device for him, because the manufacturer has thought through and provided for everything.

Have you bought a new child car seat? Let your baby get used to it: put it in the room and let it explore the purchase. Tell your child that he now has his own cozy (beautiful, comfortable, new) car seat. If the baby himself wants to sit in it, then consider that you managed to “make friends” with the child with a child car seat.

We are sure that we chose the right car seat for the baby and the little passenger even liked the purchase – let’s look further. Surrounding space or how comfortable is the child in the car?

Is it hot or cold for the child, how does the place where the car seat is installed affect him, is the sun shining in his eyes, can the child reach for toys, bottles, pacifiers by himself? And these are not trifles, but the real reasons why the child begins to cry.

The issue of hot/cold is solved not only with the help of options in the car itself, which help to regulate the temperature in the cabin. In winter, do not wrap the child in a car seat: warm up the air, take off outerwear and shoes, and if the baby falls asleep, it is better to put on a cotton blanket. Of course, the child will cry if he is hot.

In summer, protect your baby from sunstroke. To do this, you can purchase a sunshade for the side window or put a sun visor on the infant car seat. For example, side window blind Hauck Cloud Me 2 or large rear window blind Hauck Cloud Me will protect your baby from bright sunlight.

Some manufacturers such as Britax-Romer and Recaro also offer summer covers and visors for child car seats. Ask what accessories for child car seats are and perhaps among them there is a simple solution for you. Like this handy sun cover for car seat Hauck Cool Me.

It will not allow the surface of the child car seat to overheat, which means that the baby will not be hot in it. It will also protect the car seat from dust and fading, which is just perfect in situations where the car seat is constantly in the cabin.

Child car seat installation location. The safest space is in the back seat of the car. But what if you have to drive alone with a baby? Strap the baby in the back and get nervous, constantly looking back?

If your car seat can be placed in the front seat (it literally has this option), then place the baby nearby. But is mandatory (!) :

  1. turn off the passenger airbag,
  2. move the car’s front seat as far back as possible,
  3. correctly install the child car seat so that the child’s back is in the direction of travel.

And you will have happiness instead of tears.

At arm’s length: can the baby reach the toy, pacifier or bottle by itself? Tears cannot be avoided if the baby has dropped his favorite toy, lost his pacifier, and is thirsty. There are two options: either you stop every time, or organize the space.

To do this, you can buy a hanging toy for a car seat, and attach a large soft toy next to it so that the baby travels with his friend. Also useful accessories will be an organizer, a game table and an additional rear-view mirror.

The organizer holds: wet wipes, a bib or a pack of Tommee Tippee disposable bibs, a spare pacifier with a clip, small toys.

How to keep your little one entertained while traveling

Your child should associate being in a car seat with something enjoyable. But how to do that? There are options, and believe me, there are more than two of them.

Gadgets. Fix the device and turn on the child’s favorite cartoon, fairy tale, music.

Toys. Rattles, soft toys, picture book, baby steering wheel, finger play set, interactive toys, etc. (preferably without component parts that will fall to the floor).

Games. Communicate with the child, show interesting objects outside the window, comment on what is happening, read a fairy tale, play an analogue of the game of “cities”, replacing them with animals.

Creativity. Kids love to draw so use it. Take pencils, felt-tip pens, an album, coloring books with you on a trip. You can give your child a task: draw what he likes or remembers most of all during the trip.

Promotion. Praise the child if the child behaved well on the trip. As an encouragement, you can even come up with a prize, the baby will definitely like it. What it will be is up to you.

Sleep. It’s all yours, but seriously, try to plan a trip, adjusting it to the child’s usual sleep time.

Stops. Be sure to include them in your travel schedule so that your child can get some fresh air. Be active for 10-15 minutes before continuing your trip. You need to stop at least every 2 hours.

Child crying in the car: parents’ experience

In their feedback, parents share their experience of how they managed to cope with the child’s tantrums while traveling. And, although every situation is different, there are some useful ideas for making friends with a child car seat. What helped them?

Svetlana, son 1 year 8 months: “We bought our first car seat at 2 months. At first, the son whimpered, but quickly fell asleep and was fine. Recently changed the car seat, a couple of times there were tantrums. I bought an additional safety mirror, attached to the headrest so that he could see me. More than once rescued a flashlight, he likes to click. Of the toys, our favorites are the singing microphone and the learning laptop. We go often, rarely naughty.

Marina, son 3.5 years old: “We were given a car table, and this is the second useful thing after a car seat. we travel from birth and often, we used to take a bunch of musical toys with us, there was a steering wheel, and now we have a table for all sorts of entertainment. On the road, the most convenient thing.

Polina, daughter 2 years 3 months: “We always take water and compote with us, something to chew on. Without it in any way, it is already checked up. I try to leave by the time of sleep, in case of hysteria, a tablet with cartoons.

Dasha, son 1 year 10 months old: “We had a car seat, we didn’t use it often, so there were no tears. And as we switched to a large car seat, then on the very first trip I yelled without ceasing. I thought that it was pure manipulation, I tried different things, but it turned out that he did not like the semi-lying position! And all of a sudden everything was fine.

