Discovery Point: The Forefront of Child Care

Providing Child Care and Daycare Services for Infants to School-Aged Children

At Discovery Point, we take pride in being at the forefront of child care. Our goal is to redefine daycare for our families and the children in our care. About Us

WHAT’S OUR GOAL

East Dallas Developmental Center is a non-profit childcare center serving the East Dallas community for more than 30 years. Locally recognized for excellence in childcare, EDDC serves children six weeks of age through pre-school in a warm and loving environment with low teacher/child ratios and experienced staff. Children at EDDC develop a strong social, cognitive, emotional and physical foundation for kindergarten and beyond.

EDDC is more than just a daycare. It’s a community of families and teachers supporting each other and forging life-long friendships. EDDC is not governed, subsidized or affiliated with any religious group or umbrella organization. As a result, each and every parent plays an important role in determining the success of the school. While parents are not required to participate in events and fundraisers to secure enrollment, participation is a critical part of the success of EDDC. Major fundraising and social events include the fall wine social, spring auction and numerous parent-hosted parties throughout the year. Parents can also get involved by attending the fall carnival, participating in parent work days to improve the school and serving on the Board or a Parent Group committee.

EDDC does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin.

Management

INFORMATION TO HELP YOU

Founded in 1980 by Dr. Joanne Everts and Dr. Eric Albers, EDDC initially served only infants and toddlers and later expanded to include a preschool program. In the fall of 1982, EDDC obtained 501(c)(3) status and to this day continues to be governed by a Board of Directors comprised of parents of children enrolled at EDDC. Day-to-day operations are managed by a paid director, Kathy Fields, and assistant director, Pam Beaty.

Kathy Fields initially joined EDDC in 1999 as an infant/toddler teacher and has served as the Director since May 2002. Prior to EDDC, she worked with toddlers for 13 years and was an assistant director for five years. She has an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Child Development and her Administrative Credential in Child Care (ECMI).

Kathy’s family consists of her sons Jarrett and Jacob as well as Roxy the dog, Minga the cat and Blackjack the rabbit.

Why is Kathy in the child care business? She loves being part of a child’s growth, where she can love and nurture them. It has always been her goal to work closely with families in order to help each child reach their full potential while at EDDC.”

Pam Beaty has been with EDDC since 1985, serving as the Assistant Director since 2006 and dance teacher since 1985. During her tenure, she also spent eight years teaching three-year-olds and 10 years teaching pre-k. Her company, Pam’s Tiny Dancers, which taught dance to several child care centers in the DFW area, initially brought her to EDDC. Before child care, her career was in retail management, word processing, and office management in various fields. She holds an Associates Degree of Applied Sciences in Child Development and her Administrator Credential in Child Care (ECMI). She is a member of the National Honor Society- Phi Theta Kappa and pledged with Delta Zeta and Phi Kappa Alpha at North Texas University. Her dance training is with School of Dance Academy in Houston, Texie/Waterman/Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Dance School.

Her family consists of her husband James, daughter Lauren and son-in-law Zach. When not at work, she spends time with her dogs Gypsie, Stryder & River, horses Irish and Sierra, and other ranch critters.

Why does Pam work with children? “When you find something you do well and love doing it, what else is there to say?”

WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US

Enrolling in EDDC was the best decision I made. Not only did my daughter get a great head start in learning, but I met a community of involved, committed parents that I’m still close with today.Layla Bush

EDDC came highly recommended to us after we had our first child. Since then, our two children have attended EDDC from 6 months all the way through Pre-K. Without a doubt, the school has lived up to every expectation. From the school directors and teachers, environment and overall learning experience, our children have been developed by EDDC in a truly special and unique way.Mike Malphurs

The EDDC teachers prepared our kids for kindergarten beyond our expectations. Our daughter was reading at a second grade level when she entered Lakewood Elementary!” Jim Gillentine

Tours of the center are typically held October through May on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a. m. Space is limited to five families and must be reserved in advance by contacting Pam Beaty. Please include your child’s name, date of birth and desired start date. During the summer months, tours will only be offered if there is an opening in your child’s class level.

While openings for the infant rooms fill very quickly, EDDC often has openings for older children. The best way to find out current availability is to contact Pam Beaty via email or the form below with your child’s name, date of birth and desired start date. Pam can then review current enrollment and availability before getting back to you. Note that EDDC follows an August to August school year, so your child’s class level is based on his/her age as of September 1st. For example, if your daughter is three on September 1st, but will turn four in December, she would be in a Threes class.

Where to go with kids in Dallas

In addition to trips out of town, visits to museums, walks in parks and participation in master classes, there are other activities for children in Dallas. These include the Dallas World Aquarium and the hop-on hop-off tram tour.

Dallas World Aquarium

The Dallas World Aquarium has been operating in the West End since 1992. Here you can see not only fish, but also different animals. The expositions are divided by geographical regions – the island of Borneo, the Orinoco River, the foggy forest, the Mayan jungle, South Africa. They contain birds, fish, rodents, small marsupials, monkeys, anteaters, otters, lizards, turtles, frogs, crocodiles, sloths. The aquarium itself is located on the lower level and contains underwater inhabitants of the Solomon Islands, South Australia, Lord Howe Island, Palau, Fiji, New Guinea, British Columbia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Japan.

Hop-on hop-off tram tour

The hop-on hop-off system means that you can view objects at your own pace and continue on another sightseeing tram. Usually such tours are carried out on open-top double-decker buses, but in Dallas, streetcars serve as such transport. There are 14 stops on the route, including Dealey Plaza, Reunion Tower, Clyde Warren Park, Deep Ellum and others. Trams depart from Dealey Plaza every 90 minutes four times a day, starting at 10:45. The ticket is valid throughout the day.

Food for children in Dallas

In Dallas, as in all of Texas, Tex-Mex cuisine is common, which is characterized by the addition of a large amount of spices, mostly spicy. Deep-fried food is also very popular in the city. Therefore, when choosing dishes for children, you need to be careful and clarify the presence of pepper in their composition and the method of preparation. The easiest way is with local desserts, among which there are many pies and sweets made from bananas.

Banana Foster

Bananas Foster is a dessert made from bananas and vanilla ice cream. Bananas are caramelized with butter, cinnamon and cane sugar, then flambéed with rum and banana liqueur. During this process, all alcohol evaporates and this dish can be served to children. Whipped cream and nuts (walnuts, pecans, peanuts) are used as a decoration for the foster.

Pecan Pie

Pecan Pie is one of the official state symbols of Texas, along with the tree of the same name. A mass of pecans, sugar, corn syrup, butter, eggs, vanilla is laid out in a shortbread base. All this is baked in the oven and served in portions after cooling to room temperature. This is a traditional Thanksgiving dish.

Three Milk Pie

Three Milk Pie (Cinco Leches) came to Texas from Latin America. It is a vanilla biscuit soaked in three types of milk – whole, condensed and heavy cream. The best Three Milk Pie in Dallas is served at Mesero restaurant chain.
