How much does a software engineer make and spend at Google | by Nodir Nazarov

and during how much it cost them to study, move to the states and shared their own monthly spending package.

Kapital.uz continues heading “Personal finance” , in which we tell how much money is earned and how representatives of various professions and spheres in Uzbekistan manage their funds. The next characters are Nodir Nazarov and Farrukh Khabibullaev , a software engineer from Uzbekistan working for Google.

I received a bachelor’s degree from the Karshi branch of the Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT), then studied at the master’s program at Yeungnam University in South Korea, at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies. I entered a university in Korea on a grant study, paying only for a plane ticket for about $600 and for the first month’s accommodation $400 until received a scholarship. Later, I received another Master’s degree in Computer Science from MIU (Maharishi International University, ed ) in the USA. Paid $90,031 $35,000 $90,032 for tuition.

In 2009, after graduating from a bachelor’s degree, he worked as a programmer at the Uzbek-Korean Information Technology Research Center. Worked on the OpenDRIM project for six months and earned about $200 per month. The main goal of OpenDRIM is the development of technologies, “information management and resource allocation”, development environments based on CIM / WBEM DMTF standards. At that time, we often had Korean students at IT conferences. Then we exchanged experiences, thoughts, and I was impressed by their educational system. And so, I became interested in studying in Korea.

I remember dreaming one night that I was in New York. At school we had an American teacher and I was very curious to see life abroad, in particular the USA. Get to know their culture, traditions and history. With my small budget at the time, I couldn’t afford to go to study in the states, but I was happy that I entered a Korean university free of charge. After graduating from a master’s program in South Korea, I applied and entered graduate school (PhD) at several educational institutions at once – in South Korea and Turkey. At the same time, he enrolled in a master’s program in the USA, then the choice stopped at a master’s program at MIU USA and refused both postgraduate scholarships.

Saved some money in South Korea and bought air ticket from Korea to USA for about $800 , paid $3200 for basic education. Lived in a university dormitory for 9 months and spent about $1000 there. After 9 months on campus, I started working and continued my education with online classes at the same time. I paid for the rest of the tuition in the amount of $32000 from my salary.

Living away from home was far from easy. There were days when we went to the university kitchen and ate almost nothing. The food was terrible, there was no meat, no fish, no eggs, no onions, no garlic, no spices. Passable food was pizza and a sandwich.

I left the hostel and searched for a job for three months. It was a rather difficult period because I had a minimum amount for subsistence and I still could not find a job.

My major at Yeungnam University was computer network security, but I wanted to become a software engineer and trained as a computer science profession in the USA. In total, it took me 7 years to study in the field of IT – 4 years in Uzbekistan, 2 years in Korea and a year in the USA. So I spent 7 years and over $40000 has not started working in the US yet.

In 2013, I got my first job at Micros-Retails. The company was acquired by Oracle in 2014 and I worked there until 2018. Here I worked on the development of a product for point of sale (POS) and on a web application for managing a POS system. My first salary was about $ $32 per hour before taxes.

I used to be a little afraid of working for the big tech companies in Silicon Valley. Assumed that it would be very difficult to pass an interview in these companies. When I did try, I managed to get an offer from eBay in 2019. I worked on the search team of a service that handles over 2 billion searches daily. eBay was my first step in Silicon Valley and I absolutely loved working there, but I wanted to work for an even better company. After two years, I decided to change jobs. I’ve been interviewed on Google, Facebook, Amazon and Dropbox. Fortunately, as a result, I received an offer from Google and joined the team two months ago.

Usually, I don’t even tell my close relatives about my salary, but today anyone can find almost any information on the Internet. Earnings vary by company, position, location, and experience. Check out levels.fyi. There you can select the specific company and position that interests you.

https://www. levels.fyi/company/Google/salaries/Software-Engineer/

The last column is the annual salary. Full compensation includes a regular salary, company shares and a bonus that is given only once for entering the company. This figure represents annual income before taxes. About 30-35% of the regular salary and share capital, more than 40% of the bonus are paid as tax. In addition, the company pays for part of the health insurance, pension contributions and many other benefits.

I can’t talk too much about Google office since the transfer just happened – at the moment, I’ve been working from home since last April. I’m on the Google Cloud Security team, developing tools and frameworks that speed up building, testing, and maintaining secure products. I participate in all stages of software development – planning, requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance.

Google is a potentially very good career path. There are programs designed for Google employees who want to move into a software developer position. You can also get promoted to manager, vice president, or even general manager. Everything depends on your efforts. My short term plan at Google is to become a stronger techie and move to a higher position within the company. There are usually two ways to move up the career ladder, one is to become a more experienced technical engineer and the other is to move into a management position.

Monthly expenses package. I live with my wife and two daughters in a three-room apartment. This is a townhouse – it has two bedrooms, a toilet and bath upstairs, and a living room, kitchen and toilet downstairs. There is a small backyard and community pool. I pay $2400 for rent, for all “communal” $200 . On average, we spend on food and groceries $800 per month, on purchases – about $200 . There are additional expenses such as car insurance, gasoline, internet and phone packages, health expenses, which add up to about $600 per month. My eldest daughter went to a private daycare last year for $90,031 $850, a month for half a day. The cost of a full day school is about $1200 per child. We plan to send both daughters to a private school next year, which will be an additional $2400 per month. Public schools are free if you want to save money. We spend about $200 per month on entertainment – this is a zoo, amusement parks, children’s museums, travel. In addition, I enrolled my children in several summer classes such as swimming, taekwondo, gymnastics and summer school. All together costs $2000 . If we need to go to Uzbekistan, then we will spend more than $ 4200 on a round trip ticket. I also bought a 2015 Toyota Corolla for $22,000 . In the future, I plan to purchase a minivan, which will cost from $35000 to $45000 .

