9 grandma’s advice on caring for children that doctors ask you to forget about / AdMe
Researchers say that most modern grandparents do not update their knowledge of how to properly care for children during their lives. Guided solely by personal experience, the older generation often gives young parents recommendations that have long been recognized as outdated. And many of them are not safe.
At ADME , we have studied parenting forums and articles from practicing pediatricians to understand what irrelevant advice and statements most often hear moms and dads of newborns.
1. Without swaddling, the baby will be clubfoot

It used to be that it was necessary to swaddle newborns, because it helps to keep the baby’s legs in a straight position. Allegedly, without this, the bones will not be straight and the child will grow up with a clubfoot.
But pediatricians insist: swaddling not only does not straighten the legs, but also threatens with violations in the development of the hips. Wrapping children in cloth is only to calm them down. Most of all, such measures are necessary for restless babies, children with neurological disorders or severe colic. However, if the baby sleeps well and does not feel restless without a diaper, it is not necessary to wrap him up.
2. In a house where there is a baby, it should be as warm as possible

Actually not. Overheating is just as dangerous for a baby as hypothermia. Patronage nurses recommend keeping the temperature in the children’s room at 16–20 °C.
Seeing this figure, your baby’s grandmother will probably throw up her hands with the verdict: “They will freeze the child.” But, according to doctors, at this temperature, the child’s sleep improves. In addition, in the coolness, the nasal mucosa does not dry out and it is more comfortable for the baby to breathe.
3. Dip a nipple in something sweet to soothe a baby

Many grandmothers recommend dipping a nipple in something sweet to soothe a crying baby. In some countries, honey is advised, in others – peanut butter and condensed milk. But pediatricians are categorically against such methods.
The listed products are very allergenic, and you can never know in advance how the body of a newborn will react to such additives. In addition, if the child has already started teething, sugar can cause tooth decay. And honey can also cause botulism.
Well, of course, in principle, giving a baby a pacifier has its pros and cons, so in this matter it is advisable not to deviate from the recommendations of pediatricians.
4. A baby’s bed must have a blanket and a pillow
©Depositphotos, ©Depositphotos
In the past, most mothers approached organizing a bed for a child in the same way as if they were creating a small copy of their bed. The wooden crib always had a miniature pillow and a tiny blanket.
However, pediatricians remind again and again: there should be nothing in the baby’s crib except a mattress and sheets – no pillows, no blankets, no toys, as all this increases the possibility of accidental asphyxia. If the room is too cold, it is better to dress the baby in warm pajamas, but do not cover him with a blanket.
5. The baby should sleep on his stomach
©Depositphotos, ©Depositphotos
At first glance, the advice seems quite logical: put the baby on his stomach so that he does not choke when he burps. But doctors have established that sleeping on the stomach is even more dangerous for babies than on the back, because:
- this position can cause airway obstruction;
- sleeping on the stomach causes dangerous pressure on the stomach and diaphragm;
- this posture can lead to overheating.
Therefore, it is better to put the child on his back. But the head can be turned to the side.
6. The child should fall asleep in absolute silence

It can be quite difficult for an adult to fall asleep if some noise interferes: water drips from a tap or someone is talking in the room. But for newborns, noise sometimes even helps to sleep. There is only one condition: it must be uniform and not increase from the moment the baby falls asleep.
Newborns can sleep quite peacefully if their mother is talking on the phone nearby or if water is making noise behind the wall. Sometimes children even turn on “white noise” on purpose, because, firstly, they fall asleep faster under this monotonous buzz, and secondly, falling asleep at the noise, they will not wake up if you suddenly decide to vacuum in the hallway or wash the dishes in the kitchen.
7. You need to feed your baby according to the schedule

Not only grandmothers, but also some doctors recommend feeding newborns strictly according to the schedule. However, in reality, this approach to feeding exhausts the nerves of both mother and child. In addition, pediatricians do not see anything wrong with feeding the baby not by the clock, but on demand – not a single doctor will advise keeping the child hungry.
However, this does not apply to milk formulas, which are released immediately with the feeding schedule.
8. Complementary foods should be introduced as early as possible

porridge. But doctors would not give such advice.
Breastfed babies should definitely not be introduced to complementary foods at such an early age. According to WHO recommendations, the baby’s menu should be changed no earlier than he reaches the age of 6 months.
9. Animal milk is better than formula