Xenia, daughter, 4 years old: “We had a nightmare period. Constant op, I’m hungry, I’m thirsty. She threw toys on the floor, was capricious without end. On one of the trips, patience snapped, I asked my husband to stop the car and I moved to the front seat. Daughter was surprised and calmly began to look out the window. The tantrums have stopped.”

how to make children’s summer safe? / News of the Society of Krasnoyarsk and the Krasnoyarsk Territory / Newslab.Ru

Talk about child safety begins long before the birth of a child and does not stop after his birth. Parents need to foresee everything – from a comfortable ride in a car to a walk in the city park and forest paths. We decided to talk about several aspects of child safety to make it easier for you to live with little fidgets this summer.

If you are going on a road trip with the whole family in the summer, you need to take special care of the little crew members. A child restraint, in accordance with Article 22.9 of the SDA, is mandatory for every child – no one wants to pay a fine for violating traffic rules, and in unexpected situations on the road this element can really save a life. “Other means” – an alternative to child seats (fests) – are gradually becoming a thing of the past: they have not yet been banned in the back seats, but the sale has already been limited.

How to choose a child seat? First, pay attention to the manufacturer. Europeans know their business best (Britax Römer, Cybex, STM, Heyner and others) – almost every model on the Internet can be found with crash tests and environmental impact assessment results confirming the safety of materials for a child’s health. Car seats of the middle price category (Happy Baby) and very inexpensive ones (Liko Baby, Siger) are very popular, the quality of which is confirmed by safety certificates.

Carrying a child in a child car seat is required up to 12 years old , therefore, from the moment of birth, parents will have to make a purchase at least three times: a car seat, a universal car seat for children from one year to 9-10 years old, and, finally, a booster – a holding device that lifts a small passenger to the level of an adult, so that the car seat belt fits.

“It is also important to pay attention to the fastening of the chair. For those children who cannot yet be fastened with a car belt, we recommend using car seats with the Isofix system – special metal clips in the car seat body, which allow you to more securely fix the child seat in the car and reduce the likelihood of installation errors to a minimum (up to 75% of car seats are installed incorrectly ). Do not forget to make sure that your vehicle model is equipped with this system. Children from one meter tall are fixed in a car seat with the help of a regular car seat belt and the presence of the Isofix system in this case is not so important, ”the Joy For Kids specialized car seat store in Krasnoyarsk said.

Summer is the time for long family walks, during which it is important not to forget about the comfort of children’s feet. In this case, properly selected orthopedic shoes and other almost magical means come to the rescue.

The first is individual orthopedic insoles of the Pedcad brand, which are made in Krasnoyarsk on modern equipment in the Medinstal orthopedic salon. An insole for a child is selected taking into account the structure of his foot, weight, defects, spinal health and other characteristics, creating a 3D model of the product. A special scanner “takes off” both feet in a few seconds, and after a while you get insoles in which your child (or you, as Pedcad insoles are also made for adults) will feel comfortable even on the longest walk, trip or hike .

Second – children’s orthopedic shoes . Its design contains details designed to correct foot deformities – a hard back, a heel with an elongated inner edge, arch lining, etc. Of course, it is far from a fact that your child has flat feet (a specialist should make a diagnosis), but you can do test – apply a fat cream on the feet, put the child on a sheet of colored paper. The larger the contact area of the foot with the leaf, the higher the chances that flat feet still exist.

“In MedinStal Orthopedic Salon you can buy TWIKI orthopedic shoes. Its design contains the necessary complex details, and we paid special attention to the materials – these are genuine leather of high elasticity, rich colors, the work of designers, author’s applications. These shoes are lighter than traditional heavy orthopedic boots. By the way, sometimes children walk awkwardly, not only due to flat feet, but also simply because the shoes are heavy, ”say the specialists of the Medinstal orthopedic salon.

Third – anti-varus shoes brand Orthoboom. Its main function is abduction of the foot, that is, bringing its front part into a straight position. Such shoes are necessary for congenital clubfoot of varying degrees, varus deformity of the foot and other unpleasant diagnoses that can seriously affect the health of the baby in the future. The special design of shoes and high-quality materials distinguish such shoes from other orthopedic products, in addition, individual orthopedic insoles, which we wrote about above, can be placed inside Orthoboom shoes.

Finally, for the prevention of flat feet and other foot diseases, experts advise getting a special massage mat ORTO, made in the form of puzzles. You can put them in the children’s room or in the yard – playing on the surface of the rug, the child will actually be on a foot massage session. Do I need to explain to parents how important this is?

Summer adventures are full of dangers for your child. One of them is pincers , which today can also be found in the city. The only effective remedy for tick-borne encephalitis today is vaccination. It must be done in several stages: the first time – in the fall, then – in the spring, and after – once a year in the spring, then once every third year in the spring. Any child under the age of 18 in Krasnoyarsk can be vaccinated for free in the vaccination rooms of the city’s polyclinics.
