Summer School Themes – School’s Not Out!

Summer used to be a long period away from school but for those who didn’t get the break, summer school usually focused on make-up work.

Make-up work was schoolwork not mastered during the regular school year. Then schools began to extend the school year.

This was followed by the addition of interesting classes to the summer school program. Finally, schools began to offer creative programs to occupy children’s time while school was not in regular session.

At that point, it became helpful and “necessary” to adopt a school theme that conveyed the full agenda of the summer school program. One goal was to overcome old ideas about summer learning and send a new message that would capture the attention of parents and students.

Summer School Themes – No Time to be Bored

Remember when we were young? Summers were long and sweet… but if you think back… and what some choose to forget as adults… they eventually became boring. No one really wanted to admit it but many were glad when summer was over and school started again. Remember counting down the days and weekends? Making sure your school clothes were ready? Could you still wake up early enough?

The first day back was always especially exciting !

You could see all your friends and find out what they had done over the summer. Where did they go, who did they see, what did they do? What new rumors could be verified. Any new boyfriends, girlfriends etc ?

The mind is meant to be occupied, not idle. School themes today reflect the increasing sophistication of students. Children learn things in the third grade that used to be taught in Junior High.

Having endless hours with nothing to do is a formula for trouble. Summer themes reflect the variety of school programs and projects now conducted during summer months.

Summer School 2023

July 29, 2022 “Press-hut”

On July 26, the second cycle of the “Summer School” ended, and with it the programs of five workshops ended: Education, Test, “105th element” , Good deeds and “Translation and localization”. We talked to the directors of the workshops and found out how the programs at the Summer School went.

Maria Antonova, Director of Good Deeds Workshop

How was your program?

This year we had a short program of two cycles. Initially, we wanted to have two separate modules – burnout prevention, fundraising and promotion. But when we started to draw up a schedule, we realized that we could not build a schedule so that teachers would come on the right days. So we mixed both programs. The concept of the workshop only benefited from this, because in general, both topics were interesting for all the participants, just for some, one of the two was a priority. But in the end, everyone listened to both topics and was satisfied.

One of the final lectures was a seminar by Dasha Baibakova, head of the Moscow Nochlezhka. The workshop participants wrote the project strategy on the go. They could choose the level at which they would like to implement it: it could be the level of the company, the level of the team, or their personal level. All our participants are employees of NGOs, so it was convenient and easy for them to apply the knowledge that the teachers gave them.

At first they said that it would be better to hear about strategy and planning at the beginning, but then time passed, and on the contrary, they were glad that they were able to listen about strategy and planning, taking into account what they had already listened to in the workshop and shared what they that almost colleagues began to send all their notes.

Everyone was satisfied, and this is very nice. I always worry that we won’t squeeze it anyway and there will be few (lectures in the program – approx. Press hut) , or, on the contrary, we will press it, and everyone will remain and simply at some stage stop perceiving information. But somehow everything worked out smoothly for us, and the participants leave, on the one hand, filled, but not burned out.

Have you done any projects?

We have abandoned projects. Initially, on one of the final days, we had pairs for pitching, so that each participant could present some kind of project for their place of work based on the knowledge they received. But the program, despite the fact that it was not very dense, but rich, still tired them a little. Plus, the participants could work on their project on the go at almost every lesson and immediately talk about the results of their work. So in essence, if they pitched, they would retell everything again.

So we decided that we would not have pitches, we would not do presentations or other packaging for what we had done. We agreed that in a few months we will meet in zoom, because we mainly have participants from St. Petersburg, and discuss what has changed in their lives and work in order to measure the results.

What impressed you during these two cycles?

The participants really liked how one of our co-directors Katya Korovkina took them to meditate in a clearing outside the camp. Everyone was also very impressed with the fact that we immediately prepared breakfast the next morning upon arrival.

Alexander Verkheev, Scientific Supervisor of the Physics Workshop “Element 105”

Please tell us about your program.

The aim of the program was to familiarize the children with the main research being carried out at JINR. Our workshop is held on the subject of JINR, we are held on their base. Therefore, we presented lectures on the main areas of research of the Institute. We also took the guys on an excursion so that they could see our basic installations, accelerators, and detectors.

That is, the guys had the opportunity to see the current state of the experimental base of physical installations in our country.

Did you do any projects?

It was difficult to make the project, because we had guys from different fields of science: physicists, chemists, engineers. Therefore, as a project work, there was a presentation at a scientific seminar, at which the guys presented either their research or made reports on the articles that they listened to.

What is the main result of your workshop?

I hope the guys have broadened their horizons, considered the surrounding areas. Physicists met chemists, chemists learned something about physicists. That is, the guys received new information, and then we’ll see how they apply it.

Was there a memorable moment in the program?

The guys asked questions to each lecturer. We did not have lectures without questions, sometimes it was difficult to take lecturers from classes. It impressed me personally that there was a lot of interest.

Sofia Nekrasova, Test Workshop Director

How are you?

Everything is fine with us, Testovaya returned to the banks of the Volga, as she once did three years ago. Now for the fourth time, for two years our program was held online, it was very cool and interesting. But when we arrived at the Volga, we realized that this is the Test Workshop that should be, and only in this way is it a real Test Workshop, and not some kind of fake or surrogate.

How is the end of the cycle?