In terms of savings, I invest $2000 monthly into a pension fund and $700 into health savings account. It is worth noting that the company also contributes.

I plan to work at Google for 2-3 years and then return to Uzbekistan. I have business plans when I return to my homeland, but now I can’t talk about it. In addition, I also want to work in the educational system, as this has always attracted me.

I am a citizen of Uzbekistan, a permanent resident (on a green card) of the USA. Came here on a student visa (F1) in 2012. After completing the training on campus, the university issued a CPT (Curricular Practical Training), which gives a work permit. I got a work visa (h2B) in 2014 and a green card in 2018 through Oracle.

I studied at the Faculty of Business Information Systems at Westminster International University in Tashkent from 2012-2016 and received a bachelor’s degree. Later, he studied mathematics and computer science in a master’s degree at the Maharishi University of Management, which is located in the state of Iowa in the USA from 2017 to 2019.

I spent an average of $90,031 $5,000 $90,032 a year to study at Westminster International University. After, at Maharishi University of Management, I spent about $55,000 .

Worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Tune Consulting in Uzbekistan from 2014 to 2016. Created a software and an Android application for JSC “Uzbekiston Temir Yollari” to sell tickets online. The salary was about 4 000 000 soums for a month (about $1300 at the exchange rate of the Central Bank of 2016).

When I finished my studies in Tashkent, had a great desire to work as a software engineer in an international company. I sent my resume to several companies located in the USA at once. More than 15 companies called me for an interview. From 10 I got job offers.

I chose the USA because there are many professional opportunities in this country. An even greater positive side for me was the fact that here you can work with professionals from different countries. Well, an added bonus is that I like the climate of San Francisco, it’s always warm here.

In the end, I decided to take a job at the biotech company Neopeutics, Inc, based in San Francisco, California. I was offered a very interesting research position where I could work with scientists.

Photo: from the personal archive of Farrukh Khabibullaev

The company is looking for medicines for various diseases. Scientists and researchers at the company work with algorithms and data at an extremely large scale, on the petabyte scale. I worked as a software engineer and created analytics and intelligence software that stores and processes these large datasets.

For example, the human DNA and genome can exceed 215 million gigabytes. If you want to store this data on your computer or perform any operations on this big data, you will not be able to. My team and I have developed software solutions and algorithms that efficiently, safely and reliably store and process such large data.

Such software is now called “Machine Learning” and “Artificial Intelligence” ( ed. ). The software I created has helped scientists and researchers make their research easier, faster, and more accurate.

When I moved to the states, I spent only $50 on gifts for my landlady. The company paid for my relocation and covered all my expenses for 1 month, as agreed in the contract. It was very easy for me to start life in the USA.

I worked as a software engineer for Neopeutics, Inc. for over a year before I was accepted to a graduate program in mathematics and computer science in Iowa.

At first it was mentally difficult: I lived in a different country with a completely different culture, the work was only in English, and I also had to learn American business etiquette. It was difficult, but everyone understood and supported me.

It seems to me that then the annual starting salary is for software engineers at my entry level was over $160,000 per year + bonuses.

I learned programming by myself, reading books on mathematics and computer science, watching videos on Youtube, and then working in a company and asking a lot of questions. When I started studying programming in 2012, there were very few software engineers in Tashkent, so it was difficult for me to find teachers or mentors. It took me over a year to start my first job in Tashkent when I was still a university student.

Here are some links and tutorials that have helped me to this day.

1. https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/

This website hosts all courses taught at MIT for free. There are bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. courses on this site for all departments, including mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, chemistry, economics, and even nuclear engineering. They are free and very high quality. Now I am studying a quantum physics course from this platform.

I worked as a software engineer for Amazon for a while, now I work for Google. I also received a job offer from Facebook, but turned them down because their products are not very interesting to me. At that time, I was offered to work in the Instagram team. To be honest, this application and the technology they use is not very interesting to me. I guess the reason is that I am already the generation that is not interested in this social network.

In order to get a job in these companies, I studied a lot of mathematics and computer science at the university and on my own. Before Google and Amazon, I worked as one of the early engineers at the cloud kitchen startup “Zume, Inc” and created software for robots and cobots. I have been building large scale software since the beginning.

At Amazon, I worked with over 100 engineers and managers on the Prime Video team. I have developed scalable and reliable web streaming services to support hundreds of millions of Amazon Prime Video subscribers and customers. In addition, he participated in the development of Fire OS and applications in Fire TV devices. At Amazon, engineers at my level earn more than $300,000 + more bonuses. I was also in this category.

At Google I work as a software engineer with about 200 engineers in total and 20 engineers on my own team on the Android Automotive OS team. I develop smart software and Android operating system for over 500 vehicle types including BMW, Fords, Chrysler and many more.

Many electronic devices run the Android operating system developed by Google, including phones, TVs, tablets, smartwatches, Google Assistant, and more. In my team, we design and build a car version of Android OS. For example, you have a car manufacturing company. If you want to make your cars smarter, you can use the version of Android OS developed by Google and my team.

Android OS software contains an ecosystem of other software, including Google Map, Navigator, Google Assistant, and more. If you are a software engineer and want to create an application for cars, our team will provide APIs, libraries and frameworks. Using the libraries, frameworks and APIs provided by Google and our team, you can create an application for any vehicle. I also partially work with a team that develops software for autonomous vehicles.
