Many immigrants are interested in working as a nurse in Canada. However, starting to study the information, it is difficult to find certain specifics. Is it possible to confirm a nursing diploma in Canada? How much will the training cost? What is the duration of the training? What positions and salaries can you expect? Julia Klimenko, Program Advisor at the popular Vancouver Medical College Stenberg College, gave us answers to all the most popular questions.

Julia, tell us briefly how to get a nursing education in Canada?

There are different types of nurses in Canada and there are three main levels of nursing.

• Licensed Practical Nurse – Diploma.
• Registered Nurse/ Registered Psychiatric Nurse – bachelor.
• Nurse Practitioner – master.

I want to say right away that I work with Licenced Practical Nursing (LPN) in British Columbia, therefore I answer in terms of LPN in this province, although for immigrants this is just the most convenient and fastest way to get a job as a nurse or nurse. There may be slightly different conditions for obtaining a license or enrolling in a study program in another province, you need to check with your local regulatory authority, as there is no all-Canadian registration and even moving from province to province, you will need to renew your license.

Is it possible to somehow confirm the Russian or Ukrainian diploma of a nurse in Canada and work experience as a nurse, or will everything have to start from scratch?

If you have a nursing degree, you can do The National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS). This process is long, expensive, and, what is most offensive, not always successful. I know many who lost at least a couple of years on this, although if you have the time and desire, you can try, of course. Most decide to just get a local education and be quiet.

Education from home is useful in any case, since in order to enter nursing in Canada, you need to at least finish school. You also need a list of subjects required for admission: mathematics, biology, English. When you come to Canada, do not forget to take all your diplomas so that you can evaluate the diploma later (ICES, WES). If they took these items at school or university, they can even be counted.

What do I need to apply to study nursing in Canada?

The most difficult moment in admission is probably the successful passing of English, because without an IELTS or CELBAN test you will not be accepted into the program, and if they are, then there is a risk of not getting a license if you fail the test, so be careful. Passed English and calm! The CELBAN test is best taken if you were a doctor or nurse before coming to Canada, as it will be more understandable to you, otherwise IELTS. What level is needed.

IELTS: Minimum score

• Listening 7.5
• Speaking 7
• Reading 6.5
• Writing 7

CELBAN:

• Listening – CLB 10
• Speaking – CLB 8
• Reading – CLB 8
• Writing – CLB 7

If you do not reach the desired level, then you can start with the Health Care Aid program or even Health Care Aid – ESL (an additional three months of English before the program itself). This profession is a great start and a very good base in order to become a nurse later. There is a lot of work in this area too, so if English is still weak, then try on HCA.

Mathematics and biology are also needed. You can take these courses at your local school (it’s free for residents and Canadians), you can also take these courses at the college you’re applying for (we have them for free), or you can just take the challenge exam. There are many options, the main thing is to do it! Upon admission to the program, they will check what you have and what you don’t have, and they will figure it out, prompt you.

Can a non-resident of Canada enter this kind of program?

Yes, non-residents can also apply for this program.

If your partner is already on the way to PR (so you don’t have to worry about a work permit later), then this is ideal, but I also know people who received a work permit after the program.

How many years does it take to study to become a nurse in Canada and what is the approximate cost?

In private colleges, education is more expensive than in public ones, but faster, better quality and there are no waiting lists of 2-3 years. At the college where I work, study as a licensed practical nurse for 74 weeks (about 1.5 years) and the tuition fee is $29.900. Another 3-4 thousand will be books, certificates, equipment and so on.

What are the next steps after graduating as a nurse in Canada?

As I wrote at the beginning of the article, there is an opportunity to get a bachelor’s or even a master’s degree later. There are a lot of opportunities for growth, but many are satisfied with this first step. In our college, everyone finds a job within 6 months or earlier. With searches, resumes, interviews, they help, of course. Many are hired after the practice, because it’s like a long job interview, this is a great chance to prove yourself.

What is the starting salary for nurses in Canada and what are the career options?

The average starting salary is $26 per hour, but there are a few caveats. You will always start as casual, that is, on call. It seems to be not very convenient, but you can take a shift for yourself, you can not take it, that is, you are not tied to a place for 40-50 hours a week. And you can also work for several health authorities (clinics and hospitals) and you will have at least 80-9 jobs0 hours per week. While you are casual, you do not yet have a pension and bonuses, so you are paid extra for this somewhere around 12%. If you work evenings, nights, weekends or holidays – again, they pay more. Does the state provide any additional bonuses and benefits for nurses?

You should not expect anything unusual from the state, but the employer usually takes care of his medical staff. Pension and benefits are the minimum package. If at the end of the program you go to work in underserved communities (areas where there is a shortage of nurses) for at least a year, then part or even the entire student loan can be forgiven, this is called the Loan Forgiveness Program.

Naturally, the work of such people is paid very well, even by Canadian standards. The junior medical staff here is divided into several levels, depending on the qualifications and on the set of procedures to which specialists of one level or another are allowed.

At the very bottom are specialists called Personal Support Worker ( PSW ). This is the entry level of the health worker hierarchy. They can be compared with orderlies in Ukraine. Their tasks include caring for the sick and performing a variety of operations that do not require special medical training. However, such employees have some medical knowledge and can provide skilled care to the sick.

Next come the nurses themselves. That is, junior medical workers who have special licenses for the right to work in their specialty. There are two main types of nurses in Canada today:

• Licensed Practical Nurse A nurse of a level who, in addition to caring for the sick, can administer most types of injections, dispense medications, measure blood pressure, and help complete primary medical records.
