Donda Academy: what do we know about Kanye West’s private Christian school and why does he need it
According to him, in the institution, children can become real geniuses, gaining practical skills, doing parkour and attending daily worship services. However, in the past few months, instead of rave reviews from the parents of students, the school administration has received only lawsuits from former teachers. Forbes Life tells how West’s private Christian school works and why teachers criticize it
Kanye West opened the private Christian school Donda Academy (originally Yeezy Christian Academy) in suburban Los Angeles in November 2021. The school is named after the rapper’s mother, Donda West, who died in 2007. She is also named after West’s tenth studio album, his creative agency, and the Nike Air Jordan VI, a sneaker designed specifically for the rapper, his close friends, and family. Before becoming her son’s manager, Donda West headed the Department of English, Communications, Media Arts and Theater at Chicago State University.
“Following an ethic of honesty and caring, Donda Academy prepares students to become leaders, thinkers and innovators of the next generation by providing them with a world-class education. It is based on a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes sustainability, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving,” the school’s mission is described on its official website. It also says that there are 10 students per teacher at Donda Academy, an average of less than 12 students per class, and applications for admission are accepted from parents of children of all ages – from preschoolers to high school students.
The cost of studying at Donda Academy is not indicated on the school website – it can be found out only after sending an application for training. Apply, as noted in the administration, “anyone can, regardless of financial situation.” In addition, financial aid and scholarships are available to some students “who qualify”. Donda Academy is currently accepting applications for the 2023/2024 academic year. There is no information about the teachers at the school on the website.

In September 2022, as a guest on the daily morning show Good Morning America, Kanye West revealed that his own children don’t attend Donda Academy because his ex-wife, influencer and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian, doesn’t agree with the choice of the rapper. In the same interview, West said that the school was designed to “give kids the tools they’ll need in a post-iPhone world” and that it had 82 students at the time.

“So many schools are set up to prepare kids for industries that no longer matter,” the musician said, noting that Donda Academy focuses on “practical skills” such as engineering, programming and farming. He added that the school has teachers who specialize in specific areas and can “really turn kids into geniuses.”
School for Future Leaders
“Every day, Donda Academy students learn the basics, grow and develop in their faith, and attend two extra classes,” the school’s website says. A typical student day, according to the administration, looks like this: a school-wide worship service, core classes in literature, math and science, lunch and a break, and then additional courses, including foreign languages, visual arts, cinema, choir or even parkour. In addition, the school hosts Sunday services at the end of each week, sometimes featuring members of the rapper’s Sunday Service choir.
Donda Academy promises on the website that children will be taught by “experienced teachers with an uncompromising passion for learning” who are “lifelong followers of Christ.” According to West’s longtime friend and producer Malik Yousef, who helped him create the school, the atmosphere of the church parish was created around Donda Academy not by chance: “Donda School is for parishioners, for visitors. I don’t think Kanye needs to tell the world what he’s doing to be under more scrutiny. People choose to bring their children to Donda Academy because of the sense of privacy, care, love, environment of health, prosperity, learning and focus on God.”

According to Yousef, students at Donda Academy can also take “unique programs” such as fashion, Japanese language, restorative justice, and freerunning, a parkour-like discipline that involves running over obstacles and performing acrobatic stunts. As a friend of the rapper notes, freerunning is the epitome of what Donda Academy stands for: “Kanye’s whole ideology is about freedom, and freerunning is a great way for kids to train and use their energy without feeling competitive.”

In addition to parkour and freerunning sports, students can join the Donda Doves basketball team, which plays in a private school league. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the club’s practices are frequented by celebrities and athletes, including NBA stars. To constantly replenish the team, the Donda Academy administration has hired professional recruiters who select potential players in regular schools across the country and invite them to Kanye West’s educational institution. Donda Doves basketball players often wear brand uniforms Balenciaga and Yeezy sneakers.
What school uniforms are worn outside of sports is known from Kanye West’s posts on social networks. In 2022, he posted on Instagram (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) photos of students wearing school uniforms consisting entirely of his designs for the Yeezy and Gap brands – baggy black T-shirts and sweatpants. A former Donda Academy employee later said that teachers and students at the school “are required to wear all black from head to toe,” adding that clothing must be produced or designed by Kanye West.
Slam Magazine previously reported that Kanye West’s personal chef sometimes serves student meals. An employee who worked with the school’s culinary team told Rolling Stone that “high-quality drinks based on coffee, tea and fruit” have been developed for children, parents and teachers. “Imagine a peeled chicory iced coffee with milk syrup,” the source described.
Learning Without Standards
In October 2022, Business Insider revealed that Donda Academy is registered with the California Department of Education as a kindergarten and school that students can attend through eighth grade—that is, it does not have special accreditation for teaching high school students. As the publication notes, the fact that Donda Academy has not received accreditation means that it does not meet state educational standards and norms for the competence of teaching staff and administration. Unaccredited schools are ineligible for public funding, and many colleges and universities do not recognize degrees issued by them.
According to Rolling Stone, West’s school costs $15,000 a year, with about half of the students receiving financial aid. At two similar religious private schools in the same area of the Los Angeles suburbs, tuition fees are equivalent to the cost of college education – from $ 21,000 to $ 37,500. Both schools are officially accredited.