We had three defenses, two training and one final. We have 10 great projects. The topics are completely different: these are the cohesion of athletes, escapism, urbanism, a test questionnaire for clients after the first meeting with a psychotherapist, UX tests. In general, a lot of things. Until recently, I could not imagine that in just 9 days, questionnaires and tests were born from some ideas, which were compiled according to all the rules that can already be put into testing, you can do research on them. They are very different from the tests “What kind of Winx fairy are you?” or “Watermelon or melon?” Everything is developed according to the rules, according to scientific methods, within the framework of psychometrics.

The most wonderful experience, and I’m sad to talk about it, because today is the last day and I’m leaving. When I woke up, I realized that there was a big day ahead, because both the defense and the fire, and I realized that tomorrow I would not see either the guys or the participants. And I’m already so used to them, so attached. You already know who needs to be woken up better, who is the first in line to the dining room, who works at night, and who works in the morning. I was struck by the level of motivation and awareness, because they worked at night and devoted all their free time to developing tests.

Next year there will be many improvements. The main problem this season was that the organizational part was on me. It was at the “Summer School” itself, that is, the girls who helped me, they were responsible for the participants, their projects, but it was precisely such economic and administrative issues that were on me.

Plus, since I was an online director, I had a crazy hyper-responsibility in the first days, and I could not let go of the situation. And if I didn’t let her go, it would be much worse for me, because you worry about everyone. At the beginning, the mechanism of understanding that people are all adults, everyone understands perfectly why they came, and they themselves have internal motivation, has not yet been worked out. You are trying to control everything, to be responsible for everything. And it’s very hard.

Next year I will have people who will be at the Summer School itself, and we will do it together. There were problems with the fact that the teachers left, and we had some lectures online, and it’s difficult with the internet here.

When I told our participants that LSH is my vacation and I won’t have any more vacation, and I spent my entire vacation here, they said that they couldn’t do it, because you need to rest during your vacation.

But I understand that such a vacation was the only one possible for me, because this is such an unrealistic switch, this inclusion in another life, in another reality in which we are all free, we do not wear masks, we do not try to seem better than we are actually exist. Here all our true traits are manifested, which we suppress in society in order to avoid situations that are not expected of us. It’s great that somewhere you can be yourself and not be afraid that you will be judged or misunderstood. And it’s so beautiful that I really don’t want to leave, but, as we know, we all left, we all stayed here.

Yury Romanov, director of the workshop “Education”

The ninth season of the workshop “Education”. In fact, the eighth one, there was no workshop in 2020. It was nice to be back in the camp on the Volga. Cooking again, washing dishes, working in our usual fifth building. The workshop turned out to be very warm and kind. Saying goodbye, we talked about future meetings. Petersburg, Moscow, online, maybe somewhere else. They hugged and said nice things.

There were three modules. Educational Journalism wrote texts and discussed the fate of education. We will read some of these texts shortly. The First Call telegram channel, which was born after the 2021 workshop, has more authors. The participants gained experience in working with texts and communicating with excellent journalists. The program was coordinated by last year’s participants Lena Zubareva and Anya Sergeeva, it was their debut as a coordinator.

Teenage School designed a good school for teenagers. One that you would like to study. The final projects of the participants range from researching problems to thinking through the idea of transforming the space of an old factory into a school. We thought about how to make the school human, looked at the experience of other schools. Yury Kolov played a unifying and guiding role, many thanks to Yury Plotnikov, participant of the “Education” last year and director of PsychO this year, and everyone who had a hand in it.

During the Media Literacy module, we thought about how to involve schoolchildren (and adults) in critical thinking and checking information. The initial impetus was given by the lectures of Ekaterina Zvereva and the thoughts of Grigory Tarasevich, and the result was the development for courses on what to do if “someone is wrong on the Internet” and it is not clear whether one or another publication can be trusted.

I think it was good. Toward the end, they held a small open-space to exchange wisdom between the participants, in the middle they went to the Volga to fry sausages, in the second cycle they finally restored the tradition of playing hat in the evenings, and they also watched films, sang and celebrated two birthdays. And there was a playback for LSH performed by the studio where I play.

And we are also very grateful and grateful to Alexei Zhabin, Ekaterina Remorenko, Alexei Shmelev, Anastasia Fedorova, Anna Petrova, Alina Gilmutdinova and many others.

Anton Akopov, director of the translation and localization workshop

Our workshop lasted seven days – one day off, six working days: four days of lectures, two more – practical work. The workshop was a success. We talked about the specifics of localization and translation of video games, so the materials are directed specifically in this direction, although there is also a general theory. There were a couple of master classes, for example, on the fight against tracing – how to create natural living text without trying to copy the syntactic structure of the material.

We have participants with different backgrounds: those who are just starting, who are studying or have recently completed their education, and those who already work in this field, but have not worked in video games or are interested in gaining more professional experience.

The last two days are devoted to practical work. We were translating an old game from the early 2000s. It was a classic horror film that was never officially translated. It contained 30 thousand words, we divided this volume among 18 participants. Before that, we taught them how to use special applications, tools that we use ourselves. This game was translated during the day.

The next day we collected the translation, put it into the game, and looked at what happened. Part of the game was completed. The translation was not problem-free, but that’s to be expected. Many participants do not have much experience, time. But it was a useful practical experience. The participants saw firsthand what localization is like, what video games are like. We specially selected a game with interesting text: there were a lot of dialogues, riddles, quests, so the task was more interesting than a simple mobile game. Everything was successful.

I am sure that we will continue to make a workshop with pleasure, God forbid such an opportunity remains. In general, we have a program worked out for 3-4 years, but perhaps next year we will add something.

What do you remember the most?

It is difficult to single out something in particular.

In general, the impressions are very bright after a long break, so this whole week has been an unceasing bright flash for me.