It seems that every family has a story about how a young mother once ran out of breast milk and a young father rushed to the village at a distance lands to buy fresh milk from an old woman who kept her cow or goat. Moreover, this is usually presented as a feat: after all, parents saved their children in this way from feeding on milk formula, which supposedly contains only chemistry.
But doctors see this not as a feat in the name of salvation, but simply another way to endanger the health of the newborn. After all, a balanced milk formula is great for feeding children who are not breastfed.
But animal milk is dangerous for several reasons:
- It contains many minerals that the kidneys of a newborn cannot cope with.
- In this case, there is not enough iron, which can result in iron deficiency anemia. Vitamin C is also lacking.
- Proteins in animal milk can irritate the intestinal mucosa.
- Animal milk may be allergic.
- And besides, due to the unbalanced composition, such milk can accelerate the child’s weight gain.
Therefore, you can give your baby milk no earlier than he reaches the age of 1 year.
Despite the fact that the older generation is mistaken in some way, we should not forget that our grandmothers are a storehouse of useful information, invaluable experience and support. No need to rudely refuse their advice. Instead, try to argue your point, read medical articles together, or invite your grandmother to accompany you to a pediatric appointment.
And remember that they do not wish your child harm, but want to take care of him just like you do.

Newborn Baby Care and the First Week at Home. Top 10 Questions from Moms
Olga Smirnova
Philologist, author Daily Baby, twice mom
#newborn
The first week at home with a newborn baby is a real baptism of fire for a new mother. Constant alertness, a lot of questions and worries: are you sure everything is fine with him? In order to help parents during this difficult period, we, together with pediatrician Polina Aleksandrovna Kizino, have prepared answers to the most common questions about caring for a newborn child.
Changes in skin color in a newborn.
Why and can something be done about it?
No, you don’t need to do anything, because the “wrong color” does not at all indicate mistakes in caring for the skin of a newborn baby.
Pediatrician Polina Kizino explains: “The skin color of a newborn baby can really differ from what we are used to seeing in advertising photos. A newborn has a reddish skin tone simply due to the fact that he was in the womb for a long time and breathed differently from the way we all breathe. During the first days after birth, the baby’s skin acquires a more familiar color.
In addition, almost all babies may experience a transient condition such as physiological jaundice. This is also a completely normal phenomenon, which is associated with a change in the way the child breathes. Due to certain changes that occur in his body, a large amount of bilirubin enters the bloodstream, which gives the skin a yellow color. In most cases, this condition does not require any treatment and resolves on its own. ”
How to conduct a morning toilet for a child? How to wash your eyes, do you need to clean your nose and how to treat the navel?
New mothers often buy newborn care products during pregnancy and rush to apply them as soon as they can. It turns out that most of them are not needed by the child.
Eyes do not need to be washed with any antiseptic solution. It is enough to moisten a cotton swab in boiled water and wipe from the outer edge of the eye to the inner one. For each eye we take our own cotton pad, that’s all care.
Important: Not all wet wipes for newborns can be used to wipe the eyes. In this case, it is worth taking wipes only with a safe composition.
The child’s nose should be cleaned only when necessary: if you see crusts or mucus, you can clean the nose with special adhesive cotton swabs or suck the mucus with an aspirator.
Umbilical wound care is also needed only if necessary, if there are crusts or discharge. In this case, the treatment is carried out using hydrogen peroxide or a non-alcoholic solution of chlorhexidine.
How to organize the process of natural and artificial feeding?
The best food for a baby is breast milk. However, the situations are different, sometimes parents have to make a choice in favor of mixed or artificial nutrition of the newborn.
Pediatrician Polina Kizino tells how to properly organize this or that type of feeding: “If the baby is on the breast, feeding on demand is recommended. In the neonatal period, the more often the baby is applied to the breast, the better. Thus, lactation is stimulated. But, nevertheless, by the end of the first month of life, it is desirable to establish a more or less understandable regimen. This means that we do not wait until three hours if the child is hungry, but we do not feed him every 30 minutes.
This concerns breastfeeding. If we talk about nutrition exclusively with mixtures, then feeding is carried out every three hours or less – this issue is resolved with the pediatrician observing the child.
Note that when choosing a mixture for artificial feeding, you must always consult a doctor, and then observe how the baby reacts to food.
However, changing formula is stressful for a newborn’s digestion, so it’s best to choose a reliable option right away that you won’t have to change. It should be a mixture that excludes all possible “and if …”, that is, it is suitable for children prone to allergies, and children with sensitive digestion, and babies with lactase deficiency, it should be easy to digest and taste good.