Two sources connected to current Donda Academy students told Rolling Stone that parents must sign a confidentiality agreement in order for their children to attend school. Tamar Andrews, educational consultant for Donda Academy, confirmed in a comment to the publication that parents are being asked to sign some kind of “informal agreement” for enrollment.

In the fall of 2022, Brianna Campbell was the director of Donda Academy. Before heading the school, she worked as an actress, choir director, and vocal tutor from her own apartment, according to Business Insider. Associate Principal Allison Tidwell has been a tutor or teacher since 2012, and Donda Academy Athletic Program Director Shyla Scott was a basketball coach before signing with the school. The qualifications of the remaining 16 full-time teachers of Donda Academy, according to Rolling Stone, is unknown. According to the publication, two weeks before the start of the 2022/2023 school year, the school administration was looking for new employees, offering, for example, a preschool teacher $55,000 a year, and a teacher assistant $75,000 a year.
US private educational institutions are not required to disclose information about the sources of their budget, so the financial situation of Donda Academy is unclear. However, in September last year, Kanye West stated that against the backdrop of the success of his school in the future, he wants to open a whole new university – Donda University.
Unfinished Utopia
In October 2022, after the rapper’s repeated anti-Semitic remarks on social media and in interviews, a number of companies stopped working with Kanye West, including fashion brands adidas and Balenciaga, as well as American Vogue magazine. At the same time, the administration of Donda Academy sent an email to the parents of the students, stating that the school would be closed until the end of the 2022/2023 school year and would “start again” next year. However, a few hours later, school representatives sent a new message and announced that Donda Academy would suspend work for just a week. The school has continued to operate ever since, but has faced a string of lawsuits.

In April of this year, former Donda Academy employees Chekari Byers and Cecilia Haley filed a lawsuit against the rapper and the administration. They accused the school of violating state educational codes, racial discrimination against teachers, and wrongful termination. According to them, they were fired after they complained to the director of Donda Academy that the school did not provide students with the necessary educational services, personalized learning plans or additional testing in accordance with California law.
In addition, Byers and Haley said they were “the only black female teachers” at the school and were repeatedly discriminated against. Donda Academy, they said, repeatedly withheld their salaries based on race. According to them, the school does not have a full-time nurse and cleaners, since Kanye West allegedly “does not believe in cleaning products containing chemicals,” and students can only eat sushi for lunch. In addition, they allege that some Donda Academy students are “subjected to severe bullying” within the school, and teaching about the Holocaust in the classroom is prohibited.

In June, a third former teacher at Donda Academy, Timani Meeks, joined the Haley and Byers lawsuit. She claimed that when she alerted school officials to the many safety hazards to student health, including loose baseboards, they ignored her complaints. Meeks also stated that shortly after the parents of some students who visited her class and complained about the lack of textbooks, the school fired her without explanation. The plaintiffs called the Donda Academy in their statement “a dystopian institution designed to cater to all Kanye’s oddities.”
Later, another former employee, Isaiah Meadows, filed a lawsuit against the school. He stated that he was suspended and eventually fired for voicing concerns about the school’s infrastructure. According to a former teacher, Donda Academy had bad wiring that once caught fire, there was no hot water in the sinks and the septic tank in the sewer system was overflowing, and some rooms had windows without glass.

Former Kanye West Yeezy Christian Academy employee Isaiah Meadows claims she was fired in retaliation for reporting unsafe learning conditions. The Guardian writes about it.
Meadows filed a lawsuit against the rapper in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
She started working at a private Christian school as an assistant principal in 2020, earning $18.4k a month. According to Meadows, she was also promised help with rent, but was paid only for the first three months, and she herself was removed from her position after she voiced her concerns about the work of the educational institution.
Meadows stated that while working as an assistant principal, she notified the school authorities of numerous problems with the learning environment.
In the lawsuit, Meadows alleged that the school’s main classroom had no glass in the roof “because [Kanye West] said he didn’t like glass.” According to the recollections of a former school employee, water was poured into the classroom and caused a moldy smell.
Meadows also alleged in the lawsuit that poor electrical wiring at Yeezy Christian Academy caused “a fire that started near the student cafeteria. ” The school also had no hot water and had problems with the septic tank, which “overflowed every two days, causing a terrible smell.”
Yeezy Christian Academy tuition was $15,000 per year.
Previously, reported that the Kanye West scandal was mentioned in the final episode of Idol.