Kabrita modern goat milk infant formula meets these criteria.
Even the pickiest of kids will love this formula. The secret is in the creamy taste, adapted protein composition and a unique complex of fats, prebiotics and probiotics. Kabrita mixtures are as close as possible to breast milk in composition, therefore they normalize the digestion of the child and contribute to the correct and harmonious development of the baby.
Are spitting up dangerous?
The pediatrician reassures: “In most cases, regurgitation is due to the physiology of the child, the structure of his gastrointestinal tract. Due to the different angle between the esophagus and the stomach of a newborn (unlike adults), it is physically easier for the contents of the stomach to enter the esophagus and pour into the oral cavity. But watch the child: there are diseases accompanied by profuse regurgitation of the “fountain”, and this is no longer the norm.
In fact, the mother will be able to intuitively understand whether the child’s regurgitation is normal or already “alarming”. If this is causing her serious concern, it’s time to consult a doctor.
What should I do if my baby hiccups?
“Hiccups are also a feature of the newborn, but do not bring discomfort to the baby himself. In most cases, a couple of swallowing movements are enough for a child to calm the hiccups, ”explains the pediatrician.
How do I change a diaper and wash my baby?
“Change the diaper as needed and not necessarily before every feeding, especially at night. If the baby’s skin is healthy, without redness, then no special care products for newborn children need to be used.
We wash the girl from front to back, boys – in any direction. Please note that when caring for a boy, we do not remove the glans penis, since physiological phimosis – narrowing of the foreskin – is typical up to 3-4 years.
Caring for a baby outside the home, on a walk or in the clinic, often eliminates the possibility of rinsing, so don’t forget wet wipes for newborns. When choosing wipes, pay attention to their composition: there should not be anything “suspicious” so that irritation does not occur on the baby’s skin and allergies do not start.
From this point of view, WaterWapes, which are soaked in purified water combined with a small amount of grapefruit seed extract, are suitable for the delicate skin of a newborn. The softness and safety of these wipes was appreciated not only by moms, but also by the American Eczema Association, which honored WaterWapes with its quality seal.
Should I give my newborn a pacifier?
Every young mother has friends or relatives who are sure that a pacifier is a mother’s best helper. But there are those who say: “Don’t even think of offering a pacifier, then you won’t wean it!” Which camp should you join?
Here everyone decides for himself. In the first couple of weeks after birth, lactation is established, and the more the newborn is at the breast, the better. The pacifier during this period should not be in demand. Then it all depends on the child, his needs. If the choice is between thumb sucking and pacifier sucking, then a pacifier is definitely better.
What should I do if my baby has colic?
Polina Alexandrovna explains: “In the first months of a child’s life, his gastrointestinal tract is tuned to work, populated by flora, which means that there may be discomfort and gas formation. Also, babies do not immediately learn to coordinate the muscles of the abdominal press and the pelvic floor, so the process of defecation may not be so easy. But this is a temporary phenomenon. Auxiliary measures in this case are laying out on the stomach, massage of the tummy, gas outlet tube. Not an enema!
Also keep an eye on the child’s regimen – 70% of requests for consultations that relate to the crying of the baby during the day require a banal correction of the regimen. Interestingly, after stabilization of the regimen, “colic” disappears.”
We are talking about the fact that it is still not necessary to feed the child “permanently”, although we leave the concept of “on demand”. You just don’t need to consider every “squeak” of the baby as a requirement.
If the baby is breastfeeding and you see how hard his tummy is after feeding, talk to your pediatrician about it. Perhaps he will suggest changing the diet and advise you to try goat milk infant formula, which is easily digested and the child becomes calmer.
How long to walk with a baby in the first weeks after birth? How to dress and what to take with you?
Our expert pediatrician answers: “Walk as much as you want (exception is frost, when it starts with 5-10 minutes).
Dress normally: one more layer than you. Check the condition of the baby during a walk along the back – it should not be cold or wet. Take a diaper and wet wipes WaterWapes with you; sun protection in the summer for yourself and your child; for yourself – something to eat and drink.
If it’s warm outside and you’re going out for a long time, take a spare light outfit with you, which will come in handy in case of a diaper accident.
How to bathe a newborn and at what water temperature?
Newborn baby skin care is a separate issue. At first, doctors do not recommend using bathing products, but when you still decide to do this, pay attention to the markings on the jars: “From birth” or “0+”, this is a must.
